Penn / 716 Drag Knob Paint
Last post by jgp12000 - Today at 04:32:30 PM
I recently started using my 716 daily since receiving my custom built rod by Jason. The drag knobs are a weak point on the 716.So I ordered the cheapest drag knob I could find for science & painted it with Krylon Fusion all-in-one paint ( matte white). I put the OEM knob away & will update as time goes on. I am not sure if this knob is Delrin or not? I figured the matte white wouldn't stand out like gloss paint might. I put several light coats on & sanded some with wet/dry sand paper. The OEM knobs seem to yellow with age.

I am no machinist but was curious if the drag knobs could be made from metal like the old DQ knobs were & powder coated? It seems most offerings of the aftermarket knobs are black maybe the demand isn't high enough use white Delrin?

Fred made up a jig for doing that on the Dam Quicks.  He drilled a few different sized holes into a wooden block and taps out the bearing that way.  Worked really nicely for me.

I picked up a package of Berkley Powerbait Maxscent Moebas last evening at a local sports retailer.

It was an impulse/experimental buy as I recently saw a video of someone using them for Bass fishing.  A previous experimental buy was Berkley's Mousetail for winter pond fishing in Texas.

I'm not sure who comes up with these baits; so far the Mousetails work well for trout, so I'm going to try another crazy bait idea.

Picked up a rare DAM Quick Stationary Drum Bait Casting Reel with the "Quick-O-Mat" line counter, and a low serial number.

Every function is perfect in operation.

I will do a full restore on this.

The line counter is in yards —- so this is a North American version made in West Germany.  The European versions are in meters.

Got 4 of these now with the QOM —- including one new in the box with paperwork and a clear sideplate, as it is a salesman sample. Time to let others have them.

I have a lot of the Standards, as well as the S.W. 68's —- however, the ones with the line counter kit are far and few between.  One might come up for sale every few years.

Best Regards, Fred
