I have been bidding on a 349hc on ebay. The last few reels someone has been running up the bid on me. So the I let them win and pulled out when the bid got beyond the value of the reel. They ate the reel they most likely they didn't want. So I will be ready this time and they can out bid me again. I set the price and that is where it will stay. If they go past they paid to much for it. I can't stand when they do that so from now on this will be standard practise for me.
Mike
Mike,
If there is a reel I want. I wait until the last minute to bid.
If it is going to end when I'm sleeping, I just bid before bed and let the chips fall.
If it is past my comfort zone. No need.
If you don't win. There will be more chances. Just be Patient.
Daron
I have learned to set my comfort zone myself. And it pays off. The guy that went for it bought it. He better have a use for it.
Mike
Yeah, happens a lot. If it was worth more to him / her, so be it. (Wasn't me ;D).
Sometimes if you don't want to wait you have to overpay. I saw a reel I was looking at go to at least $100 over its value. Still haven't figured that out.
Don't get frustrated. The other guy doesn't care.
Nos 349h & hc reels are on ebay at least once a month. They made a ton of these reels. So I can set the bid and wait. No last minute bidding for me anymore. I have it up high enough so no lowball bid here.
Mike
Know what you're willing to pay and don't go a penny over that. There's always another one.
Good luck on that Mike
Someone will snipe me at the last second. They dont want to start a bidding frenzy. If they do they will pay two times its real value. My bid is higher than what I paid for the last two nos 349 I bid on. So they are not getting off cheap. If I could find outer rings for a 349 I would put several together with new parts. No such luck yet. Its like poker you have to pay to see the cards.
Mike
When you see a lot of bids early in the listing it is usually shill bidding done by pawn shop employees or seller's friends. If you see something you really want wait until 10 seconds is left and bid your max.
Yeah - I'm still looking for decent outer rings (without splits) this side of the pond. I've already found the hen's teeth and rocking horse poo ;D ;D
They are pecking away here and there trying to find the top. They dont want to pay to much for it. Well they are going to need a much higher bid to find out. I think it will be a last minute bid from someone. He will have to explain to his wife why he spent so much money on a reel.
Mike
Everyone is different --
Different motives, needs, knowledge levels, incomes, buying and selling experience, and a thousand other variables.
Lots of reels out there to choose from --
If I was looking for a nice 349HC -- I would ask Randy Pauly at Vintage Offshore, on our site -- about what he has.
No drama, no gouging -- just a straight up, fair deal on a properly described reel.
Best,
Fred
A very fair point Fred
A fair point is don't run up a bid on something you don't intend on buying. As far as Randy goes I will problem buy what he has in nos also. Right now I want anything that comes up on Ebay. I also want the bidding to be fair. If you run up a bid make sure your interested in buying it.
In a perfect world, you would be right, Mikey --
Sniping is common in the last 10 seconds, plus there are automatic sniping programs that folks use, they bid up the price in increments just to find out where your bid is -- then withdraw their bids if too high, they have buddies that run up the bidding for them, shill bidders, straw purchasers, and every other scheme that we have never thought of -- because we try to do things the right way...
If there is something I want on eBay -- I look for a BIN that is a new listing and reasonable -- then just buy it.
If selling, I set no reserve -- and start everything at 99 cents with no reserve -- and let it ride.
The definition of an oxymoron, IMO -- is eBay and fairness in the same sentence.
And quite frankly -- this site we belong to that gets around 3,000,000 hits a month -- has also tended to increase prices on certain reels we are interested in.
So, good luck in your search -- but there are plenty of reels -- so whatever you want will come along sooner or later.
Best,
Fred
Ebay is not fair sometimes.
You have to take the good with the bad and don't take it personal.
You say you want anything that comes up on ebay?
That is a pretty bold statement.
Like Fred said, if you are Hell bent to win an auction.
There are sites that bid for you at the last second.
Its pretty cheap to use, but you have to pay in the end.
When I first discovered ebay, I too was frustrated at always losing at the last second. It happens.
You have to beat them at their own game.
If shill bidding is going on, they will get caught, especially when the same item comes up again and again after being won.
Slow and steady wins the race. ;)
Well said Fred... ebay and fairness are oil and water
Daron, I once won an auction at way too high a price (alcohol may have been involved) and checking the bids later it was obvious shills were at work. Contacted Ebay and they cancelled the deal.
It pays to keep your side of the street clean like Fred says.
I'm pulling for you to get a deal Mikey...
That Antares DC you sold me was so sweet and you gave such a great price. Thanks!
I'ts going to Bridgeport with me in a few weeks.
Steve
They are going to outbid me. But it will be someone who wants it more. More power to him. The owner will get a fair price.
Mike
Don't ever bid on 3 antique outboard motors on ebay at 3:00 am. You wake up and discover you won all 3.. shipping was murder.. I did however, get a cool collection of vintage coleman lanterns the same way.. My favorite is a 1969 "sunshine of the night"

Speaking of 3AM bidding, since I recently finally am following many doctor's orders and exhortations to stop drinking etoh; packages are no longer arriving as a complete surprise. I bought these?
Anybody need a vintage Harnell fly rod?
Steve
;D ;D Yeah been there done that :)
You guys crack me up. The last thing I want to do is look on a computer when I'm drinking. Now that I don't drink, all I do is look on the computer, phone or tablet.

When you are drinking all the time when can you look at your computer?
I have a black 349 sitting in a box. Do you want it? I dont know what they are worth and dont need it. The last 349H I gave to Lee.

I never looked at the computer...I cannot discuss what I was doing due to the 12 years old language rule. ;)
I haven't been on e-bay in quite a few years. I never sold on the site, but won/bought a few rods and reels. Like everyone else, I got a couple overpaid items, as well as a couple of steals. I used to watch some sellers who were close to me. I know it is frowned upon, but I could have contacted sellers before auctions ending (but never did). I bought some additional stuff from sellers after agreeing to meet FTF and inquiring what else they might have at that moment.
One of my overpaid deals was a used high end saltwater reel from an out of state tackle shop. It appeared pristine, and was listed as "serviced" and with service/repair records. It was serviced alright, but there was salt build-up on some of the noncritical internal areas. And one of my best deals was a little used custom Calstar 760M trolling rod (I believe part of an estate sale). The auction ended on the night before Thanksgiving (good time to look) and Calstar was misspelled in the listing, but labeled correctly, in script, in the accompanying photos. I was the only bidder and the Reserve was an easily met bid.
Just "Buyer Beware".
I only bid on new old stock reels. There idea of in good condition is one man opinion compared to mine.

What gears do you have in that reel Lee ???
Mike if you want the black 349 i will post a picture here. All in need is about 10 bucks for shipping. Probably less with Regional Rate.
Question... can the higher ratio 349H gear set be installed in a lower ratio 349 single leaver reel?
Cool

This reel has the 349H gear set.
Thanks for the info Lee...
Cool
I was trying to buy nos reels for the side plates and rings. I have tiburon frames and a good supply of parts.
Mike
You do have to be careful with some of these reels. I recently bought a 349 on ebay that was advertised to have a "perfect aluminum spool" and when I got it I found that it was a chrome spool that was painted black. I did get a fast response and refund from ebay.
Ebay doesnt tolerate stuff like that. The seller has to give you a accurate discription of the item.

I've seen listings describing the spool as "chromed brass" when it was actually the more desirable stainless steel. Works both ways!
I had another 349hc today that I was out bid on but he had to pay a good price for it. $152.00 is a good price for a 349. Well they didn't get it for nothing and they can't sell it for much more. With me around bidding the 349h might gain in value. No more 75 dollar reels that are NOS more like 150 dollars if they want one. That's what I am willing to pay.
Mike
I just look at them and drool over my keyboard Mike.
Lee I live alone and make enough money to pay for my addiction within reason. I thew out the blood sucker late last year. Life is so much easier without all that drama going on.
