Title: Old Conolon Needs Help
Post by: Balvar24 on April 27, 2020, 01:24:14 AM
I've got one of the old blue (cheap) Conolons that I'd like to try and rehab.  It's rough, so I figure it would be a good one to start on.

How do I go about stripping the finish?  What will I find unerneath?  Tobacco blank?

Tobacco blank?
Yes, probably so.  You may be able to look under the butt cap and tell for sure.

I start with nothing but a pocket knife.  Angle it like a scraper, not a knife.  The clear coat and blue paint should come off in shavings and then flakes.  Don't scrape into the fiberglass.  Sand paper can catch any white smudges that the knife missed.

Those old blue Two-Star Conolons aren't bad rods,  Little short on the number of guides, but you could change that if you wanted.
