Title: BRING YOUR CALIFORNIA FISHING LICENSE!!!!!
Post by: alantani on June 01, 2015, 07:36:44 PM
if you have one, bring it.  if you do not, just wait until we get back and we will figure things out.

they are catching blue fin tuna within range of the 3/4 day boat out of san diego.  if we are going to take a crack at them, it will likely be on our last fishing day, which is friday.  to get in to position, we would have to leave by midnight wendesday night.  so yes, it is possible that we could be fishing for blue fin tuna early on the morning of our last fishing day but we would loose an entire day of fishing at cedros.  we have time to figure this out during the week, giving us time to re-reg for heavier stuff.  it would have to be a near sure thing, but it is possible.  stay tuned.......

I am along for the ride, but wouldn't it be better to try for US bluefin before leaving to Mexico, being they are a 1-2 hour ride out, vs. leaving Cedros a day early and hoping a hot bite back home will still be there in 24 hours.

Just my opinion.

i'm good either way.  i think we will look at the bite, how far out, how reliable, and where we need to be afterwards and see.  nothing is set i stone.

You guys have to have fishing license? Do you have to pay for them? We have to register here on the East coast, but there is no charge for it.

And it goes up a little bit each year...I consider it part of the "sunshine tax"...

Mike is it me you are talking to? I have the NJ registration but not NY. My fishing doesn't get me into NY waterways.

All of my Fish and game licenses are free since I'm a DAV but I don't take advantage of all of them.

I was down right at the boarder a couple of days ago and we saw BFT all over the place, jumpers, breezers and massive sonar marks but the fish did not want to play. The boat I was on had 30 riders and we got 13 BFT, we were in contact with the Shogun and a few other boats and we all seemed to fare about the same. I did manage one fish that went 30 lbs plus but there are some 100 lb plus  fish mixed with the schoolie fish. A massive amount of BFT but also a huge amount of red crab in the water. Several seiners were lined up on the Mexican side and us sporties on the US. The seiners were not setting their nets and the only thing that came to mind as why not was that the schools were too big and they would of destroyed their nets trying to deal with the huge volume of each school. These fish have been there around 5 days now and hopefully they will eat all the crab in the are and start to look for fin bait.

I will smile and have a good time whatever we do . . . but I have chased Bluefin on trips like this before and never seen em on the deck in any numbers.  But one Bluefin 40lb puts the same meat in the freezer as a bunch of reds.

this has been billed as an inshore trip from the beginning.  it will take something pretty amazing to change that.

Of course I will pop for a CA license if I must; however, to quote Bartleby the Scrivener: "I would prefer not to."   ::)

Diving and fishing are different ends of the spectrum. My son and his good friend dove for years in our waters as I sat to wait for them to emerge with there stringers, I can't count the times they would come up with fish and anglers were in the same area catching nada. Divers have a definite advantage over hook and line.

When the tina are feeding on crab/crustaceans, small squid, juvinile, mesopelagics , or other massed slower moving smaller prey, they tend to be a bit more sedentary, location focused, and feed more frequently.  They are also a bit lazier, and line shy.  When they transition to higher trophic level, faster moving finfish prey, they are more mobile, and aggresive, but they feed less frequently (i.e. 2 or 3 Xs daily instead of 5-8Xs.  It is a little more key here to be in the right spot at the right time, but if you are the action can be hot n heavy.

*Based on published research, talks with biologists, and personal experience.

Personally I like it when they are focused on big schools of larger squid the best.  Agressive, location-oriented, and feeding more frequently.

These are the deeper dwellimg spp.  (Such as Hatchetfish and Lanterfish) that spend most of their time around the sound scatrering layer (often 100-300 fa deep), then migrate up at night (how far is somewhat moon-phase-dependent.  There are other nonfish spp.(like paper nautalis, small biolumincent squid, etc)  here as well.  Bigeye Tuna are meso-oriented specialist.

Thats a good plan for sure and when you get on the boat and talk to Mike or Brian, who ever is the captain or maybe they both will be on the boat, they will have the low down on what the best options are. Two different years on my charter, a 3 day trip, we ran to the Lupe because thats where the fish were. We got to the island around 10am looked around until 11 and left at sunset. Not the most fishing time but at that time it was the only option.

BFT are always a roll of the dice fishing wise but one thing I can tell you is Mike sure knows how to put you on biting fish.

Thank you for that explanation Tightlines666, I'm afraid that is over my head for the most part. When it comes to bait and the fish that I'm targeting is usually the more common species that I'm familiar with. Like spots,Kellie,bunker.... Also Ive never fished for the larger game fish so that leaves me out of the picture.
