Title: Extending a spool shaft
Post by: JRD on October 03, 2017, 01:18:06 PM
OK so I made a bone head mistake.  I had a penn spool not centering in a jigmaster.  After trying a variety of plate bushings it was still off.  There was a small bump on the end of the spool shafts which I milled off.  Perfectly centered and spins like a top - until you turn the reel with the gear side plate down.  Then the lugs on the spool shafts just kiss the pinion and make a nasty noise.  I've tried,

Taking an old plate and relieving the spot where the bushing screws in
Relieving the bushing a bit
Smaller yoke Springs
Lighter yoke Springs
Milling a hair off the pinion
Smoothing the lugs on the spool shafts

Nothing works.  I'm thinking about putting a coffee stir stick on the spool shafts and lengthening the shafts with JB weld.  It's cheap enough I could tear it down for a parts reel but I screwed it up and feel compelled to fix it now.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Randy, how about not turning the reel gear side down?  Just kidding!

I have had this problem recently and Kyle Yogi suggested putting a thin Delrin button inside the bushing to push the spool to the left.

I've used little snips off of a beer or soda aluminum can.           Rudy

You won't do better than a Delrin , that's also what Carl Newell used for his fast cast bushings.

I tried the soda can, worked perfectly, thank you Rudy.

Trust me Randy that thought came to mind after 5 failed attempts 😀

Sal where are you getting delrin that thin if I may ask.

They're leftovers from stamping washers. I usually use therse:

and These:

They vary in thickness, they're usually 0.022" Thick
My spacers don't sit on the shaft, I place them at the bottom of the bearing cup or bushings.
If anything thinner would be needed on my reels, I could probably make adjustments without shims.
