Hey Guys,
Need photos of your rod storage solutions that you've come-up with? BTW, when posting please let me know if you have more rods than reels or more reels than rods and why?
Thanx,
Leo
Hey you guys purposefully ignoring me or is this post someplace else ???
Leo
Dude, relax. If many are like me, they may not see all of the new postings. My rods are wall leaners and my reels are in the plastic drawers on rollers. Nothing fancy and it works.
Im relaxed Bryan see :) . Just thought I would see if anyone noticed.
Thank you very much for your suggestions,
Leo
Couple of old pics. Quick Photobucket search...
I use the Okuma Rod Racks from Turners outdoors. I look for them on sale $10 to $15 each..
They can wall mount or free stand (like I use them)...

A quick google search shows that they are available at most Sporting good Stores. Okuma & Walmart...
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Okuma-Expandable-ABS-Wall-Mount-Fishing-Rod-Rack/9721456
I use them as you see, Double and together free standing.
They can be used flat against the wall for 8 rods or 16 rods attached to wall??
Or separate (2 ~ 8 rod, sides to each one)...
Even saw a Video of one guy who used 8 rod for Fishing rods and second half for 8 Brooms/Mops etc in garage....
I also look for them on Sale for $10 to $15...
Dont need any right now, Have actually gotten rid of about 20 rods and 15+ reels I just didnt need ~ Most donated.....
Almost all of that Terminal tackle you see from Closet is gone also!!!!!
Sometimes Less is more.. !!!
I can actually find what Im looking for now.. LOL :-)
.
all of mine are piled up on top of each other in a corner of the garage....... :-\
Looks like I won't be doing any fishing when I finally decide to stop over and say hello :-\ , I'll be busy building you a custom rod rack ;D.
Bad example boss! But then again, you might have something there...life's too short.
I though you were building a reel case Sal?
I used 2 inch pvc pipe and eye bolts to attach them above my garage door. I used two pvc pipes about 7 feet apart and hung them where they would clear the garage door when it was opened. Mine or about 6 feet wide and used two sets one on each side of the electric door opener device. Each set will hold about 12 rods. The eye bolts are attached to a large s hook that is screwed into the ceiling floor joists.
About equal number of rods and reels. Freshwater rods in a vertical rack, fly rods in their tubes and saltwater in a 4-inch PVC pipe. If I fished the big pond more, I'd have the salt rods in a rack, too. :-\
For marital bliss I have found that fishing stuff is best kept tidy. Hey I have the best wife in the world but everything has its limits. Striped reels on the dinning table and lures on the lounge floor can only be left for so long. So the big expensive rigs go in a locked cabinet with heavy duty sliding bases so you can get the ones at the back out without scratching the front ones and the small expensive ones are on home made racks. It is interesting how all the rigs once fit in the cabinets and now the (there is no way I will fill those racks) are now full with stuff now leaning in the corners. I'm sure I am not the only one with this expansion problem, am I. I have the same # of rods as reels doesn't everyone?
Locknut, you really went to work creating "custom cabinetry" for your rods. Those drawer slide's for your trolling reel holder's are "the bee's knee's" (keeping it family friendly).
All of your comments/idea's are why I enjoy this site. You guys get my mind/imigination into "professional over-run" all the time (as-if I need assistance with that). What a great idea "Mr. Locknut": "custom closet/room cabinetry for fishing equipment". Locknut you may have started a whole new section on the fourm with pdf files of drawings/schematics (you CAD guys), more photos, and "pimped-out" area's of the man-cave's.
As an old childhood friend/surgeon would say: "aint nut'n but sumt'n to do".
Thanx again all,
Leo
Nice work Jeremy, thanks for sharing.
Those Duels are really something - are there six in there?
Cheers, Justin
Well spotted Justin a heap of saved up pocket money though a couple of the 6/0s came off trade me.

More reels than rods (I think)
That's a real man cave 8) .
Nice setup. I'll probably do my garage this way. BTW is this your man cave , the garage, or both. ;)

Mancave aka spare bedroom. I don't keep any tackle I care about in the garage. Too hot (TX) and not secure

Foolish me. :-[ I should know better. If I'd looked more carefully I would have noticed little details that you don't normally see in a garage. ;D

DayOne,
Nice man cave. What are you using to suspend your rods from the cealing?

10' 1x4 with 20 2" holes for the butts. and 10' 1x2 with large cup hooks for the tips. I took some 1x4's about 18' long and routed a groove down the middle of the 4' side to accept the 1x4' and 1x2's. I screwed and glued them on. I used 3 on each 10' section. I then drilled holes in the 18" sections for molly screws or screws into the rafter. I put 4 holes in each section, but didn't use all of them. To recap, I have 3 18" sections of 1x4 screwed and glued perpendicular to the 10' boards. These 18" sections lay flat on the ceiling and are screwed to it. Clear as mud??
Im having my rods in this wall rod hanger, really nice, simple and decorative, even wife approved it
some have guns to show I have fishing rods to show when you take the hall to the guess bathroom
the only problem is the "teeth" size, on my big 12.6" surf rod the bottom section dont fit on the hanger teeth as well as my rail rod, other than that all my other rods are there

my reels are storage on individual clothe bags inside that cabinet on the picture
Each section holds 32 rods --
There are possibly about 400 here -- and they stay accessible.

Fred

There are no known degrees of perceived more or less "nutness" with wives.
She will just consider me really nuts --
And unfortunately -- you will still be nuts.
God Bless all of the women who put up with us...
Best,
Fred
Like Fred, I prefer vertical storage.
Here is a storage cube and a rack that I had designed a while back. I like the cubes, as they can easily be moved, and can even be angled horizontally to allow the rack to be carried through doors or tight places. If you don't store your reels on the rods, you can fit a bunch of rods in a very small space. The inshore/freshwater model holds 18 rods, the offshore model holds 15.
The tall skinny rack is something I whipped up to store fly rods in a closet. The whole rack can be easily moved in/out of the closet, and the dividers are adjustable.
The downside is that when you see all your rods in one place, it is more difficult to convince yourself that you need more :-).

Thanks Fred.
Just glue. I sometimes shoot a few nails too if I run out of clamps. I can't take any credit for the workmanship. All cut out on a CNC router.

Same here! Good craftsmanship Dave, this would work nicely.
Sal
Nice idea. Cut out a few sets for sale, they would go quick. Of course shipping would kill the plan probably. Pretty heavy eh?
Not many of us have access to a CNC router.
I know this is a older post so I'll show a older pic of a solution I came up with. This piece will only hold 20 or 21 rods but it leaves some storage for other things. I took this pic out in the sun before I moved the whole thing into the garage. Of course some of the reels and rods have changed and a few have been added. For me when I get over 20 or so setups its time to either sell some off, hand them down, donate or just retire some. My reels are not stored like this I just wanted to show what 10 reels looked like on the top shelve.

so, then how do you normally are storing your reels?
When not fishing my reels have reel covers on and are placed inside a heavy duty zippered bag for storage.
thanks buddy
It would be nice to store the reels separate, but with everything else involved with loading up a boat for an offshore trip, that just isn't practical for me. Trolling or bottom fishing, we are going to have between 10 and 12 rods. No way I am going put that many reels on rods, tie on snap swivels, etc the day before.

Since I fish a couple days or more a week my reels stay on the rods and after a good washing after each trip they hang on the garage wall horizontally and this allows all water that may have gotten the reels to drain out near the harness lugs. This has worked well for a very long time.

So you are saying lugs down then? Seems like a good idea to me.

I fully understand about the time needed and such, this is a normal days worth of rods and reels for me in Baja. There is also 3-4 larger setups that cant be seen in the pic because their stored on the inside of the boat under the side rails with a gaff or two more. Not every setup is broken down after every trip, this boat stays in Baja but my home gear which some of it was shown in the first pic gets broken down after every trip. But, I normally only take 4-5 setups on trips 3 days and under so there is not a lot of work in breaking down , loosing drags and setting them again for my next trip. On day or over night trips I mostly bring 3-4 setups. Again not a lot of work when I only fish 3-4 times a month in season back home home in So Cal.

I spent the weekend tackling storage solutions by building out my garage attic, and building a simple rod storage rack.
I covered my entire garage attic in 3/4" plywood on top of 2×4 stringers to avoid the plumming & electrical. I cut an access hole, framed and mounted a drop down ladeer, and wired in switched led lights.
I was going to build hanging rod/reel storage on the ceiling, above the garage door, but decided to take a simplier approach and just use an existing storage rack, and build a 3 tier hanging rack. This takes up less space, and seems easier to store the heavy 130 reels. I also mounted/wired 7 led lights.
Now I need to get all my fishing, boating, reel servicing, rod building equiptment and supplies organized. This should give me back my garage/workshop benches and space.
I spent $1000 total on materials and supplies and it took around 10 hours of work.
Just thought I'd share.
John
wait i missed something- last I recall the pic you had of work station was crowded desk in an apt :)
