A horizontal drop line. ;D ;D Rudy
I'm guessing a squid jig. For really big squid!

Unfortunately, I have no idea about the size of this item. It could be almost any size. I like your thoughts about it being used to catch Squid.

Maybe that's a green light stick in the center for attracting and catching big Humbolt squid.

rigs for filter-feeders (Asian Carp) look similar, though not as robust
something to catch an angler?

no, it's definitely something legit & well-made
for a scenario where it's more effective to have many hooks
around the bait,
rather than 1 or 2 hooks
IN the bait
Guys used to jig lobsters with a device consisting of numerous large treble hooks. I can't remember if I ever saw any caught with it.
This thing will tangle lobsters or maybe octopus. ;D

Ingenious crab catcher. Bait in the cage and when crab comes to feed, you lift the catcher and hopefully the hooks will snag the legs. Should also work for lobster and octopus.
