Title: Penn 85 chrome
Post by: kiwiretzev on March 17, 2020, 08:33:23 AM
Hi all,

Tonight I dipped an old flea market Penn 85 reel into a white vinegar bath for 25 minutes -  thinking that 25 mins would be ok, and wouldn't affect the chrome..
However after I scrubbed off the green verdigris off, and dis/reassembled it,  it appears to have ripped huge amounts of chrome off.

I'm thinking Penn perhaps sold the 85 as a budget reel, skimping on the chrome plating?
If this is true, what Penn reels are known for their generous coatings of chrome?

thanks
Paul

Nope, that's normal for anything with that amount of electrolysis- Penn, fishing reel or any metal.  IMO

Paul,
As John said, that is not just from the vinegar.  The corrosion got under the chrome and the vinegar just cleared it all out.

If you need a replacement spool, shoot me a PM and I'll send you one.

Thanks for that guys - that's good information to know.
Short of rechroming, is there anything I could apply to keep the rust at bay?

If not, I happen to have another Penn 85 donor reel, so Ill just swap over the spools (thanks anyway Chad)

Now that you've cleaned all the corrosion off, you can apply a thin coat of grease to protect it.
