Title: Xcaliber Marine rods - anyone ever use these?
Post by: Nasty Wendy on April 08, 2016, 03:02:05 AM
Here are a few quick shots of my new rod I got off of eBay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-STRAIGHT-AND-BENT-BUTT-TROLLING-ROD-BIG-GAME-ROD-80-130LB-/162020443312?hash=item25b92bc4b0:g:OqwAAOSw7FRWUSKL (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-STRAIGHT-AND-BENT-BUTT-TROLLING-ROD-BIG-GAME-ROD-80-130LB-/162020443312?hash=item25b92bc4b0:g:OqwAAOSw7FRWUSKL)

I haven't been able to get any feedback on these so I pulled the trigger and I'm going to find out for myself.  Being on a budget sucks but if this works then I'll be fishing with them 'on a budget'.  LOL.

Clay,
Those look a lot like a rod called a profile. I was chasing one a while back, but it went out of my price range.
Probably an import, but if it works, it works. Just make sure those roller guides are lubed and free.

Yeah man if it works it works.  The rollers spin freely.  Is there anything special I should lube them with? ....3 in 1 oil?

Thanks.  Reel X will be added to the WD40 shelf in the garage.

Well supposedly the Xcalibers are made in Boca Raton Florida.  So it may be the same rod marketed under a different name or a partnership split up.  ???  ???

There is a difference in the wrap design under the guides.  I don't know if that means much but it is different.

I was just taking a shot in the dark. When I first saw it, it reminded me of a profile.

Pinnacle Marine rods are great. That's all I use and 6 years on one set (6) with never a problem.

His name is John Volmer on The Hull Truth forum.

Can anyone confirm or refute this? I searched and can't find their location, but I live in Boca Raton, FL, so I'm interested....

I think I let my fingers type faster than my brain was thinking.  They are supposedly custom built rods and I am ASSUMING that the seller is the builder and he shipped from Boca Raton Florida.  After thinking that through it is very possible they aren't built in Boca Raton but things do line up for that to be true also.  I'll dig the box out and get the address and you can do some sleuth work if you like.  :)

Thanks Clay. If there is a plant in town that builds rods I want to go see it.... I've built a few myself.....

OK I went fishing this past weekend.  We did alright.

The Xcaliber Marine rod worked great.  I don't know how explain its performance trolling other than saying it performed exactly as expected.  I did some deep dropping with it as well using an electric reel.  For a 80-130 sized rod it picked up every bite.  There was never a question of "Was that or wasn't that a bite" it showed definite traits of a fish bite with the tip movement.  That surprised me.  I was expecting to have to watch the rod tip like a freaking hawk to pick up the bite due to the size of the rod.  I'll be mounting my new Fin-Nor Santiago 30W on a 60-100 Xcaliber Marine rod as well.  I give them two thumbs up.
