Thanks Alan!

Sarah

hi, sarah!  i am planning a charter on the spirit of adventure and i would like you to do the processing for us.  this will be my first attempt at actually being the charter master.  we depart on monday, june 16th, 2014.  more importantly for you, we return on saturday, june 21st.  i hope to be back at the dock at 5am.  i would like you and your crew to pull the fish straight off the boat and go straight to your processing plant to get a jump on everybody else. i want to bypass the sidewalk completely.  there may be a few guys that will want their fish whole.  they can grab theirs separately.  for the rest of us, just take the fish back to your shop, cut them up into one pound packs, toss a bunch of ice on top, and get us on the road as soon as you can!

i am going to run this trip differently, and i am not sure if this will be easier or harder for you.  i am planning on not having individual fish tagged.  we are going to fish as a team.  at the end of the trip, the fish are to be divided equally.  that will require that you separate fish according to species, weigh the entire lot and figure out a cost "per pound of filet,"  then charge accordingly.  if someone does not want to take home that much, they can pay for what ever they want.  if there is extra at the end, i will cover the cost because i will stay until everyone is done.  if there is not enough left, i guess i will be going home with less.  hopefully i will be going home with the same amount as everyone else.

we will figure out on our own who needs to hit the road first and who can wait.  the important thing to me is that we not get stuck behind two other boats.  that is what happened to my friends on the last charter.  the charter master had everyone going to fisherman's processing and two boats got in ahead of us.  our guys did not hit the road until 2pm and they were not very happy with that.

ok, so that's it for now.  here is a link to the discussion on the trip,  please take a look and feel free to chime in on the discussion if you have any questions or concerns.  thanks!  alan

THAT IS GREAT!!
If this is your first time as Charter Master, I'd say you've thought about it a lot. It is always clear when a guide's operation has had a lot of thought put into it and the "niceties" and little things are covered. Every time their is a post about this trip I get more excited. Forget Christmas, I'm going fishing with Alan Tani !!

the actual amount of fish doesn't matter that much for me.  on these trips, i rarely bring that much home.  most of it goes to my parents in fresno.  they're in their 80's.  now that my inlaws are gone, there is not that much demand in my family locally.

I'll probably hang out until the last guy leaves. All I do when I am in area is annoy the guys on the docks. I'm also not sure if I can fly a cooler space-A, so you'll have plenty of fish, Alan. You may end up with all of mine.

5 Star will freeze your fish, pack it in insulated containers and ship. If you live near an airport that SW Airlines flies into, their freight charge for tuna isn't too bad. I've had them send me fish to Florida and the product was fully frozen upon arrival and lasts up to a year in a chest freezer at home.

yeah, thought about that.  if you are flying out, your fish wil have to be vacuum-packed last, then frozen overnight, then shipped out air freight the next day.

QuoteAlan,

Give me the holiday to think about it.  My employees and I need to come up with a game plan. Here are some things we will definately need form you:
The boat NEEDS to arrive by 5:00am.  (First boat to hit the docks gets first processing).
We need to know how many lbs or fish each person wants.
We need to know how many people will be needing processing.

June is very busy and unpredictable.  We want to make sure we can have you leave happy and not screw it up... but we also need you to understand processing an entire boats fish takes time.  FP being done by 2:00pm was reasonable.  Especially if there were other boats ahead of you.

Another option to think about- we can hold anyones fish up to 30 days in our freezer after it is vacuum packed.  We can also box and ship anyones fish.  Just some ideas.

If you have any other ideas or questions please email or call me.

Fishy wishes,

Sarah & the 5 Star gang

bryan, just explain to your wife that you will be bring home 150 pounds of filet and it will cost you $10 per pound.  that way you can come on the trip.

I fish because I like to fish, not to bring fish home.  I get my share 'cuz I know to set the hook when it's in the fishes mouth. :D You can have most of my share.

ok, i just confirmed with sarah of 5 star and annamarie on the spirit of adventure.  sarah's crew will meet us at the dock at 5am.  she and the spirit of adventure crew will off load our fish as soon as we arrive.  then the soa crew will have to give the deck and the carts a quick rinse and we can unload all of our gear.  once into our vehicles, let's have breakfast at denny's and then we can head out to 5 star to pick up our catch.  lee and rob need to be first on the road because they have the farthest to go.  then the bay area guys, then the fresno guys, and then the southern california guys.  for anyone that is catching a flight or needs to be on the road at a particular time, just holler and jump ahead of the line.  it's all good.  eddie and i plan on being the last out and will make sure that sarah get's paid out for anything left over.

also, 5 star is giving us 10% off for going in as a group.  she is also coming in with an extra large crew to make sure our catch is taken care of quickly that morning.  last year, the guys got stuck behind two other boats with another processor and some of the bay area guys didn't get on the road until 3pm.  i'm hoping everyone will be on the road by 10am at the very latest.

we can figure out among us who needs to leave and when.  the important thing is that we not get stuck behind 1 or 2 other boats.  as long as we get to the dock on time, no one should have a problem getting out at a decent time.  like i said, i am hoping they will be done with the last fish by 10am.

I'm in no hurry, if someone has to catch a flight they have priority.  I drive until tired, take a break then drive more.  Usually I can make it to between Chico and Anderson before the first break, then Grass Lake.

My wife is picking me up for the ride to Travis. We will buy a cooler to hold whatever our share of the catch is. She won't wake up early enough to get to the dock much before 10.

OK, now we are real close and I think it's great on the processing discount. Since I've never done this kind of trip, what would be a reasonable amount to budget for processing? Is everyone paying equal? Or if someone doesn't want to take home fish do the rest of us have to pick up the slack? I would hate to see someone foot a big bill at the end but like most of us I'm on a tight budget.

Input please

Alan indicated that he will pick up the slack...and will probably deliver the excess fish to his parent's home.

I will also cover a portion as I want fish  ;D since I am unable to go this year.  :(

good to know because i'll be happy with 200lbs or less of whole fish since I don't have the freezer for it and the budget too.

That will work...My Mom keeps trying to give me money for the trip, so maybe i will take it and if there is enough left over fishes and if I have the finances I will pay a bit extra and fill her freezer for her  ;D ;D ;D

We should be able to figure a per pound price and it's not fair to charge those that do not want fish or take less than a full crew share.

i may ask sarah to give us a "filet" price so that guys can just grab what they want and hit the road.

I assume I can just have whole fish and process them myself?  Actually some of my son's friends will do it for me in exchange for some.  I gave them some BFT yesterday including the bellies... They want more and will drive to SD to help me out.

we can get a total count, then divide it through by the number of guys and that's the number of fish you get.  just grab your fish first and you're good to go!

Alan, I don't need or want a lot of fish. I'll be happy with 3-5 of fish before processing. I'm on this trip primarily to meet you guys and the "adventure" part of it.

it's good stuff.  for now, let's just plan on everyone dividing things up evenly.  we can figure out the details later.  and, hey, we've gotta catch 'em first.  the hawaiian guys know this.  you do not want to anger the fish gods before a trip.  they do not go fishing.  they go out for a walk on the beach.  if fish happen, they happen.

once i promised some salmon to my aunt.  i was skunked for the next 10 salmon trips in a row.  this bad juju, it's real!   ;D

Ron: Keep the good vibe going. Keep walking the beach for us all, I for one am on 24 straight days of work & it finally paid off. My company is installing 60 new ice machines in my area and because I went to fix one on a Sunday the Owner of the Dinuba Grocery Outlet gave me 6 bacon wrapped fillet's and 4 pounds of Yellowfin Tuna for my troubles, Now that's got to be some good JuJu  ;D ;D ;D

We call it "holo holo"

and we also bring poles, bait,...

It's more of an event where friends can come, eat and drink together, play Hawaiian music and if we are blessed with the bells going off and the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, then it's on.  Otherwise, we are just there for a good time together.
