Title: Poors man DIY Hand rod wrapper jig (from a wood box)
Post by: steelfish on August 17, 2016, 07:30:10 PM
Well time pass and Im still without fixing my own rods and I have all the parts I need, I even have a Pro rod dryer (thanks again Joe) .. but I didnt had a Rod wrapper jig, but no for anylonger..

few years back my goal was to fix my own reels, its DONE and now Im even fixing reels for my friends and for friends of my friends, activity that have helped me to get external funds to get better reels.

now my goal is to fix my own rods, but normal work, family and fixing reels side job havent gave me enought time to make my "nice" hand wrapper jig that Im planning to do, and now I have 3 rods waiting to change one or two guides.

so, recently while working on something around the house, I got a MacGyver moment and visualized my carry-on wood tool box I made few years back as a prospect for my hand rod wrapper station.
well after a short visit to my local hardware store, and after few hours working on it late night I came out with this..

my carry-on hand rod wrapper jig

this next pictures were taken actually testing the rod wrapper on a rod, I didt finished to rod this time to show you how it was, but so far soo good, it felt really good while winding some thread on the rod (which its one of the pending to fix rods)

as you can see, Im using two broken rod tips section as line guides, I have the option of use one or two line guides if I need a different  thread color
(https://alantani.com/gallery/18/3592_11_07_17_1_35_36_182702403.jpeg)

line guides (rod tips) are not permanent there, I made two holes on the slinding piece of wood of 4" deep on which you stick the rod tips, this way they cant get out on their own while using them, but for storing purposes you just take them out from the holes and put them on the floor of the box
(https://alantani.com/gallery/18/3592_11_07_17_1_33_23_182591886.jpeg)

it also has a long screw (worm screw??) from side to side of the box on which I put a piece of wood that can slide to move the winding thread rolls and line guides to your preferable zone.
winding thread tensioners dont need much explanation, right?

and finally a velcro strip on one side of the box to hold the rod and keep it steady.

it came out really a lot better than I though it would, for know I will use it to finish the pending to fix rods and decide to keep it for next jobs or made the one I was planning since the beginning.

now I will just put tons of small fishing decals on it, a dark color felp floor (I already have some) and call it a day... ooh and start using it

thanks guys for your kind comments, best thing about it (IMO) its that once you finished your work with it, you can put all the accesories inside the box along with small Plano boxes with thread, guides, tiptops, etc, then put the wood box on a corner and put another storage box on the top, its really a space saving thingy for small places like mine where I dont have a Man cave.

thanks guys, really apreciate your comments.

nece$$ity is the mother of the invention, right?

seems that I will keep this to-go hand rod wrapper for long, this weekend I did my 1st ever guide winding with it and worked like a charm, I used a really cheap rod I got on a local flea market, it was already fishable as it but two guides were really beat up so I changed them.

well this is how one of the new guides was wrapped.

NO gold or silver trims on them cuz the rest of the stock guides were this simple, just black winding thread and thats it.

still need the coating them

Sid, that design centanly looks similar too mine, cool coincidence, that CRB wraper, is a factory made hand rod wrapper that seems like it was based on DIY rod wrapper designs from people that dont want, need or affort a power wrapper/drier jig.

its cool for guys that dont like DIY thingies, I am one of those guys that normally enjoy more making or building diff things that actually using them LOL, I really hope this will never apply to fishing rods.

@theswimmer , thanks again amigo.

and this is how I repaired and installed two new rings to an old spinning rod with sentimental value for a friend, I didnt wanted to mess a lot with the stock trim bands so, I continue the wrapping with the best similar color I found... I think it ended up good.

I used flex high for years and moved to ProKote last year; PK seems to sag really badly in my environment (hot and humid in NC). Recent builds with 2-3 coats FC Lite build are giving me a nice finish.

thank amigo, yes Im also surprised it ended up really good for being my 1st ever rod repair job.
I actually made another fix for one of my friend's rod, its a light Terez rod, I resintalled the 1st guide (from the tip) and he's really stocked, pretty sure that for this kinds of small fixes this home-made rod wrapper jig is more than enough

Well, this rod is the reason why this "rod repair bug" started, my trevala rod XXH lost the tiptop and 1st guide ceramic on a good fight (agains a sea dog  ;D)
and since I dont have any local or near rod repair shop to send it, last time it took 6-8  weeks to have it sent and back from another city and kind on the expensive side, so, I better learned how to fix them even if the dont look factory repaired.

this is the ending product, tip top new (job is not new to me) and 1st guide (from the tip) installed, including the gold trim and underwrap, I like the baloon look so thats how I did it which is not that different than factory look, I even made a small balloon just before the tip, that part looks bigger in pictures than what it really is, so no problem with the line rubbing on it.

next job will be a changing all guides on my musky rod for some guides 3x stronger and made for saltwater use, but this might take few more weeks and will be on another thread.

next build will look 2x better fo'sho.

well, continue with the rule of necessity is the mother of invention, I added a small upgrade to the rod building box-wrapper

the velcro tape spongy surface really help to reduce friction while manually turning the black to wrap the guides but for a rod with more than 6 guides you really pay the bill on you left hand , or when repairing a rod and the foam of the handle is trying to rotate on the velcro tape, velcro hair and foam are to a nice combination for a smooth rotation, so, I bought some mini roller wheels (cheap ones of course from china) to rotate the blanks or handles on wheels and not on velcro tape anymore.
I already wrapped a guide to test it and it was a home run, felt like Mcgyver LOL, it worked that good that I took the support/base of a CRB dryer that have a kind of slippery soft plastic on the "V" opening to reduce friction while drying the epoxic, whell I took that material out and add some roller wheels too  ;D ;D, another hit  ;)
now my left hand will not get tired when working non-stop when wrapping a whole rod, next move (I dont know when) will be getting a power wrapper ..now the pics so you can understand what I tried to say

in picture seems like the opening between the wheels is too big, but they can have a thin FW rod tip between them
(https://alantani.com/gallery/18/3592_11_07_17_1_35_42_18271361.jpeg)

this is the counter part of the CRB dryer (which it was a Gift by Joe "reel224", thanks again amigo Jose) but this time with roller wheels

this is how it was stock form
(http://www.mudhole.com/assets/images/products/RDS-Rod-Dryer_media-1.jpg?resizeid=7&resizeh=500&resizew=670)

since I dont have a big table to work on my rods and another to dry the finished ones I put the dryer section with the motor on a small table and the counter part of the dryer is attached to a camera tripod, this way I can swivel the dryer to any desire side or elevate the same dryer at any height needed.

and yep, it works really good on the tripod and I can use the dryer anywhere I just adjust the height and forget about it, this "thingy" also serves me as extention to support the handle section of the rod when working on long rods and Im wrapping the guides near to the tip, my working table is just 4' long   :-[ ;D

thanks Frank,

hard to believe I have 2 years wrapping rods for my use and for friends and few "customers" and that box is still going strong and useful for my current needs, of course I would like to be using a nice ALP, PacBay, etc power wrapper but so far so good with mine, still havent felt the "urge" to get spend $350 dls for a nice wrapper.

Alex: You will find out if you didn't already that you accumulate friends as well as cats when you make custom rods :D But that's okay if they appreciate it.

I have an auto rapper and it is great for turning out fast rod work, but when it comes to rod art there is nothing like hand wrapping. I use both.

By the way I make sure I have plenty of boxes for our cat to sleep in, so she doesn't get into trouble in my shop..................Joe

I really need to make me another box wrapper wood box, but this time for this fellow (below) cuz my box is not always mine, the clear tackle box you see aside, its where I put my miscellaneous small tools for rod wrapping, that clear box fits like a glove inside the wood box.

by the way, I upgraded the roller wheels on my rod drier stand and they work 3x better than the tiny ones I installed it at the beginning, I will install some on the V cuts on the wrapper box later.

Jose,

I found them on fleabay, after hours of search and few different O-rings sizes try outs I found the best for those roller grooved wheels (they are sold with no O-ring)

you can find them as:
-  8x30x10 mm Nylon Plastic Embedded 608 U Groove Ball Bearing Guide Pulley
-  O-rings Automobile 35mm x 5.7mm O Rings Hole Sealing Gasket Washer

your welcome Gary and Joe, those replacement "stock" roller bearing wheels for the well-known power wrapper brands are ridiculous priced, I've been searching for better bearing roller wheels for cheap for months, until finding those, I just did the at treatment to them (clean them first, then add a drop or two of tsi 321) and they spin like crazy and super smooth, the rubber O-ring have much better grip to the blank when manually turning it than the old hard plastic rolling wheels I had before.

glad you find them useful to your DIY projects guys.

so, I was about to get back to work on a rod but my cat had another idea for me, he tought it was too cold for work and he wanted to take a nap.

Im against to any kind of animal abuse so, I let him take a nap and I went to the TV room to watch a movie.
a rod can wait but nap time is sacred.

I`ll throw it out there for a cheap home made wrapper .   Stores in closet when not in use.
Plywood wheels , o rings and brass tube for bushings for the stands .
Garage door opener rail for the beam ,  3 foot to 10 foot ,just add sections .
Motor head `s  can be parts from a bread maker , a drill motor or anything else you find .
Micro waves for the dryer motors.
And yet i still do 99% of my wrapping in my lap..

Doing a little rapping a day or two back, and I find that the tensioner is lifting the rod out of the V, So I am starting to think, if the tensioner was pointing down, then it would help to force the rod into the V, know matter what your using to tension it with, just a thought to think about, cheers Don.
