Title: Abu Garcia 4600C3
Post by: Eddie Hernandez on April 09, 2018, 02:54:31 PM
Hello everyone, I was given this reel my buddy informed me there is a issue with the drag, when the drag is tightened the line can still be pulled out fairly easy. I have no experience working on these reels and was looking for some direction? thx

attached some photos below..

These are very simple reels to work with. There should be a tutorial on this site. If not YouTube will have some. I would replace that handle. Its really too big for that size reel.

You can do it yourself very easy.

Smooth Drag has a much better Carbontex drag set and a better metal drag washer set for that reel.

I'm pulling on the line but don't see the braid slipping.

Eddie i showed a customer today that his line was spinning on the spool. It was a spinning reel. I could hold the spool and turn the line that was wound onto the spool.

Make sure the spool isn't turning then pull on the line.

I think Alan has the right answer (no surprise there). To make sure, make a small dot on the spool flange with a Sharpie, tighten the drag and pull on the line. If the line pulls out but the mark doesn't move, you've got the dreaded braid slippage.
It's an easy fix. Wind the braid onto another reel, spool on a few yards of monofilament, attach the braid to the mono with the knot of your choice, and re-spool the braid, keeping tension on it as you spool it.

but it could be the drag too.  Pull it apart and see what you have.  Like Keith says, they are not difficult.

Took the reel apart everything seemed ok,going to order new drag set.

I was not able to install the star drag back on when i tried screwing it back on it would it give resistance instead and would not thread on smoothly, it would cause the entire mechanism to start spinning making it impossible to thread it on, is this the problem? I also noticed the drag washer were greased maybe a little to much could this also be an issue with the drag??/

The top picture is right but i dont see the smaller drag washer that goes on first under the main gear. The new set will have all of them and they will be slightly larger fitting the main gear completely plus one for under the gear.

I found the small washer it was stuck on to the main gear with a nice amount of grease.

Waiting on the new drag set to attempt to reassemble the reel..I will also remove the existing braid from the spool..

Handi-I installed the new drag set and the drag now functions as it should!! Thank you for the recommendation I was very impressed with the drag set!!! quick delivery also..the only thing that is bugging me is the star drag comes into contact with the handle when its loosen to a certain point?, I noticed the handle(not original) has a bit of a curve to it(Bow shape) could that be why??

Is the friction washer (Abu part #5115) in place between the drag star and the handle?
It looks like this:
