Looks Great Tom
Oh, oh, oh, oh!!!
Tom are you going to offer these as a kit. Or is this just a prototype for show.
Mike
Just out of curiosity, do you need the 2 top posts if you are going with a solid frame?
Tom,
Exemplary work as usual!!!!!!

These will be offered as a kit.
I will probably add a spool before it's all said and done.

Bryan,
There wont be any top posts. This is going to be a completely topless kit.
The screw holes on the top will be for the harness lugs. They are going to be captured in the side plates.
Awesome work Tom! Are you making the spools as well? Those are very hard to find.

Thanks Sal,
Yes, spools will be on the list.
I will also be offering these with the wide frames, and as you know, those spools are rare as well.
Tom
I was concerned about the spool also. The rest can be found with a little effort. Looks like a good summer project.
Mike
Awesome Tom. Thanks for the clarification.
Absolutely awesome!
Can't wait to see it all done.
Ron
I don't want to get too far ahead of things, but what gear set would you put in a 'Magnum Mariner' ? 6/0?
Mike
It looks like a standard Mariner side plate not a "Magnum".
This is a excellent reel to bring Back from near extinction. The gears were strong enough and with the wider frame it will be a great reel. With a 113H stainless sleeve and stainless dog coupled with Adams insert kit you have a killer combination. All it will need is a stainless steel yoke.
Mike
What is the advantage of the 349 vs 114 narrow? What is the application for the 349? Just trying to understand the difference between the two.
Thanks!

349H & HS--3.25 to 1 114H--2.8 to 1 Stronger gears in the 114H Bigger drags in the 114H Advantage -114H narrow Rudy
I think the idea is to keep these old reels alive. The 114 has plenty of parts and can be had everywhere. But a 349h is a hard find.
I just purchased my second 349H Wahoo special in mint condition.
They are out there.
If I may be so bold.
Tom, you already make 4/0 side plates, it seems to me it would not be to hard to figure out how to put the 4/0 guts in a 349 plate. That would allow us 4/1 gearing and those monster drags from Alan as well as a double dog bridge etc. in a really tall spool. I couldn't see a better reel for bottom jigging or bait fishing on the bottom for the bigger critters.
Just food for thought.
Ron
What makes a 349 a wahoo special?
Newell wide kit.
Spool posts and stand.

Did you ever try a 114H narrow? I would hate to have a Warsaw or Goliath Grouper Pulling on my puny 349 even with all the upgrades. A stock 114 or 114H will out pull & outlast any 349. Tall spool? Did you ever measure a 114 spool diameter? Higher gearing doesn't make for efficent gearing to winch big Grouper away from thier hiddey hole. A 349 has it's place but not for bottom fishing for Big fish. It's a better reel for trolling & kites like it was designed for.
I have to agree with you Rudy. The 114H is a powerhouse in a small package. Especially with all the upgrades available.
I have Narrow's, Standard, Wide and Extra wide Versions.
Still, the 349 is a great reel, all have their place.
This is taking it to another level, here is what i'm thinking:
The possibilities are endless on this reel.
Having a custom frame, spool and plates, makes it pretty much a new reel.
Maybe Alan C. could merge and help create the best reel available.
It would be nice exploring with a floating spool, 2 speed and heat treated ss guts.
This would make it a killer reel.
I discussed something similar to Steve Carson a few years back, I mentioned to Steve that they should design a reel with a 4" diameter spool, or taller, in 2 1/4" width and having 2:1 ratio in low and 3.5:1 in high gear.
It would need to be light though, but having most parts in aluminum, that wouldn't be an issue.
I'm aware of the International, but haven't seen a reel in 2 1/4" width with a 4" diameter spool anywhere.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
With that said, I'm just glad Tom is offering these and will definitely buy them. I'm also glad I never jumped on the Bandwagon and purchase a 349 when you guys were raving about them.
I have the guts, and that would be all that it's needed.
Maybe with enough interest, Alan could make us the DD bridge on this one as well, along with his awesome -X gears.
Sal
So, my stuff on the bottom was more like jigging for BFT etc, where you need the speed from the high gears and big spool to move the jig. Seriously, though. I don't know that you could cause a 349 sized reel with all stainless 4/0H parts from the guys on here to fail any faster than a 114H of any width, even built with all the stuff from guys on here. Big chunks of stainless are big chunks of stainless. I agree that 4/1 would be a PITA with a really big, strong fish. But in that case you could always go back down to 3.2 (stock 113H) and put on a longer arm.
Sal is correct, of course, all these reels have there place.
Ron
The reel will have it's place once it is finished. People will be scrambling to get one. Just as soon as they see a finished reel. A day late and a dollar short as the saying goes. Drool drool drool and salivate and remove the picture from the wall so you can add just one more to your addiction as the wife is heading out the door.
Mike
If your wife is heading out the door, she was just looking for an excuse.
Gotta tell you,
That's a stupid cool reel.
Ron

No one makes a kit to turn the stronger 114H into a 349 width reel, a 114HNN (Jigmaster 501 width) is on my list of wants.

Most of my 349 pile was purchased for parts or were left in my shop when the owner learned about how rare spools were, 349 reels tend to warp spools when filled with mono worse than other reels. even the heavy bronze ones. With help from family here I have all but 2 in working order now, 12 fishable 349s. All 12 have 7+1 or 5+1 drags, 1 is a Newell "Wahoo Special", 2 with Tiberone aluminum spools (one a lefthand) and 1 lefthand with aluminum frame and spool.
Bearings continue to be hard to locate.
Comparing a 114HN to a 349H Wahoo Special is not fair, the 114H is a different class of reel. With the strength comes weight though.
Lee if you need bearings we can do some trading. Good parts are hard to find. Allot of the reels I see on ebay have millage. I just found a reel for about 60 dollars never used. I had wire on it and the side plate was engraved. I used it for parts but new reels are getting harder to find.
Mike
Bearings?
Because I haven't had time to make spools, I went with the stock bushings. They are a separate insert into the cup, so in due time you will be able to swap them out for a new spool and bearings.
The polished, anodized finish has been driving me nuts. I simply cannot find a vendor who can reliably remove the tooling marks. The bead blast was a hopeful trial, but the matte finish just doesn't work for me.
Lee every time I get a 349 in the shop thats not needed I will send it to you. That type reel wont get used around here. I have a regular 349 I'm sending soon.
Keith
Keith if you find some good condition outer rings for a 349HC please let me know - no splits reasonable chrome ;)
Let's see if I can get some pics to load...
Outstanding as usual, Tom! The bead blast may be OK if you can finish with Electro- Polishing? Do you have any good houses in the area that can try that for you?
All the best, .. Lou
Beautiful as usual Tom! How many colors are you offering?
Tom,
While you aren't a huge fan of the finish I absolutely love it and hope you do more stuff with it. I don't use 349's but if I did I would be ALL over these.

Beautiful as usual Tom! How many colors are you offering?
Sal,
I'd doing two options on these kits.
There will be 25 or so full frame and side plate kits in one color yet to be determined, and the second will be just just the frame in hard anodize black.
Lou,
I can't electropolish on top of the anodize. It will burn thru and leave the aluminum unprotected.
Thanks for all the compliments guys, without your input none of this would happen.
I think I'll send this reel around to a few of you to get a hands on evaluation. Again, the color is irrelevant...
Thanks,
Tom
The matte finish looks great Tom and I reckon polished would look great as well. If you are considering selling frames separately, I'm guessing that stock plates will fit your frame and also your plates would fit a tib or accurate wahoo special frame? If that's the case, is there a chance the plates will be available separately at some stage?
In the meantime, I am still interested in one of the narrow kits in whatever finish or color you decide on.
Mike
Skip the side plate question - I've realised the cut down sections of your side plates won't work with the Tib or Accurate full diameter frames. :-[

Lee, it could happen...with a little love, money, and definitely patience.
I need to figure out how I can get myself a CAD program that does not have yearly license agreements. I cannot afford that especially with the onetime program cost plus a CAD computer.
BTW, I saw these parts at Tom's the other week...they are spectacular. Tom is an awesome machinist = perfectionist. He doesn't like those little machine marks that probably wouldn't bother us but definitely bothers him. He wants to produce the best and cleanest product available. It can be difficult to keep costs down, but that still doesn't fix the fact that those little imperfections bothers him. I'm glad especially coming from a machinist that makes parts for medical device. ;D ;D ;D
The frames are at the plater and will probably be released in a couple weeks. I don't have my final costs yet, so stay tuned.
I just got a look at polished samples for the full kits and I'm happy with this new vendor.
Here's the wrinkle...... You all seem to like that matte finish!
So here's what I'm gonna do: Red. I'm going to have half the run polished, and half matte. There will be about 15 kits in either style. They should look good on the Christmas tree!
Again, no final price yet, but the matte should be cheaper.

Tom very graciously gave me his permission to post this ad on his thread. I have two Newell aluminum 349H spools to fit Tom's new 349H kits that I would like to sell. These spools also fit stock Penn 349H and 349HC reels.
The Newell spools weigh 6.3 ounces, which is half the weight of the 12.7 ounce stock Penn spool.
One Newell spool is new in the original box with receipt from 1988 and it is $95. The other Newell spool is very lightly used, a 9 on a 10 scale. It has a very slight wobble in my reel, which may be the reel, but spins forever. It is $80. I also have an unused Newell spool in the original box that is in mint condition except that it appears to have been dropped on a hard floor and has a large flat spot in the rim. Straightening it would be way above my pay grade, but if you want to give it a shot, you can have it for $35. Shipping is $4.94 to anywhere in the USA by First Class Parcel with tracking. We accept PayPal and ship worldwide. Please let me know if you are interested in any of the above.
Thanks,
Randy
Randy, I'll take a black Newell spool. Rudy
Newell spacer bars are a good match with the matte black frames;

Nice, and no lugs. My cross bars are all chrome or SS.
Alright folks,
I finally have the full reel kits in my hands! I just have to build a few to make sure everything fits correctly and then they will be available.
I'll post some pics tomorrow when I have better light..
There is only one color, a nice polished RED! Only 25 of these kits were made, so if you want one, don't wait!
Price is $180 shipped in the US.

Excellent! Have a Newell 349 spool that has a bent shaft, that I have attempted to straighten, with only moderate success. Learning how to set up and measure the spool runout from a master machinist would be most helpful.
hi, to really check the run out on a spool you will need to have or have access to a, precision surface plate, small set of precision ground v blocks, a good .0001 or .0005 test indicator, & a height gage or good transfer stand. Ok to check the run out of your spool you want to set your spool in the V blocks only on the spindle ends, move your transfer stand/ height gage with the test indicator attached over the spool ends, this should be raised up so it is not touching the spindle ends, try to center the needle point on the center of the spindle shaft where the bearings ride, bring the test indicator down until the needle point just touch the top of the spindle shaft but bring it down far enough so that you are using about .008 to .010 of travel or movement, or until you have full contact with the tip of the needle on the test indicator, once you touch the top of the spool shaft zero out your test indicator so that the needle sit at +0- on the dial, now you are going to slowly rotate the spool, starting with the right side of the spool, being careful to Only move just the spool, you don't want to move the v blocks or test indicator in any way, ok let say you get a reading of +.0047 after you rotate the spool 1 full revolution, what this is telling you is you have a high spot of .0047, if it was a -.0047 then you would have a low spot on your spool shaft, mark the 0 point on the spool somewhere, then mark the high or low spot. Now without moving anything but your transfer stand or height gage move it around to where you can repeat this process on the other end, what you are shooting for is to have 0 run out at this point, from 1 end to the other end of the spool, once you have this then you can move on to checking the flanges or rim of the spool, you want both ends of the spindle to be exactly the same as far as size goes also. You check the rim of the spool in the exact same way you checked the spindle, my self I only allow a total run out of .002, if it's a high spot the you might be able to sand it very lightly in the area that is high. FWIW this whole process is called checking Concentricity.
Thank you for that description. I might be able to get access to the required precision measuring equipment.
So far, I have used my mini-lathe to turn the spool, and have a dial gauge, but understand the limitations in precision with this method. I have been able to get it reasonably close, but still get notice-able flange wobble at the left side of the spool. I can live with it, but would like to get it much closer to perfect. I think my biggest problem is making controlled corrections without "overshooting" it, and having to start over again.
Concentricity and perpendicularity are the two keys. Hopefully next week I'll have time to do some inspection.
The electricians are supposedly showing up today to wire the mill and compressor. Fingers crossed they show....
Tom

349 and 349H are the same, the gears and yoke are the only difference and they are interchangeable. I prefer the single le4ver 349's over the double lever. Right now I am searching for 12-349 yokes to build a low speed 349, the 12-39H are more common.
I am out of 5+1 349 and 349H drag washers but have 3 SS AR dogs left. If I get commitments for 4 or 5 sets of drag washers I will make another cutting, Smooth Drag should have a few sets still too.
Put in a 113H gear sleeve.
Lee how many yokes do you need. I have bag of 349 yokes. I need your address to send you the pinions and brass spool. I will throw in the yokes. I keep deleting your address . I have parts Sheridan Let me know if you need anything. Just consider it a down payment if I need another rod done. I even have nos handles. Lee I have some ideas on a few parts to make so these parts should cover it.
Mike
I have a black 2 lever 349 I've used once so it should have nice internals. Sounds like the upgrades are a drag kit, an SS gear sleeve, SS dog and I'm pretty much set. Good to know it's the same gear sleeve as a 113h so a good selection of handles.
I think I'll stick with the gear set so I have one narrow reel with a low gear.
I'll PM my contact info for the dog Lee, thanks for the help.
Thanks Mike I think I'm good on parts, but I'll holler if I need something.

The 349 gear sleeve has a larger diameter ratchet than the 113H but they both use "type B" handles. The smaller ratchet does not cause engagement problems with a 15-349 AR dog.

I have 6 8-349 main gears and will have 6 349 "gear sets" when I get the gears you sent. I am waiting to see if 4 I found are available but I need 6 to go with the gear sets. I have a few new 12-349H yokes, 14-349 AR dog springs and a bunch of new Penn 15-349 AR dogs if you need some.
I have enough replacement parts to get 4 more of my 349 "parts reels" working and I will put a 349 gear sets on one of my halibut reels.

I was going to put my kit together today but all I have is the handle side of a 349. I don't have a click spring to go in the other side. It doesn't come with the kit. What size is it and what other reel can I get one from? Couldn't find it shown on Pennparts. Thanks
I have one if you need one.
Mike
Thanks Mike, I PM you if I can't find one.
I found 62-309 screws into a 149 side plate, msyticparts says it's the same spring as a 113H. Is that it?
"Edited as per Moderators to correct Scott's Bait & Tackle over to their new store name Mystic Reel Parts / www.mysticparts.com"
If they have the same part number it must be.
Mike
Just wondering if the 149 spring is the same as the 349 before I scarf one out of the bone yard.
Hi Sheridan, the 349 click springs are about 1/2" larger diameter than the 62-309 spring.
Maybe a 6/0 spring will fit - I don't have a 6/0 to check but the photo on Scott's looks to be around the right size. If you don't have a 6/0 spring in your bone yard, Mikeysm's generous offer sounds good!
It would be handy to know if the 6/0 spring works for future reference.

Thanks Guys, I'l see what I can scrounge

Sheridan, I have a 349H left side plate that you can have but if I remember correctly, the spring is riveted in so you are going to have to drill it out. If you want it I will put it in the mail when I get home.
Thanks Randy, I'll holler if I haven't figured it out by then.

I have 10 or so 349 clicker springs and can part with one or two also.
Tom,
I just wanted to say how awesome your reel kits are! This 349 is badass as it gets! Keep up the incredible work!! 8)

Thank you!

Finished mine kit up last weekend. It went together flawlessly but I could live without the harness lugs. No where's the skills of Sal but super smooth and great free spool. The monkeys were impressed. Thanks for making these kits
If someone needs a spool for a kit I have a blue tiburon spool in need of a home
Sheridan
Very nice Sheridan....
....it would be hard to upgrade that beauty
Looks fantastic Sheridan! 8)
Beautiful reel Sheridan, Ted's handle sets it off nicely, it's a great match!
Sal
Thanks looking forward to fishing this one. Ted's handle and shift lever are spot on too
I tried turning the lugs over when I was building it and last night too. Not sure but maybe I'm doing it wrong but I can't get them to go in anyway but up. Any trick too it?
Looking at the way they're made, you will not be able to flip them. Personally, I like them just as they are .
Tom did a great job on those as well.
By the way, did you have any issues with the clicker spring? Mine needed to be bent a little and it is now working nicely.
A little shim here and there and these kits are perfect...I prefer to use shims when needed.
Tom should give seminars to show other how it's done, I don't think you could get any closer tolerance as he has it and yet everything fits to perfection.
Lots of good features on this kit.
