crud.  joel, these are all single drag systems with a limited drag range.  also, the tld's might have an aluminum frame, but the single dog is screwed into the soft graphite right side plate.  i would not recommend any of these for our local bluefin.  line capacity might also be an issue.  i would typically recommend a 130 pound line class reel like a makaira 50, a penn 50 visx or a penn 50 international II.  the penns will need a little work, the makaira can be fished out of the box.  you might also consider the wide versions of these reels if you are thinking about fishing 300 yards behind the boat.

for rods, i would recommend a united composites invictus, a seeker osp 3x, or a fishing syndicate 3xh.  at some point, we should talk.   :-\

Blind inserts can save the day in modern reels that have to be opened for service often. The undersize screws in plastic is no good. The manufacturers act like you will never take the darn thing apart; and I guess they are right more often than not.

Quote from: Crow on December 02, 2024, 10:48:30 PMa question about those "double roller" roller guides....what is the "correct" way to run the line through the?  "between" the rollers? , or, over one roller, and under the other one?
Between them.  The striper guide has two rollers in case the height of the reel makes the line rub on the top of the guide.

I should also add that the grinding occurs when turning the handle while in gear, and in free spool.

Thanks, I'll check this next.

Had to reload my Google account but I got to see it, in Italian, and want one.

I went to the Everol website, and the swivel tool is not listed but the twister knot tool is.

MexicanGulf, where did you purchase the tools from and how much where they!?

Penn Tutorials and Questions / Fathom 10XNLD grinding
Last post by fishgrappler - Today at 02:31:59 AM
Hello all, new here but I've been browsing the forums for a few years.

Today I serviced my first gen Fathom 10XNLD. Everything went well, no corrosion, maybe a little too much grease from my last service. Cleaned a little off, oiled the bearings and reassembled. Free spool and drag functioned well, but there was a grinding sound/feel when turning the handle. I didn't pay attention to how it felt before I opened it, but I don't think it was as bad as it was after service.

Disassembled again, inspected, cleaned, regreased - still grinding. Repeated this several times until I noticed some marks on the pinion gear. Just about every tooth had a small mark, perpendicular to the spinning axis. Cleaned and regreased a couple more times, tried cleaning off most of the grease and assembling semi-dry, and tried loading a slightly excessive amount of grease, all of which did not stop the grinding.

Bearings seem fine. If I have just the right side plate, main gear, and pinion gear I do not hear the grinding. Not sure what else to try.

Any tips on some common issues that might cause the grinding? And if the grinding could have caused the marks on the pinion gear, and would you guys consider replacing it?
