Hello All,
Is a Delrin washer recommended for the 4-stack Newells with the recessed main gear?
If so, what thickness?
I have always used a PENN HT-100 or Smoothdrag Carbontex jigmaster sized greased washer under the gear.
Quite honestly it doesn't matter which drag material you use under the main gear because it doesn't provide any significant drag enhancement. It was a sales ploy to advertise the reel with a 4 stack drag over Penn's 3 stack.
Jerry, good to hear from you buddy!!!
Under the main gear drag washers have been used for many years from Abus in the past to today's Accurates. So it must be providing some amount of drag if not it would have been stopped a long time ago and not incorporated into the new Accurate Star Drag Reel.
Delrin, under the gear, makes it smoother. Delrin on top of the stack makes it silky smooth ;)
Forget extra drag for a moment. Think reliable operation. On a 4 stack Newell the CF material works fine under the gear in the recess. Delrin will also work.
On a 3 stack Newell I have tried CF under the gear which failed when the gear sleeve sprocket ripped the CF. This interferes with dog engagement and reduces smooth operation. So for me delrin under the gear always on the 3 stack models. Never had a failure this way.

In theory, you'ed think there would be drag from an under-the-gear CF brake washer. How then, to keep the anti-reverse sprocket from tearing up the CF? Extreme polishing? There does seem to be a noticable increase in smoothness from a bottom + top delrin washer arrangement.
On the Penns, Brian's 5+1 stack where you get a metal washer to go along with the CF under-the-gear and need a gen.2(keyed alla way down) gear sleeve, it works great. Are the Newell's the same?
I been waitin on the prices for the Newell reels to go down, so I can try them out, but they always seem to go up.
If you just think about it for a few seconds, it doesn't matter whether the friction surface is above or below the gear. When you twist that star tighter, everything between it and the ratchet is getting squished tighter, applying the brakes. Materials like Penn's red fiber disc and phenolic washers were chosen for use under the gear because they were less likely to be shredded by the ratchet. Carbon fiber can work great under the gear too...but requires a little ingenuity...or a trip to Mystic parts. 8)

I have been using this arrangement (if space permits)

Very thin teflon under the sleeve
1mm ish delrin on top of rachet and under the gear - the oversize washers always cover the dog so it doesn't catch the edge of the washers.
I also put a tiny teflon washer under the dog - to keep everything lined up.
In the picture I can see the top washer is on an angle?

Me too, is the dog the same thickness as the ratchet? It might just look that way because there is no main gear to hold it in place....
Thanks for the pictures Chris, I think every washer would sit quare once the rest of the drag stack is in place & the star screwed down, and if there is a teflon washer under the star, it make it easier to turn the star. thanks again Chris, cheers Don.
Guys - the whole thing sits square once the gear sits on it ;) It's just a slight distortion of the washer due to the wad cutting process. I've done this on a few reels and no complaints todate :)

Yes, smoother what I want.
Delrin is a good option.

Yes Sal - if I remember correctly you came up with this idea ;)
