Does anyone have any recommendations for fishing charters in Kauai, Hawaii?  What type of fish do you catch in March/April.

Well, I live on the Island. But I've only had one charter experience years ago(bout 2 years before I officially moved here) and it won a "not recommended" vote from me. I set it up, showed when I's supposed to and they bumped me off for 2 guys that must have come along after me, but had more $ for the crew to make. Unethical to the Nth degree, but at least they didn't try and lie about it. The least they coulda done was call me to cancel... "Kauai Deep Sea Fishing Charters", outta Port Allen, South side.

Sorry for the ramble, but that's why I avoid charters since I've lived here and don't pay much attention to that business. Also, there is a "share the catch" thing here: you pay pretty standard pelagic charter prices and the boat keeps most of the catch(sells for a good price to restaurants). This is fine for people are here for only a week or so. Say about 5lbs. of Ahi Tuna in the condo. freezer and maybe they can eat it before they fly back.

Not sure about Mar.-April species way out there, but the kayak fishin closer to shore sure picks up. I would love to give it another shot with the charter thing, though. I will be off-island from 3/6 to 3/23. If interested PM me. Maybe we could get together for a trip. And maybe I can start askin round bout the better charters...

Gfish:  Sorry for not replying back.  The vacation was crazy busy with activities.  I only got to go fishing at the last minute when one person cancelled off a boat near Waimea as we were walking back from the Napali Coast tour.  The boat was called the Big Ta Da.  The Captain and the Deck hand were very good and worked very hard to find the fish.  The Tides were just not with us.  Over six hours we had 7 bites.  We caught 4 Skipjack between 5-8 lbs and 1 skipjack that was anywhere between 30-35 pounds.  Just to brag, I caught the big fish (pic to come later).  Overall the boat, Captain Brad and the deckhand Saxon were first class.

The style of fishing:  we used the bent butt rods and trolled.  There was no handling of the rods, just reeling.  I had visions of holding the rod and pulling up and reeling down.  Not to be.  I should have done more research.  You live and you learn.  Overall it was a fun boat ride with good friendly people.

On another note, we went snorkeling in Poipu beach.  Fish everywhere so near the beach.  I went to Walmart and bought a telescopic fishing pole and reel combo with the hopes of letting my 7 year old son reel in some fish.  I used some cut up Skipjack belly for bait thinking that it would be like shooting fish in a barrell because i saw a million fish while snorkeling over two days.  My son and I went out there in the dark at 5am and fished for a half hour, not one bite.  Can't believe that I did not get one bite.  I saw the deckhand throw a piece of fish jerky at the marina and a swarm of fish went pirahna on the chunk of fish.  I assumed it would be the same at the beach, it wasn't.   It was still fun hanging out with my son watching the sunrise.  I will have to find a place that has crappie/bluegill to get him excited about fishing.
