I have an SX reel I use occasionally. Probably occasionally because I have an awful time getting backlashes. I have 30 lb mono and greased rather than oiled the spool bearings. Helped some, but significant challenges remain. Cast a Penn squall and Daiwa SL20 SH with ease. I can't afford to get one of the newer reels with magnetic controls. Any ideas or do I just need more practice. Thanks
Practice and used soft mono line without memory. I find it helps if I put my thumb on the edge of the spool instead of the line on the spool. Also, make sure the line is packed every on the spool without a hump in the middle or one side. Humps will make the spool spin erratically when cast.

Make your own mag brake.

yeah, it took me a really long time to get the hang of it, but it really is just practice. if you can cast the other reels, you can cast this one. :-\
