I have a bunch of parts form various penn reels. I would like a 99 size Jigmaster. I have a standard Jigmaster 500 and a reel stand and posts from a 112H. If I score a original 99 spool can I assemble these parts into a 99 size Jigmaster ?
No! Parts for a 99 are hard to come by. Check eBay, there is a 99 for $15 and parts also. Good luck!
No as in if I had a 99 spool it woulden't work / fit or no, parts are hard to come by ?
Finding a 99 width stand will be the tough part once you have the spool.
You could always go with a tiburon frame... they're on ebay.
Dom
Yes Dom, but with the parts that he has he would end up with a 501. The best bet is to buy the complete reel on eBay, parts are hard to find. Another option would be a surfmaster 250, I believe that the guts are the same. The 99 stand has 6 holes 3 on each side, very unusual for a reel that small, but he could use his spool and a Tiburon as you mentioned.
The posts for the 99 and the 112H are one and the same, penn part 37-65. So the 112H stand I have is the same width as the 99 stand. The 112H stand fits the Jigmaster frame along with the posts. In theory if I had a 99 spool be it original or Newell / Tiburon I could pop it in and have an Albacore Special. At this point I need to know if the original 99 spool is compatible with my Jigmaster sideplates
If I remember correctly, I don't believe that it would work. Sorry, I don't have a 99 spool to test it. Just out of curiosity, why not go with a 112h or a 501 ?
I have three 112h reels and two 501 reels. I need a midsized Jigmaster, I always get need and want mixed up... I still want a definitive answer on the 99 spool before I go the Tiburon total conversion route
Hang in there, I'm sure that someone else can confirm what I said about the spool.
Dom, don't you have one of those reels ?

Sal, you probably have 3 in mint condition with the box ;D, but I think I do have one at my old man's house. I'll check next time I make it down there (NJ).
Dom
Alan's right, it ain't cheap, but if you want it you can get it.
Dom
There has to be an old salt out there that can tell me if a Penn 99 spool will fit the Jigmaster sideplates with the rite stand and posts. I beleive I am set up with the rite stand and posts all assembled and ready for a spool. I have a friend that bought out an old bait and reel shop, we went through all his many spools and not one for the 99

ahem, that would be me...... ;D
one of the best conversions ever made was to take a penn 99 silver beach, pop off the silver beach side plate and pop on a jigmaster 500 side plate. the fit was perfect. it made a great reel for 25# mono. alot of the albacore guys in northern california used this reel.
Alan is correct, he and I did this a few years ago, Dec2008 actually. The 500 Jigmaster R/H plate assembly fits with no modifications, and you get faster stronger gears and larger drags. I used the original 99 chrome over brass spool so it makes a nice small wireline reel also. Just buy the stainless gear sleeve and fine tooth star from Alan, as well as an upgraded handle. It goes without saying HT100 under main gear!
I'm wondering on what would make that reel so special, is it the additional line capacity compared to the 501? It couldn't be that much more :-\
actually, it's a great size! one of my old school favorites!
I still don't get it though, same gears and the line capacity is about the same.... but the 501 doesn't have mismatched parts and it's a couple of ounces lighter.
No rhyme or reason...One of lifes mysterys. And I want it!
Gotcha! Go for it!
Like we say in my world....whatever floats your boat.
the size of the 99 spool is midway between the 500 and the 501. so the 501 is straight 20# mono, the 99 is straight 25# mono, and the 500 is straight 30# mono. great for inshore goofing off!
Here's one with two spools!

Ok, I see what you guys are talking about, I just measured all (3) reels.... they do increase @ 1/2" from the 501. I was always amazed about the 501, that it would hold 320yds of 30lb. mono :-\.
PS
Didn't have the 99, I sold mine for $100 last year, I did measure the 112h for width though.
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm still looking for a plain jane spool.
There's a P29S 99 Spool on here. Don't know if Alan still has it.

Thanks Jigger, Iv'e had my eye on it but moneys tight. Maybe I can swing a trade for the spool or maybe a partial trade tward the full frame and spool kit with Alan for a Penn 114H with a Accurate frame on an Aftco handle.
I'm in the same boat, drooling over a silver Tiburon Frame for a 501 and cannot make my mind up. :-\
still got it ....... ;D
Is the 113 narrow kit still available? I want it...I need it, I must have it. I don't know what I will do with a narrow 113 but I want one ;D.

i still have a couple the 4/0 narrow kits as well..... ;D
I will order one sometime next month. I don't know why I "need" one as I have plenty of newer reels that will do the job better but I love my older Penns.
penn could have made a ton of money by introducing a narrowed plain 113hl instead of going high tech with the 113hn baja special. pity......
Yup

How true! I've got a 113H and a 113HL. With Alan's narrow kit and some 4:1 Newell gears, it would be nice to make the HL into a HLN and keep my 113HN company.
Alan, ummm, how much for a narrow spool and frame? Got any 4:1 gears lying around?
Rob
Oh great, now I have to dip into my Baja 2012 funds to beat you to one ;D

Alan can retire with a good auction. ;D ;D Go for it!
:( ;D ;D
no 4:1 gears. that would really make the reel something!
So true.
I've done the Tiburon/Kolekar upgrade to my red 500, 112H and 113H (narrow), and now just collecting parts to complete a 114H narrow conversion.
I love fishin' em, but they're also a pleasure just to admire on the shelf.
The 113H in particular just looks, feels and works 'right' in this format.
Want/need - sometimes they're indistinguishable ... ;)
Thanks Alan!
I found a NIB original Penn 99 spool for a great price. Should be here early next week. Hope it works.

I'm sure it will work. I bought an old 99 Silverbeach reel several years ago with a plastic spool and also purchased a separate chrome 99 spool. Both spools fit in all of my 99 width Jigmasters (Newell and Tiburon frames, and one with a 30-66 stand). I prefer them over the 500 width Jigmasters.

Nice work there. You have built a lovely reel, too nice to take fishing but I'm sure you will not be happy until you are catching with it. That's how I feel about reels, they always look better on a rod with a good fish hanging from it. ;)
Thanks Irish... I always like to have a project going on. Sturgeon are starting to bite so it's time to fill the reel with straight #25 mono and strap on some of Hippo's Sturgeon killer swingarm leaders and go get um. I am building a new rod for the Franken reel...its a Seeker CLBF 708 blank 15-25lb. It's ready for guides now. I have a new project reel, My brother built a 4/0 accurate sideplate reel so I get his left overs. I have most of the parts, some are rusted...might blast them and Duracoat or powdercoat them. Might even Duracoat the sideplates...

At the time I scored 2 NOS 99 spools. So I built 2 ...
Cool
Sweet reel! Great compilation of parts! 8)
Thanks... the second reel has US side plates and innards, Newell base and bars, NOS 99 spool and another 12H handle... love the 99 size reel.
Cool
Boy this has me confused. How did a nine year old thread start again?
Sorry... I messed up. I was trying to attach the pics to a later post about Jigmaster /112H...
I'm tech impaired.
Cool
