I have been on a spinner buying frenzy lately. Mainly the Z series, but I can't resist a 450ss.
I've purchased two in the last two weeks.
This one was another two reel deal with a 4200ss. Not that I wanted it, but it came with it.
Anytime you can get a 450 or 550 for less than a Benjamin in good shape, I jump to it.
This one looked really nice, but looks can be deceiving.
Someone attempted to service this reel, but instead of disassembly and cleaning, they just poured oil on top of it.
I have other reels I need to work on, But I tore this one completely down.
There is no other way, except the right one. ;)
All fasteners and screws were loose. It felt very rough on cranking, I thought immediately Gears and Bearings.
The rotor nut was loose and the dog was missing part of the metal.
I have any other dogs in stock but not this one. ::)
If it would have been any other one. I have it.
Cleaned all the bearings and removed one shield, Made a feeble attempt to make a sprung dog. It didn't work.
I'll get the proper dog to make it complete. I put it back together as is for now.
Bearings lubed with reel x and gears with Penn Blue.
Very smooth and a piece of Penn History.
My work schedule only allows me one day a week to work on reels. I look forward to it. ;)
Thanks for the handle Fred.
On the way in the mail Monday morning, Daron --
You should receive it Wednesday --
Best,
Fred
Fred,
You are spoiling me. ;)
I insist on paying you.
Penn 450s are like a Daimond in the rough.
That is an impressive set of organized gears and parts.
I had to refer to some of Sal's expert tutelage to complete this one.
Word of Caution, Don't attempt the bail trip internals after a six pack. ;)
I found a 450ss this week for 40 bucks. It was in 10 condition.
It just had some bail issues. Listed as a penn ultra light.
When I got it. I took the bail and all the springs off, because there seemed to be a anti reverse issue.
The tab that keeps the dog in place has been broken off as you cans see in the pic. (it is next to the bail wire)
Never seen this before. I will buy a new housing to take care of that.
I was going to drill it and put a pin or wire in it, but $20 for a new housing will be the better option.
I'm still only $60 deep and this reel is as nice as they come.

Yeah. Looks real "Fred-esk" there Daron.

Nice 450 Daron - it deserves a new part to keep it stock.
Mike
Nice Daron ;). Those are sweet little reels, hated by must younger dummies, that enjoy the new crap of today...I mean reels. ;D
Sal
I managed to get the parts in a few days without bothering Fred. ;)
Brand new body from Betty and Nick's tackle for $20 bucks shipped.
A bail screw and two springs for $9. I will be making her purr this weekend. ;D
Picked up that 8500 too last week. I can't pass up a bargain on such a nice reel. ::)
I'm familiar with the 550SS and 650SS... Questions:
1) What makes the 450SS better than the 4500SS or 450SSG?
2) What type of fishing do you do with a 450S, and what rod and line do you match it with?
Thanks
4500 ss has a graphite frame and rotor. Most parts will interchange.
4500 ssg, also graphite and Chinese made. Has a anti reverse bearing instead of dogs and some other design changes.
450 ss is an all metal reel with anti reverse dogs and made in the USA. Short production run from Mid 80's and then Discontinued in 1992.
450ss is the second generation spinfisher, first is the greenies and z series.
4500ss is the third.
SSG models were the fourth.
Not really an ultra light. Can hold 300 yards of 10lb test.
Took all the parts off of the old case and onto the new.
I have did quite a few of these, but there is still an issue with this dog.
It has been beaten enough to break the tab on the old one, that it grabs intermittently.
I'll get it right, but I am happy for now. Pretty much brand new 450ss.
After pulling the rotor three times, I replaced the dog and it is fine now.
The dog would engage fine with the rotor off, but after reassembly, it wouldn't work. >:(
The only thing wrong was the tip was a little worn from not engaging properly and breaking the tab on the case.
Can't let that happen again.
Now all I have left is replace the Teflon washers with carbon fiber.
If it is OK with you, Daron --
I can drop a new one in the mail.
Those tabs are finicky to repair on these 4-450 dogs -- and the worst thing is to not have confidence in the ability of the dog to stop the reverse rotation every time when fishing.
Let me know, and it will be done.
Best,
Fred
I found two new ones I didn't know I had last night.
It has a new one in there and I have a spare. ;)
That is a picture of the old and new one above.
I already purchased another one from Betty and Nick's before I found these. ::)
