Title: welcome, justin!
Post by: alantani on November 28, 2015, 02:27:28 AM
i spoke with the justin at truth reels a while back and had a great talk.  i'm probably jumping the gun a little, but i am hoping that this will work out in a positive way.  it's a small company and they make all their own stuff.  we will try a separate board for a while and see how it goes.  if there is enough interest, we will leave it.  if this section goes quiet for a long time, i'll move all the posts over to the "other" category.

anyway, justin, welcome!!!!  feel free to include links to your site, prices, specials, sales, or anything else.  and we love photos.  post away!   alan

I'm not familiar with these though I've heard them mentioned a few times.

I hope we see some pics posted up.

Welcome Justin! I have a LEFTY SG and love it!

I know you all are a small company and R&D is expensive... but what are the chances of a narrow reel built modeled on the SG frame with a star drag? 300yrds of 50lb braid, 20-30lbs of drag, LEFT and right hand retrieve, SS internals.... for around $200?

There are no reels on the market that fit this bill except maybe the new Diawa's, but they are way too expensive. I think it would be a very popular reel for bottom fishing and for the kayak crowd.

Justin -- Is there any chance you'll begin including a schematic with your reels and perhaps a brief guide for self service? And maybe even do away with the loctite on the handle screw?

Hello all!

First off I want to thank you Alan for giving us this opportunity to show off out reels on your site!

I'm extremely busy here at Truth, but I will try my best to stay current on questions here on the Forum.

If you can't seem to break through to me here, then shoot me an email! Justin@truthreels.com

That is on our list of reels to be made, but I don't think it'll be anytime within the next year.

We are currently working on the Schematics. I'll have to talk to Wes (Founder, owner, operator, designer, marketing, R&D, and occasional janitor)

We have plans to do away with the loctite handle screw. Its a much better method, but it'll only be on the next generation reels.

I've enjoyed following Truth (was Release) for the past couple years.  Sort of Local to our Mid-Atlantic region.  Wes seems to be a stand-up guy!  Really looking forward to putting my hands on the LGN you guys just finished, hopefully you'll put some low gearing in it for us deep dropping folks in the North East  ;D

Redfish12 - Check out the SS it is the star drag but a little wider than the SG I believe, thing is a work of art.

Hey guys,

Here is a teaser shot of the LG Narrow. It has all the same specs as the LG except it only weighs ~19oz and the capacity is about 500yds of  50# braid.

LGN will be $350

I just used it for the first time this weekend! I caught a 35" striper and this 44" slob.

We are working up a plan to post up each of the reel models along with assembly and machining procedure pictures. We have a lot going on, but we want to do it right!

Hey Justin, do your LG and LGN reels cast as well as the SGs do?

That's a good question! I haven't casted the LGN yet, but it should cast great because it has the same ceramic bearings as the rest and the spool is nearly as light as the SG spool. The LG has slow start up inertia because the weight of the spool, but it still doesn't do bad!

As far as casting goes, I believe the official recommendation is that the Surf goes nicest with 3 - 16 oz. playloads. Is that still the case? Since most anglers will use the Surf to place sinkers and bait at long range, this makes perfect sense.  However, a gent on another board who uses his Surf at the Cape Cod Canal reports that he has no problem casting  large plugs, down to a Super Strike needlefish of 1.5 oz.

I imagine that we'd all reach for a spinning reel for casting a Bomber, or any light/low density payload, but it's nice to know that the reel's perfectly competent as a heavy plug caster too.  And the company's conservative recommendation for casting weights speaks well of their integrity, too.

The SM reel does very well with a variety of sizes now because we recently changed the intensity of the magnet. It still has a bit of resistance with the magnet backed all the way off, but the average caster won't be able cast it at that point anyway. I've only had a few requests of a smaller magnet since we changed the magnet to the larger one and those are requested from experienced/picky/tuner/tournament type surf casting guys.

I have had several guys say they think that it is a great plugging reel. That was actually a bit of a surprise to us actually because we didn't expect it to cast so well with smaller baits giving the size and weight of the spool/reel. Id fumble all over the place trying to work a plug with that reel though. I don't know how anyone can wind line on level while working a plug...I don't have that kind of talent.

Hey Dave,

The original magnets were 1/4" long and 3/16" in diameter
The current ones are 1/4" long 1/4" in diameter

If you shoot Russell and email and request a couple of the smaller magnets, we'll throw them in the box no charge. Russell@truthreels.com

The SM has been really popular and we are a bit behind on production, so hang in there!

How does the SG do casting? Is it possible to mag it?

It casts extremely well. Static mag works great in it. 2 or 3   1/8" thick 1/4" round rare earth magnets fit nicely in the main case.

Thank you for the response. I'm looking at picking one up for both King rigging on piers and casting from piers and beach for big reds. Don't need to cast really far. I'm not great at casting conventionals yet so I need all the help I can get lol.
