The following Penn reels use main gear part no. 5-60 and 5-149:
Penn 60
Penn 65
Penn 85
Penn 99
Penn 100
Penn 110
Penn 140
Penn 145
Penn 146
Penn 149
Penn 150
Penn 200
Penn 250
Penn 259
Penn 285
I have created a 5 stack for Penn reels that uses Penn's 5-60 main gears. The list of reels are noted above. Most of these reels have a drag capacity of 6-9 pounds. This should increase your drag to a comfortable 10-15 pounds of drag, theoretically. I haven't had a chance to line my Penn 259 to test out the drag system, but is should work very similarly to my other Ultimate Upgrade Drag Kits.
The kits come with 5 in gear Carbontex drag washers, 1 Carbontex undergear drag washer, 3 metal keyed washers, 2 metal eared washers, and a new belleville. Due to the different reel sideplate spacings, if the belleville does not fit within the sideplate, I recommend installng it between the spacer and the star for a more gradual increase in drag pressure.
Cost of the set is $27 shipped within the USA. Will ship internationally based on international postage fees.
Pictures will be posted shortly.
Please post your questions.
Thank you for your interest.

Really cool Bryan, I think your drag estimates are probably a bit low. These drags will give the same drag at the gear as a 113 with a 5 stack, and mine produces way more than 10 pounds. In fact, I don't see why the 99,110 and 250 wouldn't give the same drag as a 500 with your 5+1 stack. Probably more because of the lower gear ratio. A 250 with this drag and a long crank arm would be quite the crane for bottom fishing.

I will let you know, I have a 250N (501 frame) I'm going to use for mid depth lingcod and am considering one on a Tiburon 99 frame. These washers will also fit a 113, a 7+1 113N "Grouper Special" sounds interesting for mid depth halibut.

I think I can even make a 9-stack for that gear ;D
Set one set aside for me.
A nine stack, I might have to try that out as well. I have a Penn 3/0, it uses the 66 gear and the 85 spool. A nine stack on a reel that size would be interesing for shallow big fish jigging like the garbage pile at Neah Bay or many other areas in the straights.
Ron
Max is 8 which would not work. 7 stack in the 113 is the max.
Still, a seven stack is an awful lot of drag. Definatly a SS gear and dog proposition I'd say. If a jigmaster will mess up a gear sleeve end at 12 pounds or so, I couldn't thing that a larger diameter reel at 20+ wouldn't just twist the handle off or destroy the brass dog.
Ron
Bryan,
Can you bring three of these sets with you tonite?
I'd like to try them in my Squidders.
Tom
Brian
I need three of these. Can you PayPal me an invoice ?
Thanks
Tom
Wow... Opens up a whole new world for those little reels.
When you increase a stack from 3 to 5 it makes a huge difference.
I would like two (2). Where and when do I send the check ( do not do Pay Pal ) . Thanks Bryan... Greg.
If we change to a 5-1 in a Squidder, what replacement carbon washers will it need in the future? Is it the standard with thinner metal washers or are they speciazed thickness C/F washers?
The CFs are thin and the SS is thin. Changes in the future require thin CFs. I have used mine over a year and I fish 3 days a week most weeks and they are holding up well.
As Newell Nut indicated, I have had thin metal washer cut for this application. I also use thin Carbontex washers from SmoothDrag.
Bryan,
Does the 5-60 main gear kits fit the 5-149 main gear?
Thanks,
Yep!
nice
Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. Have a great day.
Hi Guys,
I no longer have this drag kit. It took me over 2 years to sell 50 kits. I'm contemplating on making more kits but sales was really slow. Do you think I should make more kits?
Thanks,
Bryan

These kits will become hugely popular when Alan C. rolls out his new squidder gears. Thats if he doesnt do the dura drag type drag system he is doing on the jigmaster gears. I vote for at least doing the metals, as I find a lot of use for them.
Wow, did I get the last two?
Do I need to start an auction, lol.?
My squidder just when up in value 8) But was hoping to get another set :(
Marc..
A valuable kit, those are good to have.
Bryan, I was about to ask you for a set, so would definitely take one.
Mike
Thanks guys.
I'll put in an order...maybe it was my lack of marketing...
Bryan,
As per our conversation the other day,I'll take two sets.
Thanks,
Frank
If it helps I'll put in a pre-order of two more sets.
I have (9) different Jigmasters though so who knows what the future holds. :D
Bryan, I PM'd you(it's a whopper :o) as I'm going to try and breath a little life back into some old reels I have sitting idle. Those drags look like what I wish I had 20 years ago.
I should be restocked in 2 weeks. Thank you for your patience.
Just noticed in my earlier post I was rambling on about the jigmaster kits when this is about squidder/surfmaster.
Sorry. But now that I'm on the right page, I'll commit to (3) kits of the 5 stack for Squids.
Thanks Bryan.

No Bryan, I did not. My Paypal email address has not been updated since we switched carriers. If you give me a total for the jigmaster kits and (4) of the 60 5 stack kits and your email address, I will send payment.
Thanks, Ted
I'd like to purchase 2 of your kits for a Squidder.
Do you still have any of the kits

Drag kits may be purchased at Mystic Parts. Please click on the link https://www.mysticparts.com/CustomParts/UltimateUpgrades/UU-PENN100.aspx
Thank you.
Hello Bryan. I purchased one of the 5+1 drag kits from Mystic parts for a 285. I greased the washers with Cals reel and drag grease. I installed them on the reel. At 9 pounds of drag, the drag is not smooth. Did I do something wrong or did I just happen to get a kit that is not up to par?
I even tried greater drag pressures trying to get the drag to break in. Unfortunately there was no difference.
Hi Eddie,
If you didn't squeeze out all of the drag grease, try this.
Set the drag at 1# then pull the line against the drag and reel about 10 times, 1 yard or so each pull.
Then 3# and repeat what you did at 1#
Then 5# then repeat what you did at 1#
Then try your drags at higher pressure.
Another place to look is the hub of the gear and the gear sleeve. If that is worn and grooved, it'll affect how your drags will work.
Let me know the outcome.
Ok. I'll try it. I can't go to tight on the drag because I'm using a brass gear sleeve. I don't go heavy on the grease as a light film should be sufficient. I'll play with it and take it apart if I can't get it to smooth out and inspect it. Thank you. I'll let you know how it works out.

Did you use the new under gear washer with the kit? If not, you may want to inspect the under gear washer...it may be shot. I've seen many of the old red discs split and crack on old 285s. 8)

If the drag washers are not fully coated with grease or completely dry the drag could be jumpy.
Hello Bryan. I followed your instructions. I set the drag at 1 lb., 3 lbs., 5 lbs., 7 lbs, 9 lbs., and 11 lbs. and at each setting stripped off about 20 ft. of line. Set it at 9 lbs and it still was kind of jerky. I opened the reel up and took the stack out and wiped the grease off. I inspected the gear sleeve and noticed that some polishing was starting to appear at the hub, no groove was present. I regreased the drag stack with Cal's drag and reel grease. Placed the drag stack in the gear, put the spacer sleeve on and then the star. I tightened the star down and wiped the grease off. Took the star and spacer sleeve off and put the bridge assembly back in place and buttoned it all up. It is better, but still a little jerky. I'll fish it between 7 and 8 lbs. At 7 lbs it is smooth at 8 lbs it starts catching. I'll fish it and be happy with it. I don't want to fish this reel at any higher drag pressures anyway. I plan on using this reel kayak fishing.
Let me know how it goes.
I will let you know how it works out. Thank you for taking the time to address the issue. I remembered last night that since I overfilled the spool with an extra 60 to 80 yards of line that the more line there is, the tighter the drag has to be tightened. So, I guess it is better to fish it at 7 lbs of drag anyway because as the spool loses line, the tighter the drag gets.
Once again, thank you.
Glad to help and thank you for your support.
Tightline. Can't wait to hear the fishing report.
Hello Bryan, apparently the drag stack needed to break in. The drag is now performing smoothly. Thank you for a wonderful product. I will purchase more. Tightlines.
