One of the young guys I work with at the shop brought me his reel he had it on a rod and he wanted me to wind on the reel with some pulling the line out! The handle would slip as you would wind in the line under pressure. Not all the time but it would happen enough to cause fear! It would only happen in high gear and not low so.. inspecting the high speed gear I found that the edges of the slots of the gear were eared or ramped. The shift key was perfect so replacing the high gear fixed the problem. How does this get like this maybe shifting gears while winding?
How did the pinion look ? Something obviously wasn't meshing up properly. Don't think shifting while winding would do this. Which would be a hard thing to achieve any way. I've seen 2 speeds out of speck not fully engage or hesitate when shifting. The pinion & gear both wear damaged... Jeff
The shifting system and the parts that hold the gears in place is the downfall for these reels. Ive replaced parts on at least 7 of these reels that lost low gear.
The first picture is from a 50W. Its a correct. The second picture show the broken part that is missing. A Penn 12 VSX. The pictures are flopped...

Sometimes it's the worn shifting springs is the problem. Not strong enough will tend for the shifting key to slip. Slip enough times the slots wear out.
similar situation. had to shim the "sprocket" so that engaged 100%. also replaced the two thin retaining ring with one thick one.
I'm having this issue on a 16 visx that's only been on two trips and three tuna at the island.
Glad to find this thread. Pondering taking on the repair my self or sending it out.
My reel seems to skip on the fifth rotation of the handle under load.
Reel was dropped at Ken's custom in Oside. They had to send it to Penn. it's been gone for a month now and await the word on just how bad it is / was.
Ck
Just got my visx 16 back from Ken's.
They sent it back to penn and a full gear set and shifter shaft was installed.
Reel works perfect now.
Thanks to Ken's in Oceanside, Penn reels, and Alan here for the list of parts to change out should I have decided to do the job.
Excellent service all the way around
seems that is a common problem of new Penn international models to Skip every few turns while having some pressure on the line
saw the same problem here

and a guys left me a Penn 20 VISX acting exactly the same, I've opened that reel before and didnt saw anything wrong (as many guys commented on different threads) now I need to open the reel again because we could reproduce the problem between two persons, hopefully is not an expensive fix.
This is a known issue with these reels. They have to go back to penn. :-\
Put in free spoil,,,losen the drag all the way then put back in gear turn the handle tighten the drag a little as you do it,,, ;) this happen to me when I first got my vsx and then never had that problem again,,,,, ;D

if its a known problem, do you know if there any kind of Recall or warranty for this problem?
Not that I know of.
There definitely, should be, come on Penn get it right, its costly to send it back, so do the job properly, bad engineering, cheers Don.

This is covered under the warranty, but has to go back to Penn in Philadelphia, no DIY available.
penn has been great about taking care of this. it's certainly not every reel, but it does happen.
