Have a friend that bought these 2 fish traps and the associated mallet for driving in the stakes that hold them in place. He knows nothing about them and asked if I could identify maybe where they came from. My guess was South America. I reasoned that if they came from Asia they would possibly be made of a reed material. I'm no expert and only made a guess. Anyone have any information?
Can't tell from the photo, but if it's bamboo it's Asian. Bamboo is an amazing material. While living and traveling in SE Asia I saw a number of ingenious contraptions made from it. I have one fish trap/creel I collected in rural China.
methinks stuff like that is woven when plant material is still [half]green
identify which plant & you'll have a good guess for geographical origin
I also thought that if the kind of wood the trap door and mallet are made of might help with identification. I don't know if it's bamboo or strips of wood. Information is limited.
Does look like wood strips. Tough to tell though.
