Title: new handle grips for 2013
Post by: alantani on May 23, 2013, 04:32:15 PM
i've had the old style grips for 6 years. a change was long overdue.  i finally found a machine shop that could give me a handle grip with a continuous curve.  it is a little more expensive, but i am going to keep the prices the same for now.  to give you an idea of what they look like, here is a photo of the old grips and the new ones.  left to right, the old style 6/0 grip, then the new style 5/0 grip, then then new style 3/0 grip, and then the old style 2/0 grip.  the old hot-dog style 4/0 grip is not shown.  it's taken some doing, but i am really happy with the new design.  there is absolutely no difference in the function of the new grips.  they work just the same.  it's just that i like the look of the new grip so much more. i will post some photos of the available arms later.

so it's $27 for the 3/0 grip and $33 for the 5/0 grip, then figure $3 shipping for each.  thanks!  alan

What! No hot dogs?  :D   I'll forgive you for not having it in the picture. I don't know if I'll need many more, but I use the 4/0-size the most. I like the rounded shape of the new grips though.

the 3/0 grip is closer in size to the old 4/0.  i decided to go with only two sizes of grip from now on.

I had to go see Alan a couple of weeks ago and he showed me the new handles.  They are a cut above the old models.  Not only do they look better but they feel better in your hand.  I don't need any right now but I will order some in the future.  Dominick

going after big fish?  get the 5/0.  some more reasonable?  try the 3/0.  personally, i put the larger grips on all of my reels, but i'm optimistic!

G'day Alan,

Like the look of the new grips, will probably be up for some soon. Does this mean though that you no longer do the spinning reel grip with the smaller OD shaft?

Just a point that you may consider with your grips in the future, don't know if it has been mentioned here or not before. I had trouble gripping the shaft without marking it in order to tighten the grip onto the reel. Any chance the new version could have some small flats machined on the shaft so a small spanner could be used to stop it rotating while trying to tighten? I know this would add to the cost but I reckon would be worthwhile.

Cheers

Jason

Spinner grips are still available, but we currently have limited quantities.

Feel a bit stupid now, I should have thought about putting an allen key in each end of the grip to tighten it.

i don't use loctite, i just tighten it as tight as possible. but if you prefer to use some type of glue, i highly recommend tamiya (for RC use). used it when i was into radio controlled. tested and proven on off-road buggies (rc of course). tight lines!

I use the blue Loctite, as I have had some problems with some aftermarket knobs coming un buttoned in the heat of battle , not a good feeling  :'(  The blue Loctite is easy to brake free for service.

Alan...
What options (if any) do you have or could you recommend to replace handles, or preferably just the knobs(using existing stock arms) on larger penn senators (9,12,&14/0)?  I'm looking for a cost effective (<$40 typical total replacement cost) means of replacing excessively worn handles on larger senators. Also, do you have any recommendations as to how to acquire replacement clicker rings (no part#) new, new-old stock, or used) clicker rings for 12+14/0 senators?  Similar to part 62-114H2 on the 115L2 (Senator 2 9/0).

If you have SS-offset-T-bars, or offset rubber, or even non-offset lightweight plastic polymer, or anything that I can bolt on to existing 12/0 +14/0 handle arms for a resonable price (say under $25 ea.). I'd like to order at least 4 of each.  I might be interested in a couple complete handle sets (if they're under ($40 ea.?) as well.

Post by: alantani on November 18, 2013, 05:38:26 AM
if you just want to replace the handle grip, go with the 5/0 grip and drill out the old grip,  i have a handle arm for the 6/0 senator.  not sure if that arm will fit on the larger gear sleeves.  i don't work with these larger reels that often.

anyone else know if the 6/0 arm will fit on these larger reels?   :-\

As I recally, the handle arm openings on the larger reels are the same size as the 6/0.  I think Penn standardized this.

Thanks for the info guys!
Alan, Your handles look like high quality stuff but I think I'm gonna start by experimenting w/a few cheaper ($15-$25) replacement handle knobs designed for the 115 for now.  I should have enough stock handle arms to get me started (I'll start w/2-14/0s, &4-12/0s).  Will definately keep your products in mind though!

The 6/0 will fit the 9/0, but not anything bigger. The sleeves are larger on the 116 and up.

The sleeves are larger...are the handle opening larger as well?  I though they were down sized and have the same opening as the 6/0 and 9/0.

Unless penn standardized these in recent production reels. You are going to be disappointed. I mainly have older chrome bronze spools senators. The 6/0 handle wont fit a 12/0. Only the 9/0. Unless a custom sleeve has been installed. Maybe this picture is a little better to put it into perspective. My micrometer has a dead battery, so I can't use that to show you. The 6/0 (114H handle) is roughly 3/8" wide on the flat opening, the 12,14,and 16 handle is almost 1/2" wide.

Got my $15 handle knobs.  They were all designed for the 114.  They fit the stock 115 handle arm w/o mods, the 116 needed a small collar, and the 117 needed the larger color to match the inside handle arm diameter.  Do your reel knobs come with these shims Alan?
Title: Re: new handle grips for 2013
Post by: Shark Hunter on November 22, 2013, 07:11:57 AM
Like I said in my previous post. The 114H handle is good for the 114 and 115. Not the 116 and up. I don't know what collars you are speaking of, but Alan's handles fit the handle end, not the sleeve end.
Lee makes some bad #### handle arms for these that you can use Alan's handles on. :)

Rick,
I don't think Alan makes a handle arm for a 10/0. He just makes the handle. There is a gentlemen on here named Lee that does. You can find him in Keta's Kustom Parts. If you just want a stock handle, I can fix you up. This is one of Lee's custom arms with Alan's handle on the left.

I have one (so far) Keta Krank, and the price was low enough that I was almost embarrassed. And that included shipping.

As for Alan's handles, they're reasonably priced as well, and his shipping charges are also negligible. It's pretty apparent to me that these guys are doing this because they love it. They're sure not getting rich!

All of these posts have happened in the evening here on the east coast. I have yet to reach my customer.

I will contact him today and see what he is willing to pay. I am not interested in marking anything up for him...he sends me lots of work. I just want to put a good handle blank and handle together for his 10/0.

Thanks so far for all you interest...it seems like a stock handle may even be in the works....

Mark/MFB, are your referring to the Daiwa 900H?  If the handle for the 900h is the same as the Daiwa 600h, then the Penn 114 aka 6/0 handle is a perfect fit. Keta (on this forum in the for sale section) makes some nice handles. Also ebay has Daiwa 600h and Penn 114 (same thing) handles/griip combo's for sale. Just do an ebay search for Daiwa 600 handle.  Hope this helps.

Hi Leo,

Yes, but the 900H is bigger than the 600H, it maybe the same size as a 9/0, but I'm not sure. Already have Alan's drag upgrade & oversize handle grip on this. A longer handle would be the icing on the cake.

You need the correct size allen wrench to loosen the handle screw. Then you can separate the handle sleeve. Its probably dirty in there or dry and needs a little oil.

Al, my point exactly. I know they offset or bend the arm in to reduce torque under load, right? Wouldn't it be great for say the penn jigmasters and 112h.

Funny, Alan and I were just discussing that yesterday...we would need a press and a jig to do that, and then factory in the bend...is it done heated or cold?  it would then depend on the type of metal...and then we tabled that idea for now.

It would be cool 8) that would mean I would have to change some arms again!

Alan,

I'd like to move some stuff around.  I currently have an older style 2/0 handle grip with the SS Newell arm on my Newell 332.  I think I'd like to move this 2/0 handle over to my PG 255 and put a 3/0 handle on the Newell 332 instead.  As you can see from the attached picture the 2/0 handle has this little nipple (green circle) at the end which I need to transfer to the 3/0 (red circle).  Are the screws (red arrows) standard turn or reverse thread?  I assume I secure the circle part while turning the screw?  Sorry, don't have the parts in front of me.

I don't mean to cut in here, but they are standard turn bobsled. I have quite a few of them. Just make sure your allen wrench fits good. Alan puts them down tight! >:(

Hi Alan,

I need a few more handles.  Any more of the old style 2/0?  Just wondering before I place my order.

TIA

Bryan,

Did you get a chance to see if you have the 2/0 handle grips?

I have three Shiamno 8000D Baitrunners with knobs that are very tight, one just about frozen. I've tried TSI, WD40, mineral spirits and Reel X but nothing is helping. Any suggestions to get them free or should I replace the knobs? If replacing knobs, what will work?

Thx, Jim

for spinners, the handles from smoothdrag.com might work best.

As you can see in the picture Bryan, here are my most recent handles from Lee. The 12/0 handles are on the left. 114H on the right. The 116's are bigger hole.

What is the handle in the MIDDLE ?

I like the "beefier" area where the Grip attaches !

Thanks !

Its just a different design 9/0 Handle from Lee. I'm pretty sure these are going to be extinct.

Really impressed with Alan's grip! I first bought it for my Pro Gear 545, but moved that new handle to the Yellowtail Special and is a much better fit.

I agree, the 3/0 is better for the 545. (Though we're on a 2 year old thread, lol).
