Title: Convert TLD20 to Topless?
Post by: Phinaddict on March 16, 2010, 03:20:51 AM
Hi Alan,
I fished an old TT30 "topless" by removing the top crossbar and it worked fine,
(aluminum frame but lost the harness lugs).
Before I buy a TLD20 2 speed, (or maybe just a TLD20), do you see any problem taking the top cross bar off
the top  and using it "topless".  It would be for  40# test.... so drag would
be 12-15# max.... do you think the plastic frame will hold up and not flex?

I know there are aftermarket frames out there, I am just trying to do it on the cheap.
Anyone else tried this?

Thanks in advance....
Gene

BTW- Great site... I have been reading for awhile, just posted today....

Don't do it on the single speed; they have a very weak frame to start. And I'd recommend against doing it on the two speed as well. The graphite is just not strong enough.

gotta agree with bill on this one.  it would probably work, but it's just asking for trouble.  you know, i actually have one of the aftermarket frames for the tld 20 two speed.  i ordered one up for a guy and he changed his mind.  they retail for $168.  i'll sell it for $140 shipped if you're interested.  it's only a deal if you already have the reel.........

Thanks for the replies gents. Alan, I will pass on your offer since I do not have the reel.
Good to know though.
