I finally got a chance to work on the Fathom 40.

Not sure why the pictures were all reposted at the end.  I'll have to look into that.

To answer some questions –
I turned all of the round parts but I did use a mill to cross drill and slot cut the mandrel.

Boon and jurelometer
The plain bushing that I'm replacing is close to 9mm or roughly twice as wide as the ball bearing (5mm).  The thing that is interesting is that the bore that the bushing is pressed into is only about 4mm long.  My guess is that the bushing will still provide additional support and the short bore that it is pressed into makes alignment with the inner ball bearing easier.  Perhaps someone who knows more can chime in.




I finally manned up and bored and trimmed the case.



That section of the case is actually pretty thick



The bearing adapter fits better than expected.



The company that I work for is moving to a new location so I'll have no life for the next week.


I still have to finish the gear shield.  Then I can do a functional test to make sure the gears work, polish and anodize and then final assembly.

Targeting and over harvesting slow maturing fish does that.  We still have a lot of yelloweye but they are managed with CA numbers.

Lee - I remember those fish...and they ain't down here in SoCal anymore!  I don't think Hardy Boy Todd believed me when I fished with him last summer in Port Hardy and told him that pretty much any of the rockcod we caught that day would have been jackpot contenders on a SoCal bottomfish boat. - john

Enjoy to read your note about Peen spinfisher ,It make me to dig out my 712z that I bought long time ago , never put line on it .What is the different between 712 and 712z ? For the same size spool with Dam 220 , 712z is much more heavier but it's quality reel I may start fish with it .Other Peen that I use more often is 4300ss and 4500ss 

Not sure who made the DAM SLS reels in Japan.  Some have speculated Shimano.  Maybe the similarity on this drag setup between Shimano & DAM SLS supports that idea?  In any event, take care of those MLX drag disks.  Shimano has no parts for these reels (I called), so replacement would be limited to DIY or finding something from an independent seller/supplier.

The MLX drag system works well in the models I have (200 & 300), but not sure the special parts are any better than some good old keyed/eared washers and good friction disks, as you can find in hundreds of other reels.

Ted, here are two nice silver 500 spools (one is missing the line peg) and a red one for $60, plus one red spool that a very generous and talented person painstakingly polished and sent to me, which comes free with the other three.

A PG541 just got new lease on life. Thank you Rich for your generousity
