I`m trying to do a service on this reel but I have a dilemma.When I opened the handle side plate to check the gears I noticed a spring (part 975041)with a longer end that was just sitting there. Where does the longer end of the spring go?

One end goes into what I call the "kicker arm" the other end is loose. It lays against the side plate to create pressure. Be careful and very patient putting it back together, so it doesn't get caught outside the side plate. You'll have a bit of finagling to get the outside edge of the "kicker arm" inside too. The spring pressure pushes it outward. Sorry I didn't see your post earlier...
