Title: Made my own springs!
Post by: InTheNet on May 03, 2021, 05:34:02 PM
Working on some Okuma cv20d for a friend /charter captain here in Mi.

Needed 5 clutch springs.  Found 1 for $13.00 plus shipping. After More searching found a place that had them (I thought) for $1.50 so I ordered 10. Finally got a notification they are on back order. (I will never see them)

So after much thought  And head scratching I thought I could make them. Ordered some .025 piano wire. Got a drill bit same outside diameter and started bending after a few attempts I got serviceable if not pretty torsion springs .  I can't wait for someone else to open these up!

They work fine  so he and I are happy.

Sorry to be a naysayer, but piano wire will rust.

YEAH, but we are in freshwater. I will worry about it in 5 years. :-)

Kind of a rush job  to get reels done for a charter. Had to make do with what I had available. This coming winter I can redo them and use stainless.

Sunday he did 36 walleye  in 3 hours/clients were very happy!

Very nice work, you kept the fishing going, stainless steel, leed wire has plenty of spring in it, when you get time, cheers Don.

I have used stainless steel wire leader in the past for making springs. Malin brand.
