Title: Time to Take the “No Anti-Reverse” Tape off this Old Sailor
Post by: foakes on April 16, 2023, 01:18:48 AM
Working on 11 DQ Reels this weekend —- in between going to a Long Beach State Concert for our Nephew last night.

Then heading to a Community Play tomorrow in Fresno.

While waiting for some reels to cure in the oven —- I ran across this old True Temper (Ocean City) 923C Level-Wind reel that was in nearly new condition.  There was a piece of tape on the sideplate that read "No Anti-Rev".   But the reel was in perfect shape otherwise.

So, in between reel parts and frames getting painted —- I decided to crack her open.

Spotless inside.  Found the issue immediately.  The steel dog lug had separated from the bronze dog.  Tapped it back into place —- and it seemed to hold.  But I am never sure of those types of temporary fixes (there was some reason it came off in the first place) —- didn't want it to happen to a fisherman on the water.

So went out to an old stash of Ocean City parts and found the new needed dog.

Did a quick disassemble, full cleaning, reassembly and tune with proper synthetics.

It holds 400 yards of 20 pound mono —- and it is comparable to a Penn 209 LW, in size —- maybe a little lower profile.

True Temper merged or bought out Ocean City in the late 50's.

It also has a sticker on the bottom which I left on that shows it was purchased at a Naval Exchange PX.

If anyone wants this old sailor —- just let me know.

They are not high dollar —- but they are as solid as they get.

Possibly stronger than a comparable Penn —- believe it or not.

The operation and function is smooth and perfect.

Best, Fred

:)   Nice .   That would be the first time that I have hear or seen that pin come out of the dog .

If anyone wants this reel —- just figure a $30 service —- and the reel is yours.

So, basically, it is a free reel.

It is an impressive and useful reel.  The crank knob is not that stupid hollow material that seems to disintegrate —- it is solid all of the way through, and intact.

This reel is nearly new with very smooth function.

My suspicion is that the steel post that came off the bronze A/R dog was just a factory defect —- failed early on —- and was never used afterwards —- I got it from an old shop that probably could not find a part for it —- and just tossed it on a shelf.

Best, Fred

Yeah, nice. I like some of the OC part systems better than those of the Penn's. Like the pinion/e. Jack system. Overall, I think they cut less corners and built tougher reels than Penn.
I noticed in your first picture that there are 5 metal washers(2-eared & 3-keyed). Is that correct? Also what'er the fiber washers made odda and how many are there? I only see 6 total washers on the schamatic.

All metal, Greg —

Drag is smooth and sure.

2 under gear thin metals —- 5 keyed and eared in the main.

What a coincidence, my son wanted a reel to use while flying his kite.  We went to the shop and browsed the reel locker and he wanted to use the 923 I had.  I spooled it with 20# mono and mounted it on a rod butt that was missing everything north.  Bill

All metal? There is no friction material? What is the drag range?
