this is a tranx 500 I've been working on, still waiting for the replacement parts and tons of bearings that need to be replaced.

I am not the most precise with my cleaning routine, usually just empty the remains in my water bottle over the reel when fishing onshore, and after a boat I do a more thorough job by washing under running water.    Have never experienced anything like you are showing here.

Are those salt crystals or grains of sand in the reel?

Thanks for the reply that stuff really makes bearings spin and has a crazy smell I was road racing motorcycles in late 80's and working in a speed shop we got a drum of some solvent from Fairchild Semiconductor and had the same smell!!!

ABU switched to a plastic idler gear in the tail plate so the levelwind carriage could not break or cut off your finger tip if it was caught.

haven't seen it anywhere in ages.  i've pretty much settled on corrosion x as an all purpose oil, and ti 321 for spool bearings.

Fred, you are an absolute treasure to this community. Occasionally I ponder how many vintage reels (that would otherwise be consigned to a parts bin or even rubbish) must be functional today thanks to you, it must be an enormous number.

That is a charter boat out of Berkeley, California.

Alan and I should be there around mid-day Thursday. So I should have time to get some groceries and I can cook reasonably well. My only gluten free, vegan recipe is black coffee, though.
How many will be there?
