Title: Penn Squall 12 (SQL 12)
Post by: Bryan Young on December 05, 2012, 09:24:01 AM
Hi Folks,

I'm working on the complete tutorial, but here is a preview...all pics, no descriptions.

Okay folks, how many of you have found the 6+1 bearings?  the spool bearing sare opened, clenaed, and lubed with TSI.  The AR bearing was lubed with TSI321 mixed with corrosionX.  All other bearings were packed with grease.

Nice job Bryan. I liked the pic with the framing square for scale. I'll have to remember that. Bob

Looking good Bryan.  I didn't realize how little mono this reel holds.  BTW I'm not going back to count the 6+1 bearings. ;D

Hmm, this reminds me...

The next time someone has one of these reels apart, would they please be so kind as to measure one of the drag washers very accurately?

I'd like to know the major diameters including wings AND excluding wings, as well as width of wing @ base.

One of the best reels for surfcasting (price-quality-performance).When will the complete tutorial be finished, Bryan?

Bryan,
What did you think of the yoke springs? I serviced a SQL 15 last week and found them a bit lacking. What I mean by this is after reinstalling everything after the service I noticed a little bit of gear noise, so I thought. After a closer look I noticed it was the yoke rubbing on the pinion gear, as the yoke was not pushed flush enough with the little tension offered by the springs. I expanded the springs a little and the yoke now sat flush and did not rub against the gear grooves on the pinion. Just woundered if you had the same?

On the Squall 12 was just fine, but my personal feeling is that the yoke springs should have been a little taller so that it will have a more positive engagement when in gear.  I suppose I could have pulled them out a bit but when I got the reel back together, it worked just fine.

I have been kind of an Okuma fan, but that looks like it doesn't even need a pre=service- are these American made?

ARB only, no dogs in the Sqaull's. My Fathom 25N has dual dogs as well as the ARB but the dogs will only come into play and activate if the ARB fails.

Considering the Squall 12, being that it's designed for 12# mono or let's say 30# braided line, a good ARB should be fine and not go knuckle buster at drag ranges from 4# to 10#.  I can see why no dogs were implemented into the 12.  I haven't seen anything larger for comparison though.

Excellent distance casting surf reel, but I have read more than once that it is not as desireable as the USA made 525 Mag that preceeded it.
My first impression of mine is how extremely light it is. Love that drag.

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the pictorial. Just one question pls - how were you able to remove that left side bushing (key 40) from the sideplate? I've just serviced my 15 but could not remove that thing. Thanks.

Yes

I used a small deep socket to put over the bushing then tilted the bushing back and forth until it worked it's way out.  That's why there's grease marks on the top of the bushing...from the socket.

I've done the Penn Squall. They are neat little reels.  I would consider this reel a great replacement for a Newell 200 series.  Send me a PM when you have the time.

These are perfect for Surf Casting here on the Gulf Coast, IMHO.  I've used them and sold over 1/2 dozen without any problems.  Great free spool, strong drag, and the mag system is more than sufficient for anything we throw around here.  Also loved the 525s, and the Okuma 230 Convector was another great reel in this same size and theme.

hi Bryan, nice job! but i have one question?? What size was that deep socket you used to pull the brass bearing retainer 9/32 deep 12 point? i need to do a tear apoart and repair of the same reel, but in a hotel room in S.C near fort jackson, for my oldest son who is coming up from Fla to meet us for my youngest sons graduation from Army Boot camp on 6/1/17! He says the reel makes a grinding sound that gets louder as he turns up the magnet level. I have experience with the older 525 mag, which has a bearing not shown on the diagrams from penn. It needed replacement and i measured it and got it from Boca, it was a small 3 by 12 MM. I believe it supported the pinion but i cant remember now, but Tony from penn did help me on it, say 3 years or so ago

I knew someone would ask an excellent question that I couldn't answer. I cannot recall. I'm sorry. I have not had a Squall in for service since I posted the tutorial. I suspect it was a 8 or 10 mm deep socket or standard equivalent.

Correction. One of the pics shows a 9/32" socket. It's a 6 point because that is all I have. A 12 point would work just as fine. The points are contacting the tube anyway. 12 point would probably be better.

Serviced my Squall 12 and now it sometimes acts funny.  After paying out some line, when you throw it back into gear, it stays in freespool.  You end up turning the handle and then it engages.  Only happens once in a while; most of the time it engages normally.

Is this a symptom of the weak yoke springs?

Thanks for any and all ideas.

John
