No rush. Sorry again about your dad.

Interested in joining, those dates look great. what's the cost BTW?

Hi Alan,
Please put me on this 3-day. IMHO, it's the "better" of the two 3-days.
The June trip is highly iffy since I've been on my share of "early season," local, multi-days where boiling BFT disappear moments before reaching the boat positioned in their path.
Thanks,
Wai
I am in! Thanks Alan
Alan, I would like to join this list, Rich
Alan,

I'm super interested but need more intel...
Is it a standard SD trip? Or Is this one of those boat down then fly home trips?
What other major expenses are there?
I've been cleared by the wife - please add me to the list! I'll pm my contact info.
Pretty standard 3-day format, out on the morning 3day one, back on morning of day four.
So only extra cost is fish processing? Are non alcoholic drinks included in the charter cost?
Lots of extras - fish processing, drinks, tip, meals off the boat, terminal tackle if needed.
I'm considering signing up for this trip but gotta see if I can get the time off from work.....
I got permission from the wife and my request for time off has been approved so I'd like to be added to the wait list please....
There is room on the June trip.

I'm really hoping I can make it onto this trip as the majority of the multi-day trips out of SD are already sold out!
I'm 2nd on the wait-list and just how my chances are of making on this trip.... Alan how deep into the wait-list do these trips usually run?
I'm wondering if I should make a reservation on another 3 day just to ensure I can fish before Nov....
not sure. i'm going to send out requests for checks really soon. we'll see if anyone drops out.

I got firsthand experience with those big ole fish. once the line drops to 45 degrees the rod butt is under my right arm. leaning into the rod as the boat rises with the swell and cranking like crazy when the boat drops into the trough. Rinse and repeat as needed.
Alan,
Has there been any discussion on engaging a processor yet for then return trip? Last year it was hectic to say the least and I almost had to split the catch in the parking lot if not for Sportsman sea food that hooked me up with no reservation.

I was wondering about this too. Alan who do you usually use?
I usually use 5 Star and get same day service but I also make my reservation the day I book my trip.
Last couple trips we have been using Fisherman's Processing. Alan had made boat reservations in advance. Warren Hamachi used Mario's on the 8 day, but I don't know what his outcome was. We were able to load the cars, eat breakfast across the street from FP and had about an hour wait until I was on my way home. FP was very organized and had plenty of manpower to sort and load the fish. And they provide free ice. Bill
I'll make arrangements through Fisherman's Processing again. Obviously, you can go with anyone else you want.

As long as it's same day service I'll use whoever the boss uses!
Wife and I just decided we are retiring to Arizona. This makes fishing the pacific a better option than the gulf. I would ask to be added to the list just so my name gets in there. I understand this is very late but I need to get started on learning the pacific and the routine. If the list is closed no big deal. I'm just going through the motions until next year.
James Danford
James, thank you. I added you to the waiting list. As you can see, it's a pretty set group. Except for the July Cedros trip, we should be filled. It's hard to break into the group because priority is given to previous attendees. I will keep you posted. Thanks!!! Alan
Appreciate it and I understand. It is pretty much the same with 60 hour trips in the gulf. I figure I will move up eventually. I probably need to rethink some of my gear and terminal tackle anyway.
Thanks.
Has anyone's check been cashed?
just curious because I still have a bunch of $ in my account and am hoping this doesn't mean my check is lost in the mail...
Mine hasn't been cashed yet. Alan was heading to PV (lucky guy!) last Wednesday. I'm guessing he hasn't done a bank run yet.

gentlemen, welcome and thank you very much for signing up for this trip. if you have been following the san diego reports, you know that they have been catching bluefin and that they have been getting bigger. this bodes well for us! many of you have done these short range bluefin trips many times before and know what to expect. and many have not. what i would like to do is go over everything from where to stay on arrival to how to get your fish processed before departure.
1. Passports and licenses - everyone must have a current passport, and i believe that all of you do. we will most likely need california fishing licenses. for most of us that live in california, make sure that your california license has an ocean enhancement stamp on it. licenses for short term or out of state people can be purchased at the landing. so far, the boats are fishing in US waters. if we have to go to mexico, then a passport and mexican license will be needed. you will already have your passport. the landing will get mexican licenses for us.
2. Arrival in San Diego - most of us will be arriving the day before. there are two hotels at the landing. one is the old vagabond, now called the sea harbor hotel, on scott street. https://www.seaharborhotel.com/ the other is the ramada on 1403 Rosecrans St, San Diego. both places are dumps, but for one night they're fine. if you don't have a traveling buddy already, check the list and see who lives close to you and send them an email or text. you might be able to travel together and save some money. we usually gather at miguel's cocina on scott street the night before. drinks at 5pm, dinner at 6.
3. Rods and reels - i highly recommend two speed lever drag reels only, avoid single speed lever drag and star drag reels if you can. lighter reels should be loaded with braid and fluorocarbon leaders. for heavier rigs, braid and mono might do quite well so that you can avoid the high cost of fluorocarbon.
here you will get as many recommendations as there are people to voice them. judging by the way fishing has been, i would definitely recommend three rods and reels - a 30 pound outfit, then a 40 to 50 pound outfit, and finally a 60 to 80 pound outfit. if you have something in a 100 to 130 pound range, that's fine. so, basically 3 rods and 3 reels is all you might need for a trip like this. set the drags with a scale to give you 30% of your topshot line weight at strike. as an example, a 50 pound rig would be set to 15 pounds of drag at strike. then push the reel to full and see what kind of drag you get at full. that way you know. just in case you hook into something big. if you are going to need help with gear, please let me know.
4. Hooks - for bluefin, i would recommend ringed owner circle hooks in 2/0, 4/0 and 6/0 sizes. pocket packs of six to eight hooks in these sizes should be fine. you could even go with 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0. it's just not necessary to have every size. https://www.ringedhooks.com/products/owner-mutu-circle-ringed-hooks.html
an assortment of small j-hooks is also good, maybe in #4, #1 and #2/0. maybe pocket packs of six to eight count pack of these as well. https://www.ringedhooks.com/products/owner-flyliner-live-bait-ringed-hooks.html
you really don't need that much. and if you run out of hooks, you've had a fabulous trip!!!!!
5. Jigs - these are more to catch anglers than fish, but they do work. sometimes these fish will only bite the smaller colt snipers. https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Current-Sniper-Fishing-Lures/dp/B07GTDSQFW
james kikkawa has a really nice line of the 100 to 300 gram larger knife jigs. you can reach him at (626) 988-3632 or on Instagram @jameskikkawa or @westcoastjiggerz or Facebook James Kikkawa. he's a smart kid and really keeps track of what's biting, so he's a good one to talk to.
and lastly, there are the monster knife jigs and flat falls that go up to 500 grams in weight. right now, the fish are smaller, but you never know when these larger fish that eat these larger jigs will come through. check with james, but you might have to go with amazon.
6. sinkers - we might use sinker rigs, which involves a live bait on a mono or fluoro leader and an 8, 10, 12 or 16 ounce torpedo sinker that is rubber banded 15 to 20 feet above the bait. a #64 size rubber band works great for this application.
7. troll/kite rotation - for trolling and kite/balloon fishing, the boat will have gear, so you don't have to worry. if you have a 100 to 130 pound line class rod and reel, feel free to bring it. we will likely not be trolling much, but we should be running a kite or balloon and there will be a rotation. random numbers will be drawn to pick the order for that.
8. Boarding the boat - we'll have breakfast at the denny's on rosecrans first thing in the morning. i'll need everyone there by 9am. we will board somewhere between 10 and 11am. cabins will be assigned. so will rod storage, port and starboard. tackle box storage will not be pre-assigned, but you will not be needing a full long range tackle box, anyway. everything you need for tackle should fit in a shoe box. it's only a 3 day trip.
9. Fish processing - we have reservations with Fisherman's processing (619) 255-3128 for our return date, July 4th. the price is now up to $1.50 per pound of whole fish. you will need to call them and confirm. i generally go for 5 mil bags, 1 pound packs, bellies, collars and same day service. we will try to get back to the dock ahead of the other boats. once docked, we will need some serious hustle to get gear off the boat. then we have to get fish off the boat, up to the sidewalk and to the processor. there may be other processing companies at the dock. you can certainly book with someone else if you wish to, but you absolutely must make a reservation ahead of time. Five Star is at (888) 253-9692 and Sportsmen's Seafood (619) 224-3551.
breakfast will be a perry's cafe while we wait for fish. perry's is right across the street from fisherman's processing.
10. Things to do now - if you are looking for someone to travel with or split a room at a hotel with, check the list below, see where people live and get in contact. book a hotel now if you need one. i will be checking in and talking to all of you later as well to see where everyone is with that. also, figure out if you need same day fish processing and contact fisherman's processing or one of other two companies and get a reservation in. getting fish done the same day is always stressful. there might be shipping options or late pick up options, but none of these is easy or cheap.
that's is for now. i'm certain that there will be more later. thanks! alan
so much to do and so little time. :d
Thanks for the rundown Alan!
One question (for right now)...... Do we need to bring our own bedding?
no, we should be fine.
Quote from: alantani on May 02, 2022, 06:02:13 PMno, we should be fine.
That's great to hear, at least that's a couple less things to pack

Just picked up 2 more sniper style jigs in colors I haven't ever seen...I bought the chrome for bft and the mint/white for yt! I'm usually a Shimano Coltsniper guy but was really intrigued by the colors, size and shape!
The Zakana jigs have caught many of BFT and YFT for sure! I've used 80g-120g range with success. You guys should have a great trip!
During my stint on the Sacramento River jigging for king salmon the most violent strikes I ever had were on the black (dark) jigs. Wouldnt surprise me if the darker Snipers and clones did the same. Bill
Less than a month to go and I am getting stoked! I've started to slowly get my gear together. Just got more heavy duty jig leader supplies....
I'll be bringing jig leader making supplies. I'll have crimps, swivels, solid rings and split rings for 80,180,300 and 400# leaders.
If you need leaders made we can make them on the boat but you need to supply the assist hooks at a minimum.

Are you rigging straight to the jig or using split rings? I just got the last bit of hardware to start making some, but I am only going to make 200lbs leaders. Now you got me thinking of other line weightings.
I connect to the jig with a split ring rather than crimp to the jig. My best jig fish was only 128# but my gear is rated above that and no issues so far.
400# swivel crimped at the top, 3-4' leader crimped to a solid ring at the bottom.... jig attached to the leader via ultra split ring
Attaching the jig to a split ring makes it really easy to change jigs. I'm going to try a flat fall rigged the same way (attached to a solid ring via a split ring) to see if it still retains its action.
Btw, I'm bringing 2 speed jigging rigs, a 50# and an 80#, along with what feels like 20#'s of knife jigs.
Keeping an eye on the June trip - I hope you guys run into the big boys.
Re-rigged Charkbait 7oz (~200g) Metal Swimmers:
150+ kg swivel -> 220lb split ring -> 9/0 Eagle Claw L2004 -> 100lb braid bridle -> 7oz Metal Swimmer
The silver finish 220lb split rings and white bridles will get a black Sharpie go-over. Looking to pick up heavier split rings and swivels at the Squidco Pre-Father's Day sale for the heavier knife jigs (not pictured).
Watching the other thread for the trip leaving tomorrow has got me motivated to get my sh!t together..
Today I took some time to make 300# jig leaders, organize my terminal tackle and darken the markings on my spectra on my 60, 80 and 100# rings!
and between now and trip time you'll do it at least 3 more times! Anticipation isn't just an old Carly Simon song!
I'm so ready to go! My gear note so much. I'm putting together leaders and doing some last minute things. I have enough jigs..... I hope.
If someone is willing I'll need a hand setting my drags with a scale once we're waiting in line or onboard....

Is there going to be a fuel surcharge?
We had a $25 per day surcharge, not bad considering the price of fuel.
Thanks for the info Lee. I guess I'll be bringing a bit more cash with me
Between the fuel and Mexican license it was $105. Bill
Just wanted to check in to see if anyone needs anything for this trip? Anyone need jig leaders?
I'm rigging up as follows
25/30# bait
40# bait
60# sinker rig
80# daytime jig, live mackerel, heavy sinker
100# nighttime jigs
Spinner 50# snipers, 80# poppers
Im bringing a 50#, 100# and a 130# and 40 pounds of iron. :d
I'm bringing a 40, 60 (speed jig), 80, 100 and a jig stick with a Newell 332 on it. My nod to OG gear.
It's pretty exciting to see the bite pick up again. I'm hoping the new moon puts the tuna into a feeding frenzy. And as much as I like lures, I'm bring plenty of hooks. Happy to share.
One more week!
LOL, I'm bringing nuttin but a camera, bedding, and change of clothes. I'ma gear orphan and a So-Cal virgin
looks like i'm bring gear for both you and carlos.
Much appreciated, Alan.
no problem. if you would, please, just cover the cost of the fluorocarbon and any lost braid or gear. thanks! ;D
If someone needs to drop out I can go.
Any info on a gas surcharge?
Fuel prices have not dropped since the 6/14 trip, expect at least $25 a day fuel surcharge.

Looks like a lot of boats have switched over to targeting yt with the slow bft bite.... hopefully they start biting again later this week.....

Yes, I'm taking Randy's slot.
Fishing has been horrible for the last 2 weeks. Big Joe's trip had 3 fish for 24 guys. Don't know what boat or how many days. Joey, the kid, just sent me a text. His boat found a night bite and called the other boats in. Score one for the kid!
Gear is all packed and ready to go just need to grab some 60# flouro for the just in case thats what is working. and maybe reconsider bringing a 25# rig :d

swing by the house as soon as you can. need to start getting things loaded. i could also use a hand getting the 3rd row seat out of the vehicle. it's not that heavy, just an awkward size for one person.

So just 1 big rig for the night jigging now? I might have a gap in the 60lbs range. Any one know if the 42gr to 120gr colts are getting bit?

If need be because they are refusing to bite 80+lb, splice a length of 60 on to your 80 top shot and dial back drag to 18 lbs.
Jig at night with 100# and don't worry about it. You're using a 200# bite leader anyway, right? Going with lighter line would help with a sinker rig during the day... maybe!
According to Alan's latest email he wants us using 16oz sinkers for sinker rigs....
Anyone got extra heavy sinkers? All I have are 8 & 10oz...

You could MacGyver it and attach an 8 & 10 oz or two 8's using two separate rubber bands, one after another.
If your sinker is lighter your bait will be above the ones that are heavier. Most of the tangles occurred after a bite... those BFT aren't team players and don't follow the line straight to the boat! Especially Bill's 2nd fish!

I though you specialized in those types?!
With the group of individuals on this tri it's not like I am going to be able to impart a lot of info (and besides, conditions can and do change overnight) but here is what we encountered on the last 3 days of our RP 8 day. We were fishing the same grounds and schools as the other 29+ boats chasing bluefin, and most likely the exact same area you will be fishing. For us (and virtually every other boat): LOTS of boils, foamers, shiners, etc. during the day. Really wonderful to behold. There are PLENTY of bluefin out there. Now the other side of the coin....There are also TONS of microbait: giant bait balls of 2"-3" anchovies that the bluefin are hammering with abandon during the daylight hours. In addition to "just being bluefin" and sinking out, they absolutely were NOT interested in the excellent grade of sardines available, or any form of jig or iron tossed into the boil. Every one of our 9 bluefin was caught at night, on medium size jigs (320-380 gram) and fished deep depending on what the captain called out (everybody on an AT trip already knows this, but metered line is a requirement, not a luxury for this type of fishing). On the shallow side at night they would get up as far as 120 deep, anywhere down to 300. And we would fish for them all night catching anywhere from 2200 up to 0300. Good luck guys, look forward to the AT gang getting out there and putting a hurt on them! - john

Well, I am eating poke bowl tonight 😁
All my gear is packed and ready to go. I put flouro leaders on my 30, 40, and 60# rigs. My heavy rigs already have mono topshots on them and I'll add flouro to them if it's needed...
I'll be starting my drive at some point after work Thursday night and catch a few zzzz somewhere on the way down and plan on being in the parking lot around 6-6:30 am.
I'll see everyone at Denny's for breakfast!
Have a fun and productive trip.
Go get'em guys!

Thanks for the update.
gentlemen, our trip is fast approaching. there is something that please needs to be done today, please send a text message to denise at the SOA office with a photo of your passport. also, please let her know if you have a mexican fishing permit. if you do not, she will get a mexican permit for you. there are things that will need to be taken care of this week.
california license - you will also need a california fishing license. if you do not have one, you will have to get one at the landing.
rough weather - i'm sorry, but it's going to be brisk during our trip. i would recommend light foul weather gear, or at least a medium weight jacket. deck boots will be essential
16 ounce weights - we had horrific tangles on the last trip. i must encourage, possibly insist, that people use 16 ounce lead weights for sinker rigs. by using the same weights, we should be able to decrease the tangles. it's just like rockcod fishing.
500 gram jigs - they might be the only way that you can get a jig down far enough if the fish are deep. i can help you rig them.
800 to 100 pound line class rods and reels - all of my heavy gear is already spoken for. if you do not have one, you might have to rent one from the boat.
dinner, june 30th - anyone in town the day before, please meet us at miguel's cocina on scott street, 5pm. it's walking distance from the harbor.
breakfast, july 1st - denny's on rosecrans, 7am, also walking distance from the landing. when you are facing the H&M landing office, look way down the sidewalk, about 50 yards, to the right. that's where the boat is.
boarding, july 1st - line up by 9am. we should be boarding by 10am. we will depart as soon as boarding is complete.
fishing has been brutally slow. every bite has to be converted, every fish needs to make it onto the deck. if we all gear up properly and work together as a team, it can greatly improve our fish counts. more later.
Text pic sent and received...

my truck winch will do 800# but I do not have a power pole for it..... ;0)
Weather is looking sporty for this trip! 10+ winds the whole time with 4' swells (under 10 second period) and 6' waves.
Could someone please pm me the texting # for Denise ?
Thank you
Ted
i sent you a text.
Done !!
Thanks boss
We get 6 or 7 spots for rods along the house. They'll take up to 7 1/2'ers. 8's have to go up front at a 45 or go in the rocket launchers at the tackle station.
I'm planning on bringing this time:
30# SX Raptor/UC Tilefish Jr Bait
50# JX Raptor/UC Predator 76 Bait/Colt Snipers
50# Tranx 500/PSW 909XH Surface iron/Poppers
60# Mak 15T/PCH 741XXH Bait/Sinker
80# Mak 16/Centaur 76 Bait/Sinker/Jigs
100# Mak 20/Viper 76 Jigs
A smaller tackle bag!
4 out of my 6 set-ups are 8' rods....

Any idea where they're fishing? I can't seems to find them on Marinetraffic?????

Hopefully it's Ensenada !!5543.jpeg
A lot of fish out Ensenada are from Pangas trolling Madmacs 150yds out.
For the trollers: The SOA has rod holders in the rail which is solid. Trouble is that some lures will not get below the surface. Lugs are suggested for trolling reels, we were able to loop a rod strap through the middle 3 holes on the rail to let the rod hang over the stern which kept the lure down.
Might also think about an AFTCO flat line release clip....
If we are going down to Ensenada, there is always colonet and plenty of white fish. :cf
I just spent a small fortune in terminal tackel... so my small shoe box will be Shaq size.

PJ, Yup with the new 16oz weights I'm rethinking what heavy jigs to bring. Also, I was able to find one 200mm in pink. Any thoughts about the trolling?
I see new posting on SOA Facebook. They're into yellowtail, a few yellowfin, and maybe even bonito. That is a report from 10:30 this morning. I see nothing but bent rods in the background

Bring a trolling strap or flat line clip to keep the line closer to the water unless you're trolling 100+ yds back. Even then...

There is none on the boat? I don't have straps or clips. I guess I've only seen guys on Youtube just using the rod holder on private boats. AI'm always leaning something here.
The SoA has a closed transom with 45 degree holders. You can wrap a trolling strap through it to hold the rod lower like the boats with a rail at the transom... or use a flat line clip attached to your reel. Mike liked the look of a closed transom at the cost of functionality!
I'm thinking about dropping my 100# rig and subbing in a 20-25# outfit.
I'm already packed and ready to leave in the morning. For better or worse, it's too late to change.
Hope the roads treat everyone well - see you at Denny's Friday morning!
Mark T, you might be on to something.

If you can't find a Mad Macs in 200 mm, a 160 mm will work just fine.
I've heard of people getting them on the big 240 too.
How is the weather forecast shaping up ?

Half way to San Clemente Is... 12+ kt wind, 4' swell, 6' waves. Higher winds (17+ kt) down by Colnet. Kinda crappy everywhere this weekend!
BFT have been off but on the plus side, YFT and Dorado are showing up.

From BD:
Looks like with some of the pressure off the fish they are biting
The Intrepid called in with LIMITS of Bluefin Tuna caught last night (40-80lbs).
The Outrider called in with LIMITS (16) of Bluefin Tuna and 35 Calico Bass for 4 anglers on their 2.5 day trip.
The Fortune is returning this morning with LIMITS (30) of Bluefin Tuna for 15 anglers on a private 1.5 day charter.
No matter what is biting, I still won't be at work and my line will be in the water. Looking forward to meeting you all at breakfast. Safe Travels
