This my target date for an early season FREEZER special. I already have a room booked for Sunday at Motel 6 with 2 beds..You wanna GO? you  wanna add a Saturday to the room? Do you want to split the costs or just meet me there and go fishing? This trip is out of Morro Bay Landing on the Endeavor, it is a 12 hour trip and it's on a Sunday to Cape San Martin..Where the Big Lings swim. Lot's of cheap rooms in Morro Bay in April...Then they start to climb!!! I'm going...Are you?

Big Tim!
I'm in.
I have to stay at the Sundown Inn ,  http://www.yelp.com/biz/sundown-inn-morro-bay
and you Don't want to listen to me snore anyhow!
Seriously, I'm ready. We have been surfishing 3 times since  Thanksgiving with a grand total of two grassies.
It has been pretty rough.
I think you can get at least 15 to 20 folks together.
Alan? Dom? Wayne? Brian?  Fresno Crew?
Maybe even Fred?

Best,
JT

I would love to fish with you guys on 4/17, but I am a true coward when it comes to this nasty ocean north of Point Conception. I have blocked off the date and if there is still space available three days before the trip and the weather forecast is 15 kts or less, I'm in!

Had a nice talk with the guy in the office of the Endeavor (can't remember his name).

He said it typically takes 10-16oz to get shrimp flies to the bottom where we're going.

He said if the wind is over 12n they will scrap the trip.

I've never fished out of this port so that's all I know.

At least you're gonna be in a neat place with your family if you can't go fishing..Too bad you can't make it because it'd be a great trip to put your slow fall jigs through the ringer...

I've heard good things about the Cutbait Herring for lings and halibut. The orange, "Redfish Flou" ones are 8", 9oz and the Puffin pattern is 10", 16oz.

Going to throw them with my Metaloid 5NII, sweet little reel I upgraded a little.

How deep do you guys normally drop around the Morrow Bay area? Different depth for lings and rock fishing?

Scott, 140-240' drop and those baits look reel good for what we do. I must say though a 10oz. Hex Bar with no bait was reelin' in the Lings.

So 10-16oz Hex jigs should be cool?...Referring to Steve's post on the first page about recommended weight to get the flies down there.

Are those fly setups available online as well, or do you guys make your own setups?

Scott,

You can put your own shrimp flies on or buy them already tied.  You are allowed 2 hooks (treble counts as one)

These pre-tied have a snap on the bottom for sinker and have two flies above.

http://www.fishermanswarehouse.com/shop/p-line-farallon-feather/

If the bottom weight is a hex bar w/hook, or any other weighted lure with a hook, you can only have one teaser fly above that.

Tim, your flies look dangerous! Big flies big lings?

It is my experience that you cannot have a large enough hook for lings. Reduces the by-catch and need for barro-trauma rigs.

I got some 9/0 & 11/0 circle hooks to test this theory. Going to rig them to a hoochi skirt also a frozen squid. The hooks provided on pre-tied ling rigs are considerably smaller.

Should we bring our own squid, or does the boat provide it? What bait is normally carried in the bait tanks, sardines, chovies, squid?

Scott, they will have frozen squid that they will cut up into chunks for bait and it works quite well. I almost always bring a box or 2 of whole frozen squid to either use whole or to cut into long slim strips (deadly). They have it available at the check in.

BT

New color pattern just for our trip  ;D

PJ. This is what was left in my box from Dec. & I think I lost 2 jigs... 4-6oz. in the shallower water (140 +/-), 6-8oz. swimbait heads, 8, 10, 12 ounce jig variety, 12 & 16 ounce lead for the shrimp flies (I like getting down without tangles). Of coarse my shrimp flies always a killer for the Reds.

Since I missed last years SOA, Salmon and Halibut were spotty at best, and my Crab Combo trips all got cancelled, I figure even I can catch Rock Cod.
Sounds like a good party-I'm in!@ Reservation made.

This is shaping up to be quite a big group of fishermen going on this trip and I'm glad I'll be a part of it!

I wonder how many more need to sign up before AT takes up the whole boat????

My last conversation with Brad was that he has a set price for any charter whether it be 1 or 32 anglers .... $3200.00 was his mark. You have to understand that this guy just left Virg's Landing and and purchased his own boat and needs any an all support any will give.I trust trust this guy and have fished with him for many years.

Sorry..I fat fingered the total...$3200.00 ... 30 @$110.00 and $3500.00 for a Saturday as they can run the boat 2 times in the summer. Mid week charter someone might be able to wrangle a better price?

30 Passengers, $110 each:

30 × 110 =3,300

Weekday Limited Load Special, 18 Passengers, $150 each:

18 × 150 =2,700

They obviously expect the flow of customers during the weekend, and have to work a little between the weekends and take a cut to get people in; that is a $600 difference between loads, and a 12 person advantage on a limited load...

If we talked Brad and the landing into running, say 20 guys at $150, would you guys be interested in covering the extra $40 for your own ticket?

20 × 150 =$3,000

I figure the trip is two months away, so the landing may not look at it as losing $300 on a weekend being this is a reserved trip so far out, and we, as well as the crew, would have a easier time with a limited load.

Just talking out load...

-Scott

We have 10 signed up. My price that I quoted was from Brad. $3200.00 for a Sunday 12 hour trip & $3500.00 for a Saturday. He also said that those numbers would have to be confirmed with the landing. We had 32 + captain and crew. It was crowded! I do not know if a better deal could be had ?? I haven't checked.
Virg's Landing does a 5 am to 5 pm Sunday trip on the Princess that is $109 per person and 35 max. but the boat is 65' so my guess is their pricing will be about the same. In years past I have tried to get a limited load trip at a higher price per person but have always fell short of my mark and wound up being an open charter. It seems a lot easier to get a multi day charter filled up like Alan's SOA trip than a 1 day Rock Cod trip.
If we could get say 20-24 to sign up I would definitely be willing to ask for a better deal and try to close the charter, providing all were willing to pony up the extra $$$.

Glenn doesn't work on the weekends, but the front desk says 10 hour Sunday closed charter would be $2950.00 unless we could work something out with Glenn. I thought Brad's price was a 12 hour charter?

Tim, I would be happy to pay more if it meant that we had an all-Tani group and a little bit more room to stretch out, but I'm fine with the open party option too.

I  just read all the threads about last years trip that I bailed out on (won't happen again) ;D ;D ;D I'm just so blessed to happen across so many friends that want to get together to BS and Fish. Alan I hope you are getting close to 100% and do you know if Eddie and your Dad will join in the fun? Talked to Glenn today  ;D Great guy and he gave me a price on a closed 12 hour charter that I don't think we could make, especially with 13 patrons. I extended an invitation to  Glenn to come fishing with us and that is a no brainier if there is room on the boat. So let's go fishing with our group, invade Alan's home and have some fun.

No biggie Tim, thanks for checking and pursuing this option; maybe a few more will sign up and we can further explore the option, but it will be a great time either way.

I booked a room for Saturday and Sunday, 16th and 17th, in Morro Bay...This went from a fishing trip for myself, to a weekend vacation with the family.

1 trip Dave...Some people are trying to go on Saturday as well & for those that have an extra day and want to try the Surf Fishing I recommend some light tackle (Bass gear). To easily confuse people we are discussing closing the charter to AT members only but that looks to be a little to much money unless we get 20+ people. Please by all means sign up for the April 17 date as we all would love to have you  ;D

I get movie tickets a couple bucks cheaper now since 60 years old, I happily produce my ID, when they think i'm trying to screw them out of the two bucks. Getting ready to have left shoulder replacement surgery and I made the mistake of watching the operation on line. I'm not squeemish but it looked like deboning a chicken wing. All the bone sawing drilling and driving titanium tapperd bars into the marrow of the arm bone. Then sawing the deformed socket off your shoulder to attach a flat plate with screws then attach the  new joint socket to that plat (I hope they use Lock-tite). Finally fitting the titanium ball joint (with a plastic wear surface ball end), in the socket and putting the all the tissue back to the bones with stitches and staples. :'( :-\ :o ???

Long recovery but GTG in 6months to a year?

Yeah, I feel you brother,  I had cervical spine surgery, twice!  Once to fuse c6-7 and once to implant an artificial disc at C5-6,
I get annual injections in both knees, halyuronic acid.  An attempt to stall knee replacement surgery for as long as possible.
And I have been avoiding a dr appointment for my left shoulder now for six months, figure as soon as it falls off Ill go in!
Getting old is not for the faint of heart!

I think I can top you all. 2 artificial hips, one un-repairable hip fracture, permanent spine damage, 70 years. l However, I feel great. I did discover a little known Fish and Game deal and talked my surgeon into signing. I now have a lifetime free California fishing license for the disabled. All you other walking wounded in Cal should look into this!

Bill,

Great news on the Lifetime Free CA Fishing License,

     https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Statistics

Checking the CA Fish & Wildlife website, in 1970, their first year of yearly fee statistics, show $3 for an annual resident fishing license,  I began fishing with my Dad in 1962 at Folsom Lake.  ONLY wonder what a LIFETIME fishing license cost would have been then???  Paying $47 currently, and the cost is only going up.

CA Fishing License Fees from 1970 to 2015 is attached for your pleasure reading.

Funny how it went up more from 80-90 then any other decade. More than tripled. I guess they figured out they had something good. Oh, and that is also about the time Ca emissions equipment priced cars out of the market of most and the greenies decided eating was bad.

Child of the 70's here. I went from hand writing smog certificates at my auto shops for a 25 to 50% emissions reductions on cars to buying 1 $20K smog machine to buying 3 $30k smog machines , to out of business due to bureaucracy and licensing in California...DFG or BAR it all means money $$$...My mini rant.

As a kid in LA on a playground in the 60's I recall great lung pain breathing deep and stinging eyes from the smog. The mountains couldn't be seen except maybe for 20 days a year. In the mid 70's at the top of the 10.000+ft Mt. Baldy you couldn't see 50' through smog.

Moved back to LA in 2008 for 5 years and it's all changed. Blue sky and mountains 300+ days a year. Something worked.

Trip is just around the corner...

Here are some of the jigs I hope to use for the big Ling cod, on two added teaser p-line jigs Alan gave out on the 2015 SOA charter, and a large chrome krocodile on the largest swimbait.

I am going to add a skirt to the 10" grub tail and the scampi, going with blue/purple look. I will post more pics when the two are finished.

Tell Ed there is only 7 spots left & I have a novel idea. 2 large bowls of water and 1 large bowl of food outside and that dog will survive a week at least and you could leave a wayer bowl under a dripping faucet. Hell I can make it a week on that  ;D

I'm in  , wind rain or not.
We went out of Moss Landing two weeks ago, beautiful quiet morning .
Came back in the afternoon ,30 knts indicated, 8-15 about 25 apart.
Fastest we have ever had 'Psalms' going at a pretty steady 9-9.2 knts.
Not bad for a sailboat with 9000 lbs of ballast!

Making the sauce for the lasagana as we speak.

Nice of you to say, Mr. Tim! But I'm really not so delicate as all that. In fact, even though it was almost 40 years ago, I once went cod fishing out of New London, Connecticut in a freezing rain storm that was so bad we had to keep breaking the ice out our guides... and then I drove home almost 80 miles on the New England Thruway which was basically slippery as a skating rink! (Thank goodness I'm not that young and heedless anymore.) But at least I didn't melt.  ;)  :D

Scott, as a matter of fact, I did! I loaded the trunk of my '70 GTO with cod and pollock and brought them back to my aunt in South Norwalk. She was out of her mind with worry because I was driving in that sort of weather, but once I arrived safe and sound the fish helped her get over it.  ;)

Someone's got to keep this fishing economy going!

Fishing is always good!  It's the catching that can be spotty to say the least!

That's right a new Daiwa 20-50 lbs. rod, it's a reel ling killer!

You still have time to decide to drive with Rick & me!  We need someone to clean up Alan's kitchen while were fishing!!!!

Tim and I have discussed how we are going to work the jackpot prizes, being we want to support the AT family, but also want to include the general public on the boat as well, and I would like to hear what you guys think.

I was thinking one reel to be included with the boat jackpot, and the other as a private jackpot to the AT member with the largest fish.

On the other end, I was thinking one reel giveaway for the largest Ling cod and the other reel for the largest rock cod, one person cannot win both, and they do NOT have to be in the "boat's jackpot" to win.

Oh, and I am included in winning the reels...No shame here.

However you guys want to divide the prizes is fine by me...just as long as I win a new reel  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm gonna give away one of my prizes by pulling a name/number out of a hat.....easiest non-biased way I can think of....

I hate to write this but I may be forced to miss the trip.  I have been having some health issues the past month that for some reason seem to be getting worse instead of better.  I am unable to sit for more than a few minutes without experiencing excruciating pain in my hip, and I haven't figured out how to get to the rendezvous standing up?
I'm hoping things will improve by Saturday and I will drive on down.  You'll know I made it when You see me standing in Alan's folks backyard holding a glass of scotch!

just a thought...

The last AT trip I was on last July in San Francisco for salmon there were 6 of us on a 1 day trip.

Of course we all brought enough gear for a 3 day offshore.

The capt laughed and stowed it all below.

If 15 (or 16, 17?) of us AT'ers load up like we like to do... well...

I'm having trouble keeping it a 2 setups... think 3 will keep away the panic attack... maybe 4 :-\

Anybody else have my problem?

I'm only bringing 2 setups....... My 6'6" Tusnami rod for my beefed up 501 with 25# BBG and my 6'6" Shimano rod for my Spheros 8000 with 65# PP.......now tackle is a different story  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'd prefer to have braid on the 501 but Fred was nice enough to spool it up with fresh Berkeley Big Game for me before handing it off to Jonathan who's gonna hand deliver it to me Saturday night at Alan's house...

Don't forget your clamp and lugs for that Tib frame on the 501, PJ.

Best to install the lugs with Marine grease in the holes, and on the threads -- snug everything up -- but don't overdo it -- it is going into aluminum, so just needs to be snug.

Good Luck & Lots of good fellowship and fun for All...

Best Regards,

Fred

Thanks for the breakdown on your gear selection guys.

Packing has always been the tough part of travel for me.

What to bring, what to bring, bring it all!

Hey Tim, is there generally enough rod holders for a full boat?

Jonathan,

I am in Fresno right now -- and not back home until around 10:30 tonight.

If I can just drop off the reel at your house early tomorrow morning, for PJ?

Would your wife be available for me to just quickly drop it off, or?

Thanks for doing this, I kind of volunteered you without asking!

Best,

Fred

Thanks, Jonathan --

Know the feeling -- got home at 10:38 last night -- took out the trash down to the road -- aware of lions at that hour -- then checked the mail -- did a few chores and emails -- hit the hay at midnight.

Up at 5:00 -- coffee, breakfast, started on knocking out some more reel backlog for clients -- down to 14 now, from the 44 stacked up after we returned from Death Valley.  Scheduled to do a 505, 209, 4/0, 6/0, International ll 12T, and two DAM Quicks today.

Then heading down to Fresno for a meeting, and stopping at TSC to look at wood splitters.

We will have at least 30 cords of wood to split before we are done dropping the dead pines killed by beetles.

I used to have a splitter -- but someone stole it in Fresno, the day after I installed new tires and went through the engine.  Guess they were just waiting for me to get it ready for them.

So have been splitting by hand using a maul and wedges -- but cannot do that with 30 cords.

So, long story short (too late, as my wife sez) -- before I leave for Fresno this afternoon -- I will drop off the reel at your house.

Best,

Fred

Glad to hear it sold out. My wife gave me the nod about a month ago and I just sat on it. Go? No go?....Then my fall Alaska trip turned into a June trip just a week ago ( the lodge had a cancellation opening) so.....best to all of you on this trip. David, hoping for a miracle for you.

Please, please, please take and post lots of pics!

I will get my chance at trophy Lings, Yelloweye rockfish, King Salmon and Halibut in less than a dozen weeks.

Still rock climbing, Jeeping, hiking and feeling my age near the end of the week in Moab. One of my adventuresome girls went up, I took the pic from below and then followed. The (unbeknownst to us) falcons nesting in the tower above us did not like our intrusion into their airspace. We scrambled back down. :o :D

Dom,
This cat is super arrogant.
Usually they are very shy but I have seen this big boy twice and both times he just stood his ground and looked at me.
I walk ,she runs on a piece of private land about 200 ac , the first time I saw him he was above the trail about 25 yards from  me just watching.... Started carrying  a big stick on my walks.
However I think the 300 WM would do the job.
Best,
JT

My dog has been fighting liver issues for months and it seems she is losing the fight so I need to be here in case this battle requires a final trip to the vet...... I can not leave my wife to deal with this by herself.....

Hopefully I can get out on a group trip in the fall....

Catch'm up

I am unable to make the drive down so I'm going to reluctantly allow someone else to catch the biggest Ling COD this weekend and I'm going to lay around the house in hopes my health Improves quickly!  This really sucks, I'm fine on my feet, it's sitting that gives me the problem, just driving across town from one jobsite to the other is almost unbearable, no way I could drive 2-1/2 hrs without going crazy from the pain. I want to wish you all Good luck and have a great time take and post lots of pics.
I'll make the next trip.

From the looks of the first few pictures of the trip it appears I missed a great trip but it was wise of me to stay behind....

My wife and I had to put our poor 6 year old dog Maggie down on Friday night.....It was a tough weekend for us both and I'm glad I was home so my wife didn't have to go through that part alone.....

I'll make it up to myself by going on a 1 1/2 or 2 day trip in the fall...

Unfortunately I left the reels at home in Long Beach; either way I was unfortunately not up to hosting prizes during the trip anyway...seasickness.

So there will be a Morro Bay due-over for myself, and will be simplified if we have an all AT group/charter.
