It may have split due to swelling of the headplate, not uncommon it the older Penns.  It is addressed in detail in other threads here.  I used Harbor Freight small files, only a few bucks to knock the material off the plate a little at a time.  Trust me the ring won't stretch to fit if swelling is your problem.  I still troll the 49's in Mass and Fla.  The drag disengagement lever gets tied down with light twine to a cross post on the reels I fish so a guest doesn't accidentally put the 49 in "knuckle buster" mode.

Thank you City hunker. I'll definitely take a look at that when I get replacement ring. Yea that free drag lever is more useless than useful. 🤷🏼‍♂️
