here is the list of guys that are on the june 2015 trip. the guys that were on the trip last year get first crack at this year. to get your name on this list, you have to send me a check for $850, which is half of the total estimated $1700 cost of the trip. it will be placed in a separate checking account that i will set up. i will need a second check for $850 before april 1st, 2015. this is all fully refundable until April 1st when a check will be sent to the spirit of adventure to pay for the trip. after april 1st, you are committed. to get a refund after april 1st, 2015, we have to find a replacement for you. thanks! alan

Bravo, Big Tim! You're exactly right, of course:
iole +
anthos = Iolanthe = violet flower. Except that I'm not so mysterious at all, just another angler who can't wait to go fishing! :D
I too am stoked to meet you and everyone else, it'll be a wonderful trip. But counting down until until June is gonna be awfully tough... seems like a long, loooonng way off. :-\
Still, the older (ugh) I get, the faster time seems to fly, so before we know it... all aboard! ;D

Welcome, Joey --
Looking forward to meeting you sometime.

welcome, ben! now let's just hope that we can both get the time off!

... and randy are back
I'd like to introduce myself and say how much I'm looking forward to this trip. I haven't done this type of fishing since growing up in SoCal and some in San Diego-courtesy of the Navy. Learned to fish on the Huntington Beach Pier and Redondo Barge. I do think I should try to be part of the Vintage Challenge. I'm vintage, none of my reels are made anymore, and I'm a lot more comfortable with mono than braid!
Looking forward to meeting all of you and trading fish stories !
Bill
Hello, Bill!
I too am definitely vintage, prefer classic reels, and have never even tried braid (but probably will at some point... probably.) I think we'll all get along splendidly and have a terrific time on the trip.
Can't wait... only 3+ more months! :)
~A~
bill is a refugee from the august trip! glad you could make the switch. aiala, got your check so you are all paid up, thanks! we have one more spot to fill, and two more for standby. we actually did run with 26 last year and i think it worked out well, plus everyone got $100 back and some goodies!

So the "standbys" DO get to go on the trip. I've been drooling over that 24th and last spot since the Aug trip was canx. Waiting on my taxes to be finished to see if I have any discretionary $ left over. Did some consulting work last year and did not do a good job of tax planning. Ugh! Should have the sad news by next week.
It's a $700+ plane ticket from GA to SD, so I didn't want to chance the standby route. I assume it's the same routine as we discussed for the August trip, arrive a day early (14th), stay at the Vagabond, dinner and tequila (dinner optional) with the gang, afternoon flight out on the day we get back. Bring ratty or disposable clothing. Designer trash bags in case of rain.
I can either rent tackle or use loaners. Don't think I want to fool with flying fillets cross-country, so you guys and gals can have mine.
Oh, the 15th is my 66th birthday. I'll expect a cake and some dancing girls. Aiala, you might have to volunteer :)
I have no idea what a "typical inshore trip" is, but I assume it involves catching fish.
Any other details can be worked out once Alan gets my check in hand.

There are setups from last year's trip that I was going to leave at home this year...if you do sign up, they can be brought along too, as well as some other setups.
I'm in San Diego County so bringing along a total of 15-20 setups ::) is not an issue. :)
Wally15,
Alan will have his spread of rods and reels...which usually consists of 3-5 of each combination. I think you need not worry about rods, reels, or tackle for that matter.

I heard he has a bad habit of leaving them behind :) And now he's even older. I don't want to end up with a snoopy pole and 4 lb line.
I'm sure there will be plenty of tackle available. In fact, I want to try out as many combos as possible so I can upgrade my GoM equipment back home. I'm even less knowledgeable about rods than I am reels.

wally, whatever you bring with you from georgia, plan on leaving in california, unless you can take it carryon. as far as fish go, just get a ice chest at the local sporting goods store and we can talk to sarah at 5-star about flash freezing your fish for the ride home. except for a maybe reel, don't bring any tackle at all. this will work out well, because unfortunately tim can't make it :'(, which means you get the number 2 slot and you are now eddie's new drinking buddy!

I'm not sure I can "run with the big dogs" anymore, but I'll bring a large bottle of Zantac 150 and see what happens. I just put the check in the mail, just reserved a room at the Vagabond (almost screwed up and made the reservation at Vagabond Bayfront in SF), and reserved a parking slot at the ATL airport for a week. Only thing left is get a plane ticket and twiddle my thumbs for the next 15 weeks. And be VERY nice to the wife.

AAAAWWWW MAN!
Hope he's OK.
Guess I'll have to play the role of "That guy" for the trip...
So is it a definite that you guys will run with 26 people?
i would like to, yes. with 26, we all get $100 back, the deckhands get a better tip, the difference will hardly be noticeable and a guy can still get a complete refund if something disasterous happens last minute.
I'm fine ;D A lot lighter in the wallet due to unfortunate timing of unforeseen bills and a business deal falling through. If I could guarantee that all the finances would be right by June I wouldn't give up my spot. Next year is already in the plans ... Now the important thing is to think about is Eddie's new drinking buddy. I highly recommend you strengthen up your liver by a steady diet of 12oz. lifts ;D ;D ;D

hit the local BEVMO in san diego before you board. i will be there on sunday and i can give you a lift. or if you let me know what you want, i can pick it up ahead of time.

Either option is fine with me. A gallon of Wild Turkey 101 ought to last out the week. I arrive on American Airlines flt 2214 at 2:54 PM. I'm guessing another hour or so to get to the Vagabond? Is there a shuttle bus? It might be better timewise for you to get my booze when it's convenient for you.
Told the wife I was going fishing in CA for 5 days. But I'm not taking any fishing equipment, only some ratty clothes and a gallon of booze. Thank goodness she's not a suspicious person.
Mike
fishing trip and not taking fishing gear. never thought about that......
so a handle or two of wild turkey 101?
The Vagabond can't be more than 10 minutes from the airport... unless the traffic is particularly hellish. I'm planning to stay there on Sunday as well... too far to drive from Palm Springs on Monday morning.
In any case, your missus isn't suspicious because gals know that a guy going off with scuzzy clothes and a jug of hooch screams "FISHING!!" rather than anything sneaky. :D

Come on along. FWIW, if you could make the 26th person, I'll chip in my $100 rebate toward your ticket. Then I wouldn't feel as bad about borrowing people's fishing gear. And I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to "even up" at some point in the future.
Plus, my liver would appreciate it, 'cause then you could be "Eddie's Drinkin' Buddy". Or maybe we could tag team him.
I'm not familiar with the term "two handles" of booze. The only bottle of Wild Turkey with a handle is the gallon.

Mike, Aiala : Thank you for the kind gesture, but we needed 26 full paid passengers to get the $100.00 rebate. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason and if it's meant to be I will be on that boat. I have a few tricks up my sleeve and if it doesn't work out, I will take my son on a 2.5 or 3.5 dayer later in the season. I pulled my name and took the refund to catch up on bills. I didn't think it fair to hold a spot and bail at the last minute if the money didn't get right in time.

welcome to scott rodriguez, aka "sundaytrucka!" we now have a full charter.
there is one problem looming. i thought for sure that i had requested vacation time last year, but apparently i did not, or the email for my request was lost. my co-worker, ben, had also requested time off for family vacation, then decided to come with us. we are trying to both get vacation time that same week, but there may not be enough bodies to go around. ben says he will bow out if the vacation schedule does not work out. i told him that he could go in my place as charter master, but he chuckled and said no. ;D
if we have enough guys, i would like to run with 26 again. that way we can return someone's full fare if they miss a plane flight or there is some other emergency. and it we all 26 make it, we all get money back again! so, guys, send in the other half of the payment, if you haven't already. i will send out emails to everyone as well. thanks! alan
Alan, I will gladly take your fully paid charter master spot ;D Seriously, this needs a couple of stand by's , or run 26... I am working feverishly to secure spot 25 or 26

Who still is selling gear sets?
Hey Bryan,
I bought my 3.3 set from Ken's Custom Reels in Oceanside, I believe he has one more 3.3:1 and some of the higher gear sets avaiIable (all used gear sets, for $40).
I contacted Tiburon, as you suggested, and they still have some; Quick Change gear sets in stock, I believe all except the 2.9:1, selling for 56.99.
I asked Tiburon about the SST upgrade for the 7530, and said it would have to be sent in to Tiburon for the upgrade, they do not sell the kit as an upgrade, I was told the right side plate is swapped out for an SST model side plate, confirmed at Ken's Custom also.

Sorry to hear that Tim, I was looking forward to meeting you, along with everyone else.
I have a query...I know, you would never expect that from me, right?
Being my first LR trip, how does pricing break down if we were to get 23 sign-ups, and not the 24 expected? Will we have to spread the $1,400 amongst the standing 23?
Ideas:
If spreading the cost is necessary, which I do not mind, could we work out a deal with the SOA and split the difference (for less than the $1,400), calling it a tip?
That being said, if we were required to pay the full fare, could we simply donate the spot to somebody (Alan's Choice), given we would all be putting in the extra money for a full fare #24 spot either way? Just an idea, as Aiala and Mike supported first.
-Scott
the deal is $1700 for 24 of us, less if there are 25 or 26, but not more if there are fewer than 24. that's my responsibility. you guys don't have to worry about it.
tim dang is going to join us, so we are back up to 24.
i send a check to annemarie for $33,550 as payment in full. that much is done. i just realized, though, that there is still the $80-90 fee for the mexican fishing license. if we run with 26 instead of 24, then everything will be covered. i'd like to do that if we can get enough sign ups. sorry about the screw up...... :-\
no worries alan, thanks for setting all of this up! i'm super stoked! hotel suggestions?
Should this be paid the day we leave dock, or sent to you before departure?
Did you guys get charged a fuel surcharge last year? A couple of guys said be ready for it.
Fuel price is way down, how can they justify the surcharge?
25 years strait and I never paid a fuel surcharge on the SOA.
From Mikes (SOA) website.
"There will be NO fuel surcharge unless the cost of fuel is more than $4.25 per gallon."
the chance of a fuel surcharge is virtually zero. plus, we will likely be saving them a ton of money on fuel. i've informed them that the plan is to go straight down to cedros and straight back. no dog leg right to go chase tuna that disappear like ghosts. if we have an absolutely certain bluefin tuna bite offshore, then ok. if it's absolutely wide open, then we could spend all week bobbing around out in the middle of the ocean. but for right now, the plan is to go straight down and straight back.
there are hundreds miles of baja coast that no one fishes. these waters contain calico, wsb, yellowtail, grouper, lingcod and halibut. if nothing else, we need 30 monster calico for our fres fish lunchs and dinners. the guys from last year will remember the fresh calico sandwiches. i want to try to get our chef to make us fish tacos as well. fresh calico is off the hook! and if we stick to this plan, we might save them 30% off their fuel bill.
my goal is for the best fishing experience that a 5 day trip can offer. we are already starting out with the best group of guys and the best boat. now we just need the fish to cooperate.

we are back at 5am on saturday, the 20th.......
If I remember right sport boats could not enter the harbor until 7am (Homeland Security) But that was seveal years ago things may have changed.
I don't mind sharing my room with someone. Don't worry about splitting the cost. I'm only staying one night (14th). I fly into SAN about 3PM on the 14th, fly out at 12:30 PM on the 20th. One stipulation - no snoring. I shared a room with a guy last month in Tampa at a 101st reunion. Great guy, but the loudest snorer you can imagine. Kept me up all night. The 12 pack of beer he had consumed didn't help. I think his wife has solid grounds for a divorce.
Does the Vagabond have a shuttle bus from the airport, or should I just catch a taxi?
I'll be crappie fishing on Lake Eufaula until Monday. I'll check back in when I get back.
Mike
we'll see about finding someone to pick you up on sunday. the drop off at the airport on saturday will be harder because everyone will be fully packed with gear.
Alan,
I'm happy to help pick up, share a room or a ride. Only issue is I'm leaving the Bay area on Sat, stopping somewhere overnight and getting through LA on Sunday before the beach crowd hits the freeway. Since I haven't done this before, I want time to get to San Diego, find where I'm going, and hit the tackle shops. Sounds like I'm the logical for Sun PM airport pickup. Anyone from the Bay area south is welcome to ride if they don't mind my overnight. Also, I booked a double room so it's available as well.

I'm all set at the Vagabond, too.
I'm being driven down rather than bring my car, so I'm hoping that on Monday morning one of you kind gents with extra space on his truck can help me transfer my gear from the hotel to the SOA. :)

from the vagabond it's only 25 yards to the top of the dock, the another 25 yards from the top of the dock to the boat. we'll grab carts and get everything loaded up for you.

Thanks, Alan, that will work out great. I know that H & M is right there, but didn't know whether they allow their carts to be taken to the hotel. Usually I leave out of Fisherman's Landing, which is all the way at the other end. :)
Waiting is getting harder by the day...! ::)

I understand the process of fuel surcharge, was just warned to have cash on hand in the possible case, some people had that happen on other local and LR boats. I am still a rookie in this long range game and want to be prepared.
I am driving down early Monday morning, arriving 5-6 am day of.
ok, i everyone is paid up and i had $40,800. a check for $33,550 was sent to annemarie last week, she got it and we are all paid for. the tip is based on 15% of the $33,550, so i will round it slightly down to $5000 even, leaving $2250. if our mexican licenses are $90 each ($2160 total), then we will have $90 left. if it's ok, i'll use that left over money to buy some goodies. i have a bucket full of swim baits and iron made by a local guy, rick berg, i have some laser minnows from pucci, and my usual box of 3 pound spools of berkely big game.
as far as cash goes. all you will need on the boat is enough to cover your drink tab and any other items of tackle that you buy from the boat. they also sell sweatshirts and t-shirts. you likely won't need too much.
Sounds good!
Thank you for the updates Alan.
Two months from right now... on the ocean, headed to Cedros, congratulating the Boss for remembering to bring his bag of reels! 8) :D ;D

Remember to breathe.
Always maintain contact with your bait, keep your line directly in front of you, and tuna-shuffle accordingly as your bait swims away from the boat.
Pull the rod tip up SLOWLY, and reel down FAST.
;)
FISH ON!!!!!

It's OK to be excited. You guys will get to fish spots that we drooled over as we passed them by last year. My guess is you will have a great variety of fish and a drag screamin' good time ;D ;D ;D

that's tough to hear. thoughts are with keith and his family.
May God bless Keven, Kieth and their family.

I may have last minute availability. Details need to be worked out so its very much up in the air, but a chance exists. Is there room for one more?
I cannot speak for Alan, we will have to wait for his confirmation, but I believe there are two spots still up for grabs.
Alan, has anyone shown interest in the last spot, 26?
nope, we still have that one spot open, but we are good with 24. having the 25th guy means we have a little money for swag, but you will be getting some back. we are just not going to do the $100 roll call that we did last year.
Hey guys, this is Keith from Texas. Got to tell everyone the scoop on what is going on around here. Around the first of the year I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I had a tumor in the throat right where it goes into the stomach. I went on Chemo and that stuff damn near killed me. Sure was tough. I will skip all the details to give you the good news. Today the tests indicate that all the cancer is dead and I made it through. Now I need to have some surgery next month to get the carcass out of my throat and I will be up and running. Alan, I hope you will save me a spot on next years trip. I hope all of you have a wonderful trip and I will be watching for the trip report
Great news Keith, hope you're back on board next year!
best news i've heard all week! go get fixed up and get that cranking arm in shape. we'll see you next year!!!
Great news Kieth..Damn glad you are OK...Looking forward to fishing with you next year.
