I've Hardly ever been stunned when it comes to the price of quality when it comes to my fishing stuff or what others have paid for theirs. But this lure....So what did you say it cost....& your throwing it where.

but... it's a Roman!
I'd rather have a new Avet... or a Phoenix... or a Fathom... or just about anything. ::)
And all that for a 10-lb fish?? :D
~A~
For $400 I could get another Phenix/Fathom combo. But if it would guarantee a bunch of 10# LMB I might spring for it. My biggest LMB is 6.5# and a few bucket list fish would be nice.
Did you notice he said he buys Izorline because it's cheap. $400.00 lure and he uses cheap line. ::) Dominick
My lures are made from off cut PVC, some used stainless wire and lead I've had for 20 years. Without hooks and rings they don't cost more then US 40c each and they catch plenty. The PVC and the wire comes mostly for free, the latter I get from used electric fencing. ;D ;D
OH, I forgot, some get a bit of spray paint from an aerosol can!

could you post a pic of those PVD lures?
sunds like a nice project
Sure, first going fishing this morning.
You will be very disappointed, they are made to catch fish and are not pretty to catch anglers.....LOL
Some of the bass guys out here are serious as a heart attack and would gladly plunk down $400 if they thought it would give them an edge. A lot of big bass here that primarily eat planted trout. Alan Cole made giant trout plugs by hand and they went for serious money (well not $400) back in the day and a lot of trophys were caught on them. Lake casitas is by me, someone pulled a 20+ LMB out of there several years ago. To each his own I guess
The local Delta tackle shop next to me in Oakley gets in Japanese made $200+++ realistic balanced tuned plugs and they fly off the shelf.
Not my cup of tea.
Steve
I have a problem paying $5 for a Rooster Tail or Panther Marten.
Usually buy them in bulk when needed -- on sale -- and coupons.
That is just me I guess...
A tool for everything...
Best,
Fred
These plugs we use for mainly Yellowtail, but any game fish will take them. You need to wind them fast so they skip over the water making much splashing and commotion on the surface. These have been used that's why they are a bit bashed and paint does not hold on the PVC.
When you first said PVC, I was thinking PVC pipe, which didn't seem right. Where do you get your PVC blanks? Is this their intended use?
Thanks.

Yes I agree! ....Jeff
I'm speechless, $400.00 for one lure? Only seriously top tier LMB tournement fisherman would buy these.
That and 75 mph boats.
Be worth $400 if say, I's able to get about 40-10 lb'ers before I lost it. Mabey realistically, 20-5+lb'ers. My own theory in a-lota fishin situations is, if I don't lose a lure occasionally, I'm probably not gonna get bit as often as I should. The places that guy casts to(or so he says) either he can retrieve his snags, or he's gettin a windfall outta the sale a these lures.

I use the word PVC in a very generic sense and "plastic" would have been more correct as I would use any similar looking plastic material. They differ slightly in weight and some types are more difficult to machine.
I buy it or sometimes just pick it up from places that make things or suppliers that cut it to size for use in advertising signage. It is also used extensively on boats and boat trailers as protection against damage to boat when loading or unloading. It also get used on boat gunwales.
I usually buy pieces of 2cm thick sheets and cut it to size on a circular saw and plane the rest.
PVC pipe will work as well, I've done it but was more difficult to make and it broke easily.
I have this 29" Rapala hanging in my Garage.
It was a $100 lure. It is fully functioning.
My Son always tells me to bring it and tow it behind the kayak. Not!

Hey Daron that lure could be used to make bait for your kind of fishing. ::) Dominick

I just noticed that he's in Cape Town, South Africa . . .
Anyone know of any USA sources for the type of plastic he's using ?

Dave,
I'm not sure if it's the same stuff or not,(sure looks like it tho), but I believe it is HDPE plastic.
Had to use it to make a custom cutting board once. Comes in different thickness's...I'm no good at adding links, but it was something like www.professionalplastics.com
Might be of help ???
Brett
Edit....gets a little pricey when you get the 1-1/2" - 2" thickness's
Out of all the forums Ive spent time at I have to say I love watching how the threads progress here more than any others Ive been to. For me, among many other things it's a big part of why I enjoy coming here....Jeff

This is a local place where I have obtained some of the plastic and looking at their website I guess this is what it is; quote
"Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS is one of the most widely used plastics."
http://www.maizey.co.za/product/abs/
The stuff is not expensive, I once bought some but can't really remember how much it was, maybe $9-00 for about 80 X 40 X 2 cm off cut piece.
2cm is the thickest you would normally want to use and cutting a baton 2 X 2 X 2 cm is a good starting point.
You need to have some idea of what you wish to achieve with the lure to decide the dimensions and weight. How rough is the water expected to be? How fast do you wish to wind the lure? You want it to skip around a lot on the surface? Do you want it to track in a straight line?
Again for a starting point, the ones in the photo above weigh between 2 oz and 3.5 oz and are roughly 1.6 X 1.6 cm and 13 cm long.
For what it's worth... high density polyethylene (HDPE) and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE) have a specific gravity of about 0.93. It's slightly buoyant but the weight of the hooks and wire might be enough to sink it. ABS is slightly denser with specific gravity about 1.02 making it about neutrally buoyant in seawater. PVC is much denser with a specific gravity of 1.4 so it will sink quickly. Of course, they can all be made to either float or sink by adding either air pockets or lead.

I'm too cheap too even spend the $20 on a lucky craft lure. Having one of those $400 lures snap off while casting would ruin an entire fishing trip.
I took a .70 cent Chinese jerk bait fishing in the bay earlier this year and it consistently got bit for an hour before it filled with water and stopped working. I bet if I gave that lure an epoxy coating before taking it out it would have held its own with many of the pricier lures on the market.

And it would appear this particular lure has reeled in quite a few!
