Title: Here's something you don't see every day Tumwater #900
Post by: CincyDavid on February 01, 2023, 12:06:59 AM
I have seen pretty much ZERO reference to this brand of reel aside from one reference to the presumption that Olympic built their casting reels so it would seem logical that the spinning reels came from the same source. Bought today on FB Marketplace on a Conolon rod, along with several Penns and a total of 16 rods for the princely sum of $40

Pic of the inside.  Cleaner than I might have expected and almost dry.  Beats mountains of dried out old grease I suppose.

The Tumwater 900 was a Japanese reel manufactured in the Mid 60's.

They also made a 860.

This is according to Ben Wright's Third Edition, in 2002.

Thanks Fred, I knew somebody would know.  I felt kinda funny taking all of those items for $40, but the feeling passed quickly.

On a semi-related note I want to clean it up but the foil label is already lifting.  Any thoughts on saving/salvaging that label?

I would just clean around the label —- not remove it (that will cause damage and wrinkles, and be worse) —- then after cleaning use some Tac-Glue, or similar to glue the loose edges —- and a plastic clamp to press the label tight for 30 minutes.

Also...Don't try cleaning the label with anything except a dry microfiber cloth with no cleaners.  Otherwise, the printing on the label will disappear.

Japanese trade reels generally had these foil labels because it was quicker, easier, and cheaper to procure the reels from a known manufacturer —- and just put a label on them that sounded like an American name we recognize.

Forget which Beer company had Tumwater in their advertising?

Olympia, Hamm's?

Best, Fred

Interesting and somewhat unique drivetrain.

That YouTube dude annoys the heck out of me. He never includes anything worthwhile in his videos, just spins the silly things with no conversation. He'd probably get a lot more subscribers and repeat viewers if he talked a little and opened the reels up for a look-see.  :-\

Ive often thought about running a camera while I do my various projects just because there's so much crap video out there (and I might as well make them look good) but one thing that slows me down is how much I hate my own voice and don't wanna narrate anything.

I'm right there with ya, hate the sound of my voice.  I work in a call center and have to listen to agents' calls all day, and they all hate listening to their own calls.

Some tutorials use text and point with their fingers or use "tools".  Seems like more production work, but some are very informative and helpful.  The finished videos are more efficient but the music is usually annoying.

Leave it to the resident Beer Guy.  Tumwater was home to the Olympia Brewery, photos attached of both the Brewery and the adjacent Tumwater Falls that were their water source that I took on my PacNW trip with the family last summer. Beautiful building, unfortunately overrun  with "Urban Campers" and having suffered a few fires because of it - but when I was there I was led to believe the city really wanted to work on preserving the site for its historical importance.  The river itself has salmon ladders skirting the falls, and leads up to a hatchery that is about maybe 1/4 mile above the remains of the old brewery.  If you can find a copy of the logo you can see it the center of it a rendition of the waterfall.  Since the water they used in the brewing process was sourced locally, they also marketed "artesian spring water" and had an ad campaign featuring mythical creatures with the tag line "I know an Artesian, well".  Much like our fishing industry, my industry has seen lots of consolidation and takeover in the decades - Olympia is currently owned by Pabst (which of itself is owned by private equity investors) and as I understand it the brand is on hiatus, but hopefully someday will return.

Super-nice post; lots of good reading.  Oly was my brew of choice away back when; even though it's -6 here tonight (MN), I could go for a cold one right now.  No sign of an Oly in years. :(

That's a great photo of the logo, I had forgotten about the Lucky Horseshoe.  Looking forward to when David corners the market and shares photos of his complete set of Tumwater reels, it's so cool to see so many of these neat old reels that used the marketing of the times (I think) to try and gain traction in the American market. Back then Tumwater was probably recognized, today we have different social references.  - john

John, guess if I visit enough garage sales or estate sales around North Port and Punta Gorda I may find other oddball reels and perhaps more Tumwater reels.  The guy I bought it from was originally from PA but I didn't think to ask where he had gotten it. I'm trying to accumulate "sets" of reels, 2 or 3 green South Bend 700 series for instance, 2 or 3 green Heddon, a couple gold and brown Heddon, etc. in different sizes.

I remember seeing ads for Olympia but don't think I've ever tasted it.  Hamm's had that bear as I recall. We of course had Hudepohl,  Schoenling, Wiedemann and a ton of other breweries in Cincinnati and N Ky, many of which never came back after prohibition.

Back in the '60s, they had a baseball game of the week on every Saturday morning.  Pre-cable TV, of course.  Dizzy Dean, Peewee Reese and I forget all who else.  Had "time out for Falstaff" ads; why I remember that, I don't know, except, as kids we always ran around saying "time out for Falstaff".

I grew up a mile from the Falstaff Brewery in Omaha. Most local people considered it pretty bland & blah in comparison to Bud, Schlitz, Hamm's & Storz. Most thought of it in the same lane as Pabst.

I actually worked in a brewery in Phoenix for part of one summer in the early '70s.  The work was dirty & hard, but the pay was good (Teamsters Union; princely sum then of $4.38/hr) and the fringes (all the beer you wanted, but don't get loaded on the job) were the best.  I believe the parent company was Carling, probably better known in Canada than US.  We brewed A-1 Beer and a few others, including something called "Dutch Treat", which I don't believe I ever had the courage to try.

Pretty sure Falstaff was a Griesedieck Brewery product out of St Louis.  There was even a Griesedieck Residence Hall at St Louis U.  They were a big brewery at one time.  I imagine they had regional breweries in different parts of the country.

This is an amazing thread. I once fished with a couple guys named Dizzy and Peewee under a falls and hooked a Falstaff beer can while using a Tumwater reel. That day was going to be the start of my YT vlog but I couldn't stand the sound of my voice. ;D

Definitely a cool reel. Looks Italian on the outside. The internals remind me of the Roddy 910.

Would you look at that, a Tum Water 860 for sale?  $100 is too much for what amounts to a novelty for me.
