Title: Long Beach 66
Post by: Newell Nut on November 20, 2014, 03:47:03 AM
I am still the Newell Nut but I have bought a lot of Long Beach 60s and 65s for the party boat that I fish and I have seen a lot of big amberjacks caught with them but I have also bought a couple of 66s and those are some very impressive reels. I just received one in mint condition and cleaned out the old grease and found steel gears and a 5 stack drag. Same OD as the 65 but two extras. Also has two extra body bars and larger diameter. At 25 oz it is not a bad reel to hold all day but it could use a nicer handle.

The reason that I brought it up here is that I do not recall seeing much about them on the forum and they are really nice reels.

put a carbontex drag underneath the main gear and five #6-60 drag washers inside and you should be able to get 12 pounds of drag.  that would be the maximum that i would want to fish that reel.  10 pounds and straight 30 pound test would be my preference.

Those reels are built beefy with 3 frame posts on each side. The 66, 67, and 68 all have the triple frame post setup

I went to a floating lodge in Canada and they had penn 67 on all their halibut rods, and they get big halibut with them. Not sure if other boats had it rigged the same, but our guide had the line sidewashed around the first post for extra drag was my guess, not sure if that was accomplished, but they did get plenty of 100+ pound halibut at that resort.

The 6 posts do help to minimize frame and stand twist.

If there was a Tib frame and clamp for these reels -- they would be nearly bulletproof.

The 68 is a little more prone to twisting because of the extra width.

Good reels.

Best,

Fred

Years ago at Norms Landing in San Pedro The Rockcod rent reels were 66's, and mostly 68's. The regular tackle rent reels were 25's. In the winter I would sit in the office and service/ repair reel after reel. They were to light for the usage. Lately I bought a couple of nice 60's on ebay. After replacing the drags washers with some from Dawn, and adding handles from Alan they are getting a lot of use. They are up to the task. I got them to avoid my Makairas from going swimming. Some of the people that go on my boat have little experience. The 2.5:1 ratio is great for moving Grouper away from bad things. The 60's have 60 lb. PE on them, and the drags are pounded down. The next thing these reels will get is re-spooled with 80. The hard part with 80 is breaking it off the bottom. It is rare when a AJ comes along to heat up the drag so they have turned out to be ideal. So for $25+ less than $50 in new parts they are a barging. Try to find a $75, 2.5:1 reel on the market today, well you might do a little looking. Restored cars are for driving, and restored reels are for catching fish.
Glad to see someone using the over looked 60 series reels.

A 66 is a slow YTS. A lot of us have put the spool and faster gears in a black sided Senator with an aluminum frame and called it the Grouper Special. In all honesty the open top Long Beach is probably a better reel for most people than the stock black sided Senator. If you want to increase the rigidity of the 66 you can get a Newell stand for a 112H Senator for it. The only thing the 66 is missing is an aluminum spool.

If that reel has 5 drag disks I'd put a SS gear sleeve in it.

Ron,  You can do a little dremeling on the gear and get a 5 stack in there.  It doesn't take that long.  The hard part is making the CF of course.

I've put lots of 5 stacks in 66 gears. You use the 60 CF and I've never modified a main gear. I've only done it to steel gears with an SS sleeve, 5 disks is a lot of drag. If you need more, Bryan can give you thin SS washers to make a 7 stack. I have a 111 that will someday get a seven stack and an 85 aluminum spool. That will be a shallow water halibut killer for sure.

5 CFs stacked perfect in my 66 and it already had 5 factory disc in it so no need to dremel. I am not going to use the reel for anything heavy but it is nice to know that the reel can handle a lot of heavy work. I have all of my Newells for heavy work but still like to tinker with other things. I am just very impressed with this simple reel and the solid feel of it and the fact that it is like new. Just got a pair of 309s from Wisconsin that have not seen salt water and they sure are pretty. Building a rod for a nurse that does not like thumbing line and I already sold her one 309 that she likes that is on another rod that I built for her.

I will pick up one those SS sleeves when they show up just to tinker with this thing a little.

60's are still cheep and work well for many of our needs, especially when upgraded.   I wouldn't feel under gunned for shallow water Pacific halibut.

I haven't tried, but I'm hoping the 112H bars will fit 2 of the bars. I don't currently have a 112H Newell kit as I usually go after the Tuna Special, but I will pick one up someday to give it a shot.

Ron,
I recently acquired a 112H Accurate frame and looked at it next to a 60 Long Beach. The holes don't line up. I think the two bars will fit, but that's it.
One on either side. The spacing is different.
Title: Re: Long Beach 66
Post by: Ron Jones on November 27, 2014, 06:49:23 AM
I'm sure the Accurate frame won't work, the diameter is totally off. But a Newell kit is multi piece. If you say that the holes line up then your helping me out.

Long beach has been one of my favorite reels since I was a youngster.

I took it apart to fix the lever and the dog was stuck on the side of the spool. They just laid the eccentric spring as you see it. I can picture someone taking this apart, " Lets just throw the parts back in and see if it works!" The only part missing is that tiny 99 dog spring that I don't have! ::) Ugh!
I need to order a bucket of these. The up side, it looks brand new. ;D

Great Deal there Daron. I noticed the gear looks brass. Wonder which years were what. The last mint one that I got had a steel gear. Early longbeach 60s and 65s have steel gears. Usually found in the models with the clicker spring riveted to the side. Every one that I have seen with the clicker spring bolted to the side plate is a brass gear which is the newer version.

Since I'm getting into these Long Beaches now, I bought a parts reel. It has the lighthouse scene and figured I would need parts down the line.
The two right side plates use different dogs. A spring on the newer, a brass spring on the older. Dammit!
The older reel's drag washers look like undergear fiber? It does however have a deep steel gear.
This is what I came up with. Dremel a spot for the spring and ss dog. ;)
I laid out the three stack from the brass gear, but this gear is so deep, I fit a full 5 stack in there with 6-60's and stock washers. The old gear had a short spacer and the fiber washer like I see on a 9/0.
Something old something new.
As Sal says, Gorgeous! ;)
These pics are out of order, trying to fix the photobucket bomb. >:(

Nice job there Daron. That side plate must a be a really old one. The side plate on mine is smooth. We saw the pics of the shark caught at the beach with a 209 so just think what the possibilities are for the 66 which is a lot tougher built.

All this talk about long beaches made me dig into the reel pile I have in the garage. Got a bunch of reels in a big box from a yard sale been going through them. I knew I had one but never had any reason to fix her up.

The reel was pretty gummy. Started with a Cleaning

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/jdanchise/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_082216_zps142b884c.jpg) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jdanchise/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_082216_zps142b884c.jpg.html)

Decided to shine the side plates up a little.

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/jdanchise/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_163028_zps089b4896.jpg) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jdanchise/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_163028_zps089b4896.jpg.html)

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/jdanchise/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_163821_zpsa3575324.jpg) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jdanchise/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_163821_zpsa3575324.jpg.html)

The Drag stack was the old plastic washers. A new set of HT-100s to replace it.

(http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/jdanchise/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_165049_zps1bfb891d.jpg) (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/jdanchise/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141214_165049_zps1bfb891d.jpg.html)

The stack was way to high. I measured out the orignial washers were .70mm and the 6-60 HT-100 with the fiberglass core are 1.20mm ???
So I had one 6-60 HT-100 with out the fiberglass core measured at .80mm and then I cut 2 more washers from a .55mm sheet I Had. Perfect now.

Last A delrin washer swapped for the under gear washer and SS dog to finish it up.

Will any of the Newell bars fit the Long Beach 66?  If so, then four of the posts could be replaced with them.

It's possible but you  will have to drill and tap a couple of holes. I know for a fact that the 113H Senator II bars will work in a 67 by drilling and tapping two holes in each bar (one on either side). This leaves the bottom post intact. A very easy job with a small drill press from Harbor freight.  A 113 aluminum spool also fits a 67.

All this talk about long beaches made me dig into the reel pile I have in the garage. Got a bunch of reels in a big box from a yard sale been going through them. I knew I had one but never had any reason to fix her up.

This reel is definietley not as beefy as the 66 but its a cool little reel.
It could be ;D

Those are my favorites also Sal. The etched side plate long beach reels are from the mid 30's to early 50's and when you find one in nice condition it's almost a sin to go use it or do any modifications to the original parts. I see yours still has the original bearing with no part number, which tells me it is factory original. Definitely a keeper.

Thanks Ted! No, no dremel to this baby. The stand also has no numbers and no taper. This reel appears to be new, I don't believe it was ever uses.

Hello Sal, I'd guess your reel would be about 1941 or newer. The one before had the same scene but without all the raised letters. Nice find.

Yes, I'm also guessing mid 40's. I believe the spool isn't original, the last one I had a while back came with a plastic black spool. everything else seems to be original.

I wonder how penn made those scenes on the plates back in the day? You think they were done by hand?

Back then the only why would be to engrave them into the mold by hand   Doug

So are all the pre-war long beach reels generically stamped "long beach" ??? I never knew about the raised letters. I have a couple that I believe are early 40's and the head plate logo just says "long Beach", no size, Hershey clicker and one has rod clamp that wasn't an option till early 40's. Then I see a mid 40's long beach and the size is stamped into the logo. I always assumed the size stamping started right after the war ended, when the factory started making reels again. Of course that is all conjecture from years of messing with those reels. Much thicker metal on the handle arm and star adjuster are a dead giveaway of a pre war long beach. After the war those metal parts were noticeably thinner with un-polished edges.

This is how I like to find them. ;) Almost New, no corrosion, stainless spool and all that is needed is some fresh grease and Cal's.
Its a 67 and its in great shape. Just one upgrade, a stainless sleeve. This little reel is a Beast!
All I had to do was scrounge up a clamp. I think it was a good investment for $30.

Long Beach 67 with picture plate. The handle is a little wobbly, but I think this is a great find. ;)
One of the posts had a screw broken off in it. A 113H post is a perfect replacement. ;)
Just needs a good cleaning. I have a party to go to, or I would do it now! ;D

A friend from Philly gave me an old LongBeach 66, haven't taken it apart yet but it looks like it was never opened. The left side plate has a chip in it so I would like to find an engraved plate, Im guessing I can use a plate from a 60,65 and 68?

Hi fishit2 --

Needs to be a 27-66  --  66,67,68 reel -- these are the right diameter and hole pattern.

The 60s & 65s have 4 posts instead of the 6 needed, and a smaller diameter plate.

Best,

Fred
