I cant leave any thing alone for long.
I grabbed one of my rougher Super spools to take to the shop & see about milling out a bigger hole for a bigger diameter drag stack.
When I arrived I noticed this spool, I think an earlier version had 4 screws in the bottom. I was aware of these being out there but didnt relize one of my reels had it. These spools are much different than the Super spools with out them. Not as much extra material to work with.
What in the world is the purpose of these 4 screws in the bottom of this Super spool. Maybe a bearing surface ? ...Jeff
If I remember right Jeff, I think they hold the two halves of the spool together.
Mike if your right I have to say I'm quite embarrassed once again by these Quicks....Jeff
I've got one super spool like that and a couple without the screws. Hope to get to them this weekend.
steve
Well, Mike you were right...Jeff
Jeff, if you could...please post a pic of the drag stack from that spool. Mine only had one keyed metal washer! I think the resistex washer was missing, as there was room to add one. Curious to see what all belongs in there. 8)
This may also help some of you on the Supers --
Best,
Fred
Same thing in this one. I'll check & see if any of my other Supers have this style spool & take a look at the drag stack.
The drag recess on this split spool is not as deep or as big a diameter as the recess in the solid spools.

It looks like there is no room for an eared washer.

I agree. There is not enough room for the stack shown in that schematic. The steel washer I have with this spool takes up well over 1/2 of the available space below the retainer clip.
Mike, a box on the front porch revealed 2 more Super reels
one of these reels had the split spool along with another I already had.
As you can see all 3 of my spools have just the single keyed washer.
I believe what may be going on here from inspection of the drag recess is that the friction washer is basically degrading over time to a powdery residue / sludge.
While we are discussing spools let's look at the drag knobs. I've run into 3 variations. The pic shows what I believe are the most prominent 2.
The 2 bladed one is aluminum the triangular 3 blade is plastic. I "think" the 3 bladed is on the earlier versions. The line counter supers I have all have the 3 blade. They both seem to work well. They will swap out threads are the same. Though I prefer the aluminum ones... Dang! These are really cool O'l Reels!! ...Jeff
Yeah,
There are a lot of drag knobs for Quicks -- fortunately, even between many years -- most will still fit within the same model line.
Here are a few of the most commonly used drag knobs and crank knobs.
Best,
Fred

Wow...not what I was expecting here...I thought my spool was the odd duck!
All four spools with the same drag stack(or whatever you call a single washer in a hole!) pretty well tells the story. I agree there must have been a fiber washer of
some sort under that keyed washer...surely it wouldn't rub metal on metal. A Quick resistex will fit behind the keyed washer, as that is what I used on mine. I can't help but believe a multi-disc drag would be a major improvement on these reels. Like you were saying, enlarge the diameter of the hole and add slots for "eared" washers...this reel would be a beast! 8)

Not to mention there isn't even any slots
for an eared washer! I bet the spools that use the 3-stack have a better drag than this spool. :-\

Mike they do provide more, smoother drag based ongiving it a quick check amongst my reels.

I knew they would, it only makes sense. I bet those spools with the 1 disk set up like mine were rough...metal on metal...since the friction disc was gone on them. Mine is smooth with the Resistex disc added, but it's not gonna develop the power of a 3-stack. I'd like to have my spool modified like you were saying, bored out for larger discs. There appears to be room. Can't wait to see how it works. 8)
Pst...hey Fred...do you have any of the 3-stack style spools? Looks like I'm gonna need one.

Mike, I have no doubt Fred has that spool. I have 3 of the multi-disk-drag spools and will gladly trade one for your single disk spool.
Also, the Quick 550 spool fits the 270. The 2 that I have are plastic but they have a huge 'well' and can easily hold more drag disks. Hmmm...
Just sent a set of 270 disks to Adam to cut the 0.31" titanium drags that Sheridan had cut. I think a 5 stack may fit with 0.5mm CF. Adam might be washed in Irma. Georgia.
Sorry to hijack ... I'll start a new thread in a bit.
Love those Dam open faced reels!

Wow Steve, these are some interesting points you bring up. Thanks for the enlightenment! 8)
Steve, a 5 stack would be real nice. Not that I would use all the drag it could produce but it would be smoother at the drag range I do use. would'nt take as much adjustment for a bit more drag when needed with fish on.
Mike, a friend of mine who is semi retired & spends most of his spare time fishing all over the world, knows reels inside out, agrees with what Fred told me, that these Supers will handle 50 lb. line & appropriate drag. I've no reason to push mine past 30 -40. 15 lbs. of smooth drag from them & I will be extremely happy. Have other reels better suited for line past that ponit....Jeff

I'm going to try 60# with close to 15# drag.
We will see

Oh Ya..... I fish a lot of my reels with line heavier than what the drag range will reach. 2 reasons, well 3.
I fish primarly for big catfish.
Heavier line is more abrasion resistant.
The concern with this one of course being as line comes off the spool drag increases. With heavier line I dont have to worry about my drag setting as much when a fish hits at the end of a super long cast or when they pull a bit of line out....Jeff

I'll be going through my inventory of Supers over the next few days, Mike.
I am putting together an order for Jeff on some parts -- so I will check spool possibilities and variations for you, also.
Just need to count the number of Supers -- around 30-40, maybe -- then make sure there are enough spools for the good reels -- and see what is left out of the loose spools.
Best,
Fred

No hurry Fred...I'm going to wait and see how Jeff and Steve's modifications go...and will probably mod my spool based on their research. Actually, my spool's drag ended up very smooth with a teflon washer under the spool and that single resistex inside...
but...it's topping out around 10-12lbs. That's fine for the most part...
but again...we all love a little extra horsepower! ;D
Mike, I've had to put thid mod on the back burner for few days. I've got gun stuff to get caught up on. However what I'm leaning towards right now is figuring out a mod for the drag that takes very little or no milling on the reel.
My thoughts are most of us would be happy with a "fishable" 15 lbs. of drag from these Supers. You agree with that ?

My thoughts exactly Jeff. 8)
Here is a look at the quality of Adam's work on these CF's, keyed, and eared SS washers.
First class, as usual.
Best,
Fred
OK, when can I get a set ?
If they work which I don't see being an issue I will need 12 sets... Jeff
Hey Jeff, When Fred 's done with my 2 speed you're welcome to whatever is left of the drag washers. Not sure what that will be but they might be useful.
Hey I appreciate that...Jeff
Fred, I wouldnt get too excited just yet. Those washers are grade 5 titanium. At a minimum, the washers with the tab on the inside will need to be filed to a sharp corner. Id recommend fresh quality files, and nothing chinese. I use Nicholson files, and the made in mexico ones are perfectly fine. Typical home depot/lowes files wont last long on these washers though.
With all the interest these seem to be gathering, it looks like Ill be doing a production run. I will put a sign-up thread in my section this weekend and keep it open for 2 weeks, give or take, to get an idea of how many I should have cut.
I Got files that will get rid of any thing thats not proper for a working part ;D ;D

Sorry if this seems stupid but what section is your section? I'd be very interested in some of the washers or even these early ones that require some filing. I was going to lap down some of the factory chrome over brass ones but these would hold up much better.

Fred if you end up with any supers that you don't deem ones being fit to rebuild/use I gladly buy one off you for back up parts to mine, that and my single speed I still need to track down a donor for the rotor.

Probably won't have time until tomorrow to check, Andy --
It takes a couple of hours to go through reels, spools, parts, and pieces in 5 locations.
Today starts a 90 day stretch of cutting, hauling, clearing, splitting firewood -- because the weather is favorably colder now. Was 44 last night
Goal is to work 4 or 5 hours a day pretty hard -- five days a week -- then keep up with reels, Church, family, Life in general.
10 days before Christmas -- hope to stop for another month or so.
This tree mortality deal has taken a 3 year chunk out of our lives -- nearly 2 down and 1 to go.
Best,
Fred
no rush Fred, and not sure why I had a double post with one just having the quote not sure how I managed to do that.

Hi guys,
How do the plastic 550 spools hold up? I've picked up a really tidy example, I didn't need it at all but will now line it up next to my 704. Just wondering if the plastic spools will take 15lb of drag? I'd be doing similar to others here with their 270 spools, using 50-60lb braid and fishing it at 12-15lb.
Cheers,
Andrew
I've only a little experience with the Quick plastic spools using
40 & 50 line.
So far they have done well. I do release all tension on the line when stored & have since gone to using only a 10' mono top shot
Attached to braid. I think braid may be better on these plastic spools... Jeff
Great, I've got nothing to lose so will use it until something untoward happens!
