I have almost always taken new reels apart and completely serviced them.  I really like Avet, but I like seeing what's inside.  I feel pleased to see grease under the reel between the reel seat and other improvements.  Yes, I grease the drag.  By that I mean apply the grease and remove as much as possible NOT glop it on with a "more is better philosophy".
