Title: 74' Evinrude 9.9 won't start
Post by: jgp12000 on March 24, 2024, 03:10:10 PM
My 74' Evinrude 9.9 on my 14ft jon boat has been sitting for 18 months, and my Grandson wanted to take it out this past weekend. So I put 6 gallons of fresh non-ethanol gas and added the proper amount of oil 16oz,pumped up the bulb,a squirt of starter fluid,no start.I pulled the plugs, cleaned them, still no start.
My son-in-law said it wasn't getting fire last time he had it at their house (for 2 years) he put 2 new coils on it and it ran great.I haven't checked for a spark yet.I noticed some of the Amazon coils you have to plug the spark plug wire into the coil, any suggestions Gurus?

If you have spark —- it is not the coil.

Move to fuel issues.

Typically, when any gas engine has set for awhile —- there could be some varnished gas residue in the carb or jets.

On a 9.9 Evinrude —- take off the cover, then remove the metal plate from the front of the carb.  Now you can get to the drain (likely dried up, but good to check).

Spray some starting fluid in the butterfly choke.

If your spark plugs are not badly fouled it should start.

Then it can be adjusted for prime operation —- or sometimes just easier to install a new carb with the jets.  Not very expensive online.  Easy to do.

But try the clean-out first.

Best, Fred

Check for spark on both plugs , check kill switch .    There is points and condensers under the flywheel that may need cleaning or replacement .
Lets here what you have so far as spark goes .

Already sort of mentioned, but sometimes when motors set unused, depending on where they've been stored, the points can get glazed over with a film that needs to be filed or sanded off before you will be able to get spark even though the coil/s is working. It happens on my tractor all the time after it's been sitting for a few months.

Those 9.9s are pretty simple to figure out. I've got a 76 9.9 Johnson.

I found a youtube on getting to the points with a bolt type wheel puller,I will check for spark 1st.I assume there is a kit to change to electronic ignition, maybe?

Mouse nest inside somewhere, even down in the carb.  And, yes, check the kill switch; wiring can go bad.

No fire, I ordered a tuneup kit on ebay

What setup do you have on that engine  , two coils external or internal ?

2 External, just like in video, pull start.Tom we used emery cloth to clean relay contacts,a good magnet will energize/exercise stuck reed relays.

Points:
OMC-581207 or S9-445

Tune-up kit :
OMC-172806 or (Sierra) 18-5003

I think?

That was the more reliable system .     Make sure the kill switch isn`t the problem .

Joe, is there an easy way to test the kill switch when the motor won't crank?

Normally open I would assume? Ohmmeter to check shorting spark to ground maybe?

Follow the kill switch wire , I believe there is a bullet butt connector you can pull apart .   That will take the kill switch out of the equation .   I don`t remember if the switch had separate wire with a loop connector that went under a bolt to ground  .     Another thing you can check is the impulse going to the external coils .  I believe there is connect at the coil to pull apart to check.

It looks like both wires on  the kill switch need to be disconnect .   Each leg goes to a coil and the switch body is the ground

I once wanted to, get my outboard serviced, so I emptied the fuel tank, gave it a good clean out, placed a mix of fresh fuel, took it to them to service it, once I brought it back home I place the earmuffs on it, & it would not start, I contacted the mechanic, he said it was running fantastic, his question is did`nt you choke it, I said how stupid do you thin I am, so he hung up on me, My son, is a mechanic, he came over, & we found, that the rubber primer was`nt workin as it should, it turnt out the the outboard mechanic, used there fuel tank & not ours, so that primer could be worth checking out, good luck, cheers Don.

Yep years ago I connected a hose up backwards after 15 mins of pulling/sweating at the ramp ::)  I figured it out, fuel only flows one way...

Yes I can understand that, but ours was not holding the fuel could get the motor to cough n fart, & that was it, brought a new primer & hose clip, & it started first pull, Yee Haa, cheers Don.
