I hope anyone can help me. The line guide of my 965 will result in a very asymmetric line lay: See picture...
What is the reason for that? And what can be done?
1) Add a shim washer between bearing 55 and the clip 67?
2) Or is this more of a worm location issue?

I honestly do not see where shimming anything would result in a different lay of yor line .
Couple of things come to mind after looking at you picture .
1. was this particular line lay done with pressure on the spool as in a fish on ?
2. Check to insure the level wind is Not Binding as it hits the ends on each side before it reverses direction .
3. Tie the line to a fence or Tree or drop in Deep water ,Whatever it takes to empty the spool and start over to see how it fills the spool back and make sure you don't have some tape or something on those places on each side of the empty spool causing the line to bulge up (I know that sounds odd but still without knowing the condition of what the line is spooling on you have to start somewhere

From the photo, it is clear that your spool is protruding too much from the right, so the line is bunching up there. You need to align it so it is more centered. Not familiar with this reel, but many reels (like Ambassadeurs) have adjustment knobs for this purpose.

Good Eye Nelz ,that Most likely is the problem.
I can't really see much difference in the angle of that pic on my screen
How about posting a better straight on picture of the Reel .
Here is a Schematic from Mikes that does show Shims in both ends of the sideplates so I NOW SEE HOW SHIMS MIGHT affect line lay .

I would agree the spool needs to go to the right some more .
Also watch how you start putting line on the empty spool that the line lever travel is not doubling back to soon
Check the manual adjustments that could align the spool. Inspect for burrs in the worm gear or a worn pawl. The gradual stacking of the line on the right in the photo is a clue.
It is notable that the spool seems off-center in the frame.
Also, look at the lower fill of line on the far left side of the spool. The gap on the left almost equals the spool reveal on the right. To me that means the line guide can't reach the far left side of the spool. At some point that edge of the stack will rise and line will fall into the gap and cause more performance issues.
Looks like a spool issue to me, but I would still eliminate the simple outside mechanical possibilities before going inside.

Yes, this is what I had seen before as well. And I had also suspected that this is the reason for the asymmetrical line lay.

There is an spool tension cap (part no. 26B) on the gear side. But this part is mainly for adjusting the tension on the spool axle, as the name suggests. The positioning of the spool is probably more of a secondary, subordinate effect.
Since I had bought the reel via eBay and had not yet disassembled it into the smallest individual parts, I have now made up for this. My hope was that maybe the metal thrust washer (part no. 40C) in the left side plate was missing. But my hope was disappointed. The washer was present.
So I suspect I have a reel with poor manufacturing tolerance. I was looking for a thin washer that would fit into the hole for part 40C and could be added. 40C has the measures: diameter = 5.15 mm; thickness = 0.8 mm (copper?).
I found a thin washer (0.3 mm) with a diameter of 5 mm. The washer has a drill hole in its center, but that doesn't matter. It's made from simple magnetic steel, but that doesn't matter, too; salt water shouldn't come near to it.
I mountedt this washer between plate and 40C and reassembled the reel with this arragement; first result: Now the spool is shifted a little bit too far to the (right) gear side plate.
I am on the right track. Tomorrow I will grind down the additional washer (aim: 0.2 mm), and try again. Then I will take off the line and refill the reel with the line again. I will report on the success, hopefully!
You may want to see if the Bearing is seated all the way on the side with the problem.

Yes, after looking at the schematic, it seems you'll need to add a shim on the left side and loosen the "spool tension cap" to allow the spool to shift to the right.
I would look at 40c and 42l for the solution !!!
I did it!
Before grinding down the additional washer, I tested the effect of thickness = 0.3 mm. I took of the line and refilled the spool again: See picture "1_LineLay_0.3mm". Now the spool is shifted a little bit to far to the gear side. And the line lay is inverted; not as strong as the original state without the additional washer (see above 1st post).
So, my work began. BTW: grinding down such a small washer with standard means (sand-paper, file, fingers & ellbow grease) is a hard job. Lastly I achieved a thicknes of 0.25 mm and tested this.
Picture "2_AllParts" shows all related parts; on the left the new washer, grinded down.
Picture "3_WasherLocation" shows this washer arranged in the drill hole for the thrust washer.
Picture "4_ThrustWasher" shows the thrust washer 40C arranged on top of the new washer.
Picture "5_Bearing&Retainer" shows the mounted bearing fixed with the retainer ring. Fortunately, the retaining ring could still be mounted in the indentation recess. There was enough space for it.
I took off the line again and refilled it. See the result in picture "6_LineLay_0.25mm". Now I am happy with the result and can prepare for fishing.
Maybe my actions in this matter will one day help someone who has similar problems?
