Title: Sealine 600h project: double dogs and more
Post by: Three se7ens on January 26, 2015, 04:59:02 AM
I've had this 600h for a little while now, and am getting it ready for fishing season. First, a little cleaning and some tlc to go with it. Then I started on adding a second dog, like gstours did.

I cut the dog from some stainless scrap I had laying around.  Rough cut the profile on a bandsaw, then filed it to final size.   The side plate was done on the milling machine. I added some jbweld to the side plate that I'm going to drill and tap, and use to connect the dog spring to.

If there is an interest, I can have a batch of dogs cut on the waterjet.

Next up will be an insert and drag kit. I'll have a prototype in another week or two.

Very nice Adam, it really shows when a pro does it, compared to something I would do ;D

Don't sell yourself short. Your dremel work is second to none. Besides, so many of the things we do to these reels started with you.

It did take 3 tries to get the dog shaped right.

I finished up the side plate. Milled down the jbweld and drilled and tapped it for a #4 screw to hold the spring. Just need to order a spring.

Hi Adam --

I am including a spring that may fit this 600 -- for the additional dog.

Your sideplate is being mailed today -- the spring will be with it.

Thank you again, for the handles.

Best,

Fred

You just cant beat this reels features for the price.  I am honored to have helped pave the way.  I like the way you can install the dogs with the sideplate assembled. the gears are beefy. parts are cheap.  but many a man is too proud to give them a second look.   gst.

Yes you did Gary! ;)
I only have two Daiwa sealines. A 900H and a 600H. I realize their potential. I just can't keep my grubby paws off my Senators long enough to fool with them, but they are on the back burner. ;D

Adam, your work looks super, I hope the fishee,s appreciate enough to jump on the hook!

I have some Diawa 600h  watercut .020"" titanium keyed dragwashers (about a dozen) that  are excess to my needs I would sell for $2.50 each to anybody wanting them for their upgrades.    like 5 for $12.50  thats obtainable!    gst.

Got the prototype done up for the insert and drag kit.  I cant test it until I get the reel painted and back together, but based on my experience with the kits for the penn 113H and 114H, Im expecting well over 50 lbs of max drag, probably more along the lines of 60 lbs.  The real question here though will be what the reel can survive.

Great work Adam,

Will you be adding an Acetel/Delrin washer for under the gear in the kit? Dont forget about extra cf/metal drag kits only for both of your kits (for future replacement parts) please.

Great job Adam. I'm not a diawa fan but when I see that you started the thread I feel that I need to check it out. Your work is above most. These pictures I'll bet don't do it justice. I know this because I received the insert and washers for my 113H and in hand and seeing for myself these are just quality products. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the great pictures of your work.  A couple of years ago this type of thing was out of the question. No its a super good kit that any joe homeowner can install and have a upgraded reel at a low cost.  Keep up the good work.   Having access to those machines is priceless and there is no limit what you can do!    Just use your imagination!!!!!

Progress has been a bit slow lately, but its coming together.  Insert kit is ready for testing, I just need to finish painting the frame.

A few people have asked about the 900H/910, and I have kits for those in the works too, but its going to be a while on those.  Im having qc issues on the inserts, so I wont place a big order until its sorted.

Ill have a few 600H kits available in about a week.  I have all the parts, I just need to fit them and put together the kits.

This is a great thread!

Reading through it again makes me want to buy a 900H for the parts I have.

Thats the problem with this site, it makes me want to buy stuff I don't really need.  Kinda like collecting, it provides enjoyment if if you don't get to use all of your gear.  Clearly we have many fishermen on the site that actually use all their reels.

More cost effective then a 9/0, and a solid reel.  I'd like to see a 900H or one of the larger senators after a year's heavy use catching big fish, just to see what wears.

what are you going to paint with? I have a 400 that could use a little love; same old story, I pay attention to the Penns but i have a few daiwas and they really have strong features.

I would love to find a place that cerakotes. That would really bring the life back into these old daiwas and provide some nice color options.

Cerakote was my initial plan, but its not available in the color I want.  I have an industrial epoxy I use on some of the other parts I make, and Ive been curious how well it would hold up to the abuse of salt water fishing.  So thats my plan now.  Its been hanging on my painting rack in the shop for a few weeks now waiting on paint, but Ive been too tied up with orders and work to do anything with it.

The topic of rounding off the gear sleeve where the handle attaches has come up multiple times, and I think Daiwa already has an excellent solution to this issue, which can be found in the Sealine 910 rockcod special.  The 910 has a longer brass gear sleeve, and a stainless insert(key #60 gear metal cap) with a much larger area for the handle to attach.  The stainless part threads onto the longer gear sleeve, and transmits the force of the handle to the the gear sleeve over a large area.  The 910 gear sleeve is a direct replacement for the 900H and 600H gear sleeves, although the set plate(bridge) is different between the 600h and 900H.  You will need the gear metal cap, handle screw, and the gear sleeve.  If you are buying new, you need to buy the whole set plate, since the gear sleeve isnt available separately.

The 910 gear sleeve is on the left, and the 600H on the right in my pics.

I have handles available for both the 600H/900H gear sleeve, and the 910 gear sleeve.

Thanx for the update Adam,

Since this 910 sleeve is longer; I take it that the handle sits out a little more. Can you tell me how much longer/farther will the handle stick out?

Thanx,

Leo

I missed this thread. Im into it now though. I have been fishing hard (400-500m drops) with a 600h for over 12 months now.The gearing is just right for this and the drags are up to the task.I will be fishing this reel for many years. Also have a 900h. I have upgraded drags on both and was surprised that the max Drag on both 600 and 900 came up almost the same. I think the insert would help the 900h more IMHO

I did, but its not just any paint.  Its a high grade industrial epoxy thats tougher and harder than any powdercoat Ive seen.  I wanted to see how well it holds up relative to cerakote, which my pg545 will be getting.

Its pretty expensive, and not very user friendly.  But the finished product is tough as nails.

Adam, from your private lesson on a PM to me, I'll say its a good product and worth it for a guy like yourself that could manage many projects at once. As for me...no thanks, I'll let you do it if I need one.;D

I had the reel filled with 350 yds of 60 lb mono today, and put it on a rod and did a little bit of testing of the drag.   With the star backed all of the way off, the drag was so light that the weight of the drag scale was enough to pull line.  It ramped up very smoothly and progressively, and was smooth as silk.  I got up to 38 lbs and still had travel left in the star, but I didnt want to risk damage to the rod.  Ill put it on a heavier rod and do a little more testing later in the week, but I expect it to max out above 50 lbs.  It was so smooth at the 15-20 lbs of drag I plan to use with this reel, I cant wait to put some fish in the boat with it.

It's made by Midwest Chemical but is only available to licensed refinishers.  It's not very user friendly either, so it's not a product I'd recommend for the average person.

I'd recommend cerakote for a premium finish.  It goes on thinner, and is much tougher and more durable.  For less money, duracoat is good.  It goes on like regular paint, but is more durable.  Car paint can give a fantastic glossy finish if that's your goal, and it's relatively cheap.

I just wanted to test that epoxy out, cerakote is a better finish, and would normally be my first choice.

Well this thread went the way of a paint job, however,  I have a few questions for Adam regarding his 600H.

First, could you maybe post a pic of your offset arm mounted on your 600H?

Second, the set plate in both of my newly acquired 600H's have  (4) screws/posts. Do you think the double dog set up would work still?

Third, did you actually do the 910 gear sleeve on yours?

Thanks.

Ill have to get back to you with a pic of the offset arm mounted on it. I have it apart at the moment.

Yours has 4 posts with the short screws?  It should work fine, just with the second dog needing the hole enlarged to fit over the post.

I have put a 910 gear sleeve on the 600H set plate, but I dont have that configuration installed on the reel at the moment.  But I will do that when I take a pic of the offset handle installed though.
