I don't think the other thread is going to help copy a wooden jig.  This IS wood right?

Yes! They are awesome for Mackerel, but very hard to find these days. Btw, they're lead not wood.

They were the go to lure for mackerel when I was a kid fishing the piers. Now I use a Gotcha lure.it is a similar design that's made out of plastic. It's very effective on mackerel

That Silicone mold idea looks interesting . . . I wish it was more durable, to allow long-term usage, to keep from having to make a new mold every few lures when using lead.

Does anyone know how to go about getting a "Blank" Do-It Mold cut to order ???

Also, any info on how to "design" a metal mold ( Pour hole loaction, etc ) ?

Tight Lines !

If you can find two blocks of aluminum you can make your own mold. Carve the aluminum out with a grinder and dremel.  In that shape jig the pour hole would probably be at the head.

Hmm . . . Interesting . . . Would the heat be too high with the Melting Point of Lead at 621.5 Degrees F  ???

I knew a jeweler, he showed me how they first carve a design from wax, then pour plaster over it to make a plaster mold. They then heat the mold, the wax melts away, leaving the hollow plaster mold. They then use this mold for molten gold/silver which are much hotter than lead.

They also make rubber molds from wax carvings. I think that's to make duplicate wax models used for making more plaster molds.

Gotcha are great too, but expensive, and you have to deal with all those hooks!

And to add another option...I make my lead jig molds out of Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty powder. Made mostly out of talc, powdered quartz and iron oxide - very heat resistant and is super easy to use.

Add water and stir it up.

Then, You simply carve a plug out of balsa wood or other soft wood if you don't have an original to use and press it into the putty when it's setting up. Flip it over and do the other side in a second mold and you're in business! Not as durable as aluminum not as brittle as plaster of paris. I have cast enough to share and use fishing in Alaska with no qualms about losing jigs since they're only costing me pennies to the pound of lead.

see this thread.

Good luck!

I use Gotcha's a lot, but I found those two old Sidewinders in one of my tackle boxes, a while back, and thought I'd like to make a few.

BTW - Some interesting articles on Gotcha's . . .

Way back as a youngster I just used plaster of paris to make a mold.  Used vaseline on the cast.  Worked great and heat resistant.  Didn't cost much.
