I hear ya Tom...photobucket drives me mad...slower than molasses! Have you tried just using the "additional options" feature here. It uploads pics direct from your files...no annoying hosts to deal with. It does make doing a tutorial kinda tough...as it allows only four pics per post. BTW...the plates are going to be a hit! 8)

All I did was right click your facebook picture "copy image address, or save image location" then clicked the insert image option here(to the left of the planet) and pasted between the img blocks. It works in IM too.
Tom will these fit accurate frames? Any ideas for colors so far? I'll definitely need a silver but maybe a black to go with your 9/0 frames you did a few years ago. ;)
Thanks, they look great!
Dom
Makin me wish I hadda need for a 9/0. Any future plans for 6/0 plates?

Hello Mike,
These prototype plates currently have the standard single dog cut out, right hand and left hand like stock plates.
I did have Daron cut me samples of his double dog mods on all the big boy plates ;)
Tom
I'm quite excited about these plates making it to production!
Tom do you see offering a full 9/0 build kit with frame and plates or is it going to be offered in pieces?
I'd love for a Cortez conversion 9/0 to be my next build!
just got done telling Lou my collecting days are done and the Tom goes and releases this not fair so ill modify my collecting statement. im done after i get a 9/0 via tom

Let's talk colors....
Silver and black for sure to match my frames, red? ice blue? I'm not going to make a lot of these, so i kinda want to keep the number of colors down.
What do you all think??
Tom
Ice blue for sure. Would love a set in your green also.
Any color goes good with the frames you sell. Ice blue will go good with silver or black.
I'm leaning towards silver!
That dark cobalt blue you used on the 146 kits would be cool but the black frame works with anything for me. I'll go with the herd on this one. Thanks for doing it
Ice, Ice Baby. ;)
Cobalt would be nice too.
Either one will work.
Tom are you anodizing the frames as well to match the plates?
I would love to get a green set and maybe red.

How are these coming along? Just checking
I knew I saved that 9/0 frame and upgrades for a reason, black to go with the frame will be nice.
Will these fit your Dom Tom frame? Maybe I missed this question about fitment ? If so ,black and sliver would good.
Ice blue for me. One set for sure, possibly a second.
Yes, these plates will fit all Accurate, old style Tib and my Cortez Conversions frames. I'll probably do a few colors, so keep the conversation going, I'm undecided at the moment.
Tom
green, blue, silver. I'll take one of each :)

Sal, I'm digging the homage to the old school Penn handles with the "striping", shape, and counter balance. Try a Rosewood like their old "door knob", "log", and "coffee grinders."
I will say you spoiled me with that first one in the back because that is seriously the cats PJ's!
Keep up the innovative work, pals,
Dom

We must be thinking the same way, eventually that is the plan.
I was going to try acrylic and stabilized wood, the blank is crazy expensive but the look is out of this world...we'll see.
I cut many shapes, to me the original Penn knobs are the best looking out of the bunch.

You're on a roll with the timber grips Sal - love the classic design with a bit more grip to fill the hand, are you using the small metal lathe you bought a few years back?
No doubt you have already considered it, but I like Broadway Dom's suggestion of a coffee grinder grip in a close grained timber for one of your bigger spinners.

Thanks Mike! no I'm not using that mini lathe anymore, I got rid of it last year, it was just too small for my needs.
I'm using a nice wood turning lathe that could be converted to a metal lathe as well, by adding a few parts.

I kept it simple, Silver, Black, and Ice Blue.
Tom, I'll take one silver & one ice blue. Rudy
I'll be having the same, silver and ice blue.
Tom\please change my previous request from one red one black to one black one silver
any thoughts on price ??
Hello All,
I got the 9/0 plates back from the anodizer and they look sharp! I did make one change... instead of Ice Blue, I went with a Teal color that I think looks great. Since these are such a small batch, I decided to experiment with a new color. I've been using this approach with the last few projects with limited success.
Silver, Black, and Teal will be available after the new year. I ran out of time making eccentric levers for these plates as well as harness lugs. It's time to hang it up for the year and enjoy family and friends!
See you all next year, and as always, thanks for the business!
Bula Tom & Merry Christmas to all !
Can I raise my hand for a set of those gorgeous teal plates please?
Vinaka!
Best regards to all!
Looking good! Put your feet up. Happy Holidays!
** I'd like a set in teal too**
OK then Tom, 1 set in silver & I'll try out 1 set in teal. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Rudy

I tallied up the build, and the out the door price is $163 a set. International will be a bit higher.... The kit includes the following:
Left and right Plate.
Delrin eccentric sleeve.
Color matched aluminum eccentric lever.
ABEC-5 SST bearings.
Stainless steel bearing cup.
Clicker assembly, click spring and hardware.
Stainless steel plate screws(Penn).
Stainless steel bridge screws(Penn).
I'll be back in the shop Saturday packing the kits.
Since this is a limited run, I'm going to use this thread as an order sheet. Those whom have already laid claim to a set will have priority. I'll be Pming folks Friday/Saturday. If there is anything left by next week, I'll list them on my website for the general public. Thanks for hanging in there waiting for these kits, I think you'll all be happy with them!
Tom
im still in for one set in black.

Daron and I discussed it and they should be stock. I don't double dog my reels so I will defer to those that do. I did remove as much material as possible to allow the second dog room to swing.

Yes, in theory they should take the left hand conversion. I've never seen it done, but I patterned them from the stock plates that do.
And yes, the plates are cut with as much room as possible for a second dog. I had Shark Hunter cut all the big Senators for me as patterns.
I personally don't do much double dogging, so that part will be up to you guys and gals.
Tom
I had a extra dog and it will work great just needs a custom dog spring. The dogs will be alternating.

Tom, PM sent.
There are already pictures Sal posted awhile ago. You need to search for the post. Tom made the slot for the spring and removed the material so all we need to do is make a spring.
Mike
Mike, yes I have a few pics, but those are with a stock plate.
Looking at your pic, I think there might be a better more effective way of setting that spring in, not that there is anything wrong with the way you're showing yours.
I won't be able to check until I receive my set, it is still on the way here.
I did not have much to do with this one, someone else was involved with the layout for customizing the double dog.
Let's keep in mind, Tom is doing all of us a favor, he did not have to do this for us.

Mike, I presume you included the last sentence because in the photo the dogs will be alternating and we're not sure how it'll work with 2 more teeth on the sleeve ratchet gear? Maybe I shouldn't presume, but I'm not sure it'll still be alternating. Have we a rule, something like, "If it alternates with an even number of teeth it'll alternate with all numbers that are even"? I don't have enough gear sleeves to experiment, and although I bet someone could prove it mathematically, I'm not going to spend a lot of my time trying. My hunch is that this is true.

With 8 teeth there will be a tooth every 45*, with 10 teeth there will be a tooth every 36*. Therefore the length of one of the dogs would have to be altered to maintain alternating dogs when switching a sleeve with a different number of teeth. Rudy
Rudy, I think that's an oversimplification of the problem. When you add two more teeth you change the way both dogs contact the teeth, not just one. And they should both be affected to the same degree, no? With more teeth they'll travel a litter farther from the axis of rotation, but still maintain contact with each tooth to the same degree (not the same degree as before, that changes - each of the dogs contacts as much of each of the opposite teeth - I'm trying to say it's symmetrical). I think that as long as the dogs pivot the same distance from the axis of rotation the simultaneous (or alternating, take your pick) actuation of the dogs should be maintained. This is probably the wrong place to have this discussion and I'll try to find time to make it a thread of its own later.
Sid, if you look at the photos you will see that the piviot for the dogs is not 180* apart which throws a wrench into the monkey works. :D :D

That throws a wrench into the monkey works the way you were trying to solve the problem (which was part of the oversimplification, too). I think in my explanation the pivots don't have to be 180* apart, they just have to be the same distance from the axis of rotation, and the dogs have to be the same length.
Have you ever looked at the double dog 113h bridges from Black Pearl? He sells it with a 10 tooth sleeve which gives alternating dogs. By switching to a 8 tooth sleeve it becomes simaltanious dogs with the same dogs.
Is that spring going to stay put?

There are already pictures Sal posted awhile ago. You need to search for the post. Tom made the slot for the spring and removed the material so all we need to do is make a spring.

Well, that sure blows my theory out of the water..... I'll have to find that picture, that may help me understand what was wrong with the way I'm thinking about this.

Sal
Sal I just stuck it in as a example. I will change it when i get another spring. It wont stay in place the way it is. As for ten teeth I wont know if it will change until I try one.
Mike
No Mike, I wasn't talking about the spring, I meant there might be another position for that spring. But, from taking another look at your pic, it might now work, I will need to check when I get my set.
Thanks Mike.

Those dogs are not the same length, and the pivots are not the same distance from the axis of rotation.... these are not the conditions I was speaking of.

Sid, check here, the very first Senator with double dogs that was ever made. Most have forgotten about it ...the rest of the double dog upgrades just followed from this one:

There are lots of pics on dogs and springs, some even have mixed dogs, as one for the 9/0 and the other for the 6/0.
Keep in mind, this was done a long time ago, I now shape the dog at the tip and at its side to keep it closer to the ratchet for a better contact.
Sal
The spring would work that way if there was a small bend on the end of it

Sal
Thanks, Sal, but looking at those pictures I just saw different variations of dogs with the same sleeve. I think the easiest way to solve this is for Mike to report back and show pics with the 10-tooth sleeve and we can see if the dogs remain alternating..... in the end I think that'll either prove or disprove my point.....
That's what I was trying to show you Sid. Rudy mentioned it already, it really doesn't matter on the gear ratchet, yes it would help and might even get lucky by changing from 8 tooth-9 tooth, or 10 tooth. The fact is that you'll be able to make it as you would want it by trimming one dog or both, in some cases even longer dog when fine tuning.
Your theory is also correct if you're trying to make one part kit, but there are different variations.
That would be the part that I leave to you, maybe Tom, or Doc. I do things by actual test, no math🙂

Yes that is what I am planning on doing making a bend at the end. I just ordered a few dog springs to see if they are long enough.
I just received my set, Tom they look amazing.
The only way the new dog spring would work is the way Mike was showing it. I believe Tom did his homework on this one, it will work to perfection, with no alterations to the plate. The spring need to be a little stiffer that the stock spring though.

Not an easy color to match, but I think I got it

Very nice Tom,
Thank you!
Sal
great color match Sal you nailed it.
Great match, Sal, are you going to use a silver frame?
Nailed it! Stunning!

Very nice Tom,
Thank you!
Sal
Looks great Sal, matches well with the plates. Looks easy for the 2nd dog, thanks for the picture. Need to scrounge something for a spring.
Thanks guys, but Tom deserves all the credit here. Everything he has been offering has been spot on.

Yes Darin, I have a black on blue frame and a silver will go on this one.

The blue torpedo handle will eventually get remade, that was made a while ago and I think it could be a little large.
Sal
That's gonna look sweet, Sal! I have the teal plates and going to use a black
frame because I have the black tiburon handle/knob, wish I had a black star too.
Black will also look good. ;)
Yessir, I love all of Tom's products, the fit n finish is spectacular!
Sal, I'm pairing the red knob you sent me with the black 9/0 plates that I should be getting in a few days. Pics coming soon.
Finally got a chance to assemble the latest plates I got from Tom

Stunning, Sal! and Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday Sal! That is one heck of a reel and that handle fits her beautifully.
Nice job, pal.
Dom
Thanks guys!
Dom, make sure Jack spoils you today...Happy Father's Day!
Sal

Happy birthday Sal, stunning reel.
Mike.
U.K.
I thank you guys for the birthday wishes, but my birthday was a couple of weeks ago ;D.
I'm getting really close of being a senior citizen ::)
Sal
Sal, I think you are past the senior citizen threshold. It usually starts at 55. ;D Welcome to the club.
Happy birthday,,,,,,,, :D that reel is fantastic,,,,,,, ;D
Sweet looking reel, Sal, you knocked it out of the park on this one!!!
I have just assembled my 9/0 with tom's side plates and frame and have used an older bushing 9/0 as my donor reel, however there is excessive play with the spool, about 1/8" so too much to take out with adjusting the bearing and packers. Looking at Mystic parts I see there are two 9/0 spools, mine is chrome and marked 29-115 and I see the newer one are black aluminum 29L-115.
Do I need a different spool for this build to work?
Thanks Peter
Yes Peter, you need the spool for the later ball bearing model. Rudy
Thanks Rudy, I will look for a new donor real?
Peter
It will be easier to just buy a new or used spool from ebay. The chrome ball bearing model will work also but the weight savings with an aluminum spool is tremendous. I've used the spool from the China model H2 with no problem. It's also cheaper then the H model (both available at Mystic).
Thanks Rudy, I have looked at the .mysticparts.com site and only see 1 spool listed for the older and new 9/0
29L-115
1182514 29L-115 Spool, Aluminum (Black)
This looks like what I need to finish my build.
Thanks Peter
