Here is my second time building one of these yellow little reels. As the guts from a penn 113h interchange it gives us a lot more options. Stainless parts are now fairly available. A very good reel in a small package.
The steel factory penn gear is used in a Keta insert again. By using my own custom cut hex cf washers I was able to get 6 again in the insert as posted with the earlier "ugly duckling 🐥 narrow penn posted.
The .025 titanium washers are very strong. See what you think 🤔. Here's the reel and my "ugly roller tip rod". Testing the final load. I,m 😀 pleased with these inserts. I would like a couple more if they were to surface somewhere. This is a good option if you're wanting more drag and can DIY. Thanks.
The drag seemed very smooth throughout the pullout testing. I tried to burn it in a little to seat things first by using my power line winder and making the cranking wear in the gears and disks burden down to reality first.
This is the second static lead test, yes fifty pounds. That's more than I will ever need or try on a fish of course butt it's a max test. Star was tight. I don't like the factory ⭐️ star it came with and would give it to anybody who pays the postage. Now I need to build a Sal Star, before I can go fishing 🎣.
Good luck hanging onto that Gary :D
Love that testing set up Gary! 8)
That's a beautiful machine Gary!

Thanks and yes it's better than hoped for in a project. Every thing I've learnt basically has come from this forum. Thanks to all . 😍. 🌅. I'm planning on a fishing test soon. With pictures, 😏
The drag star ⭐️ was spoken for, so that worked. And for anybody's information the spectra removed from a Tiagra12 reel is the same capacity as the YTS as it filled it fine.
Here is another good option for a quality wax( sticky) for coating the bottom of the spool and sides. 👍. It can be used for tapping and grinding metal parts. Great for keeping the grinding disks from plugging. And on rotary burrs- very easy to use. Available at a welding supply store. Just saying.
Here's the picture of the product. First picture did not send? 🤦♀️ This is a good product. Only drawback is it's industrial size. Maybe split one tube with some other fishing buddies? 👋
These are the titanium keyed washers that are used in the insert. The insert is worth doing if you can find one. Adams insert kit is the best for the average person and very high quality for the price.👍
what plates and frame are those? :o
I believe this is a Pro Gear 454..
Thanks 🙏 yes the reel project is a 454 👋. It of course is using penn 113h gear, bridge, yoke, jack plate, etc guts.
The frame and spool are pg 454 YTS. The insert is from Keta and was a gift from Sal as was the gear sleeve, dogs, and delrin washers. This is a very good small reel, with great horse power.🤓
Here is the prototype used last year. Ive got it in the house for a tear down and inspection. It was fished hard last year for Halibut mostly.
I will post some pictures as progress and changes are made. Fiss Honn! :D

Another approach to an insert is shown below. I made this a couple of years ago and it works well. It's another home made solution. It's just a piece of the past. Lee cut the washers of some sheet titanium and the rest is my homework. Notice 8cf washers. The insert is tig tacked on top of the steel gear. Very strong.
Notice also the overall length of the modified hex gear. The Pro Gear seems to have more room in the gearside end plate. Butt I'm not exactly sure as it was too tall (rubbed) in a couple of other test reels I tried.
It can be always shortened butt I wanted to see what would happen?
This thing was experimental every thing seemed to work.
Gary, is that hex insert made out of a wrench socket?
The cf washers were hexagonal and easier than the eared ones that some of us used to use in yesterday year.
Alex, yes, it's shown below. Certainly strong. It's a lot of work. Butt, thanks to the folks that went here before me, you can order the equivalent on line as this stuff becomes available.
Adams drag kits are very good. This predates those by a couple of years.
The tall good looking guy shown at the start of this post didn't know what he had holding in his hands.🙈
The drag gear was tested all last summer, and seemed very smooth and strong.
I would not do this again but you never know. Thanks 🙏 to all the folks again for helping us get to where we are going. Big fin is waiting 🧜♀️
The YTS is a great little reel. Very affordable if you're a diy person.🙋♂️

Gary! You make me blush!
I had to default on the ProGear reel ONLY because Dominick was all over the TANK like a chicken on a June Bug!!!
And now that you know me, like a 7 year old, I ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS, and appreicate you answering all of mine re: the ProGear I fished with for 3 days.
When is salmon season starting????
Wayne
Thanks for only blushing Wayne, you only played back fiddle because Dommie could not buy a bite, n, I had to keep an old Italian kinda sober. So I drummed up a good fish. The Tank proved its worth. I am glad to have been there in a great part of reel testing. Thanks to both of you.
I think we released about 3 halibut over 200+ pounds. Was it fun?🤦♀️
N I remember something about you kinda hogging the Tank when we had to walk the rod around the boat 🚣♀️, chime in this could be fun. Thanks again to all of my friends and let's go fishing 🎣 again.⚓️
After disassembly and inspection everything seemed fine so it was relubed and retested for drag capability.
It is amazing to see what you can do nowadays in a small package.
The drag system can hold 49# and maybe a little more. As not wanting to break anything , I was satisfied that I'm ready for the new year of flattys.
This reel has a clicker and my drag package. The sister to this first one has a hex insert shown earlier and no clicker. That's about the only differences in the pair.🧜♀️🧜♂️
wow Gary, thats really impresive, 49# stopping powa
Stopping or slowing a good fish is usually on my mind and a fun part of fishing. Then hoping your knot was tied right🎣
After fishing these reels a little they're similar to the penn 113h YTS versions. Shown below is a j variance frame/spool that's a very solid tank. The spool width is 1.70 inches and weighs 33.4 ounces.
This frame is in between the Accurate and the tiberon frame for weight and material removal. The color is not much. Butt?🤦♀️
The 454 pg is a little narrower in the spool and frame and has slightly less line capacity. It's spool width is 1.45 inches and weighs 32.7 ounces. The pg 454 is .35 inch less in width and the diameter appears to be the same. Just saying.
Other wise these are similar reels, one you have to make from after market parts and the other can be bought used as is and modified.
The pg 454 comes with and without the clicker option. These are great little reels in my opinion.💁♂️
Oh my, I forgot to add the pg 454 has a one pc frame and left side plate. While the 113narrow typical screws are used. It's a design thing, I'm not going there "which is better" 🤔.
Hang on. maxes the rod. ;)

Well, the 454 is a better reel,
BUT only when accompanied with Penn custom parts ;) ;D

That really is a wine blush Gary, you didn't have anything to do with it. Yes we did release some big ones. Was it fun? I have to say it was one of my memorable fishing trips. I also enjoyed your good humor and wry jokes. You kept us laughing for a week. I trust that Mary Jo enjoyed the trip also. She was most hospitable and good company over dinner. Her cooking is some of the best home cooking I have tried. I especially liked the wild strawberries you picked from the back 40. Like Wayne I am wanting a Salmon adventure, if the AFG ever gets their act together. Are they still predicting June 1, for an opening? Ours opens June 17th, although down in David Halls area they are already killing them. Dominick
Thanks for the reply. I'm in no way saying nor implying one of these narrows is better than the other......
I just play inside them and test them as much as possible. I,m getting more great reels than can be fished so some have to wait. Just wish I could fish more 🐠
Dominick your making me blush again 🌷
The chance to have Sals Tank on my boat is always welcome 🙏. Thanks again Sal for your help, research, goodys and kindness. I'm here because of you and others.👍
