Title: Tackle hoarders, what have you picked up lately???
Post by: pjstevko on September 14, 2022, 07:25:54 PM
There's a thread like this on the "other" site and I like seeing what other people have bought lately so I thought I'd start a similar thread here. Plus it will make me and the other tackle addicts know we're not alone in our hoarding....

So, what have you picked up lately????

Me? I just got a killer deal on a Mak 10ii SEa and I'm gonna use it for 40# bait!!!!

(PS....If Alan or other mods don't approve of this thread feel free to delete it)

An Abu/Zebco Cardinal 7X, with the dark-rust brown gearbox. A trade, so no number increase. The 7X, has a higher gear ratio, slightly larger rotor and spool, and a metal ossilation/spool shaft connection insteada plastic, but  also has smaller gear teeth to get the 5:1.
The 6 that it replaces, is in good shape, everything works and has braid/mono line on the spool, if anyone is interested.

anyway, how many weeks or months ago still qualify as "lately"?

I havent bought any fishing reel lately but bought a factory Calstar GF700M rod that was rebuilt and done last week

- UC Zeus 3 jigging blank (still on the works)

Great choice Mark that rod makes an excellent 40lb baitstick fished off the bow of a sportfisher on a tuna drift, as well as a great rod for throwing colt snipers and other jigs.

In order
Penn 506hs
Abu ultra mag XLV
Mitchell 622
Abu ultra mag XL
Sealine 27sh
Everol "waterproof" 1220
Trying to remember the order of acquisitions before that but im realizing that everything I've bought recently has been baitcaster or conventional. I came here as a spinner enthusiast. I was afraid this would happen.

Mak 15T and a Shimano Abyss 30-50lb rod. Pure YT bait setup. Probably get spooled with 65lb hollowcore.

I'd kinda like a Stella 4000SWB or SWC if I came across one for the right price.

Dunno what means recent, but say, this season:

Squall 15DCS
6500 C3CT Mag Elite
two Abu 6000
Bunch of pimping parts for Abu's including Simon Simonura handles
Built a Rod geeks 13 6-16oz heaver
Penn LB 60. They are always worth the ten bucks I paid!
Some various Shimano spinners, several old boxes of tackle and one of the 6000's for $37 at estate sale!
A ten dollar Cardinal

Yep I bit on them on the Bay .He didn't have a clue what he had and that shows in the rest of his listings which are Ridiculously headed towards MARS on the price.
I have what is not already perfect on these over 300 bux worth of NEW parts to put them in like new condition.
One is going in my mediocre collection Stock ,One I am beefing up with Aluminum Spool and things, the other is going to a Good Member Client. These are True Lefties with the LH stamped on plate as well as reverse threaded Bridge and star as well as left hand Dogs ,Mains and pinions.

I guess this counts?

I paid for this sailfisher. Instead I got a plastic sack with a bent, broken Olympic DS5/Dohzuki 500DG inside.  It's like a giant Penn 350 clone with a line counter.  Got my money back and I guess I'm now the proud owner of my first Olympic.

I'm gonna take it apart.  Anybody need to see what's inside?

You can pretty much make a lefty out of a lot of reels just by filing the Ratchet gear or replacing the Bridge with a Left hand one if available .
A TRUE Penn LH 49 from Factory has left hand threaded Star ,Gears, and Dog and the Cams and Springs  are Different as well PLUS The Side Plate is Marked LH was my original point .
Never saw a 349 marked LH . I have Penn 112,113H,and several Ocean city Reels I converted to Left Hand but none are Marked on Plate from Factory .
The Marked LH reels were a Short Run I was told and discontinued in the 1940's .
They still made Left Hand Reels but just were not Marked on Plate .

Like the 349 and 349H they did not make different sideplates for the 349 variations.  Some 349H have 2 levers some have one lever.  The only difference is the hole for the second lever is not there.  I built a low speed single lever 349 but I do not think penn made them.  All of the single lever 349H reels I have seen are also maroon.

Do you want a clean stand?  I can look in the pile if you want to replace the beat-up one.  I was buying cheap mariners if they had clean handles...for my sailfishers.

I'm glad to see those plates where they belong!  There's a vented spool out there, too.  I think I hear it calling you.

I don't have any 349's yet, but I look at them often.  I want to say that I've seen the H and HC's in black.
I'm curious if the inside of the H plate has the structure to convert it to HC by drilling the hole for the eccentric and simply adding the parts.  The outside looks like it's molded for the hole that would be required.

That vented spool and box is on the bay.  Been there a while cause it's a little steep.

I'm in the same boat as you for shiny sailfisher parts.  I have a 1st year and a later 130 build waiting on chrome.

Clean LB 60's are the only resource I've had for 37-60 posts on my 130's.  Nobody is selling those posts in good condition.  285 posts have the same part# but are thinner, go figure,...and believe me, it shows when you use them on a 130.

Yes you can but I would not modify a single lever 349 sideplate.  I have two lever sideplates I would trade for single lever one if you need one.

I have all of the parts (new) in my project box to build a "new" 349/349H, including the proper
rings, gear sets (349 and 349H) and a NIB bronze spool.  Fortunatly my 349 parts were not in the building that burnt last month.

A '78 or so, Shimano Bantam. I was thinkin' 'bout lil baitcasters and Shimano came to mind, what about their old stuff? There's so much plastic/graphite composite on the modern stuff.
Then I remembered a post by Mo on one of these reels he acquired. Also, OC-1 Steve provided some interesting history in that thread on the "Lew's speed spool-first Shimano baitcaster" connection.
METAL! Yes, those first Shimano's were almost completely metal; even the handle-knobs were wood insteada plastic. I'd call this era of Shimano baitcasters an "approximate imitation" of the Abu 5000 based baitcasters.
A few years latter Shimano started using "Mag control"(this 100 only has 2-centrifugal brake weights and spool shaft friction control), then close to the same time, graphite parts became the thing. Ah, the 80's... JMO, but so many things changed for the worse then...
Bought it unused with one cover plate dent that I can live with. No signs of ever having line on it or screws being lossened up, and it casts 3/4 oz. great! 2- ball bearings and only 49 parts.

Abu 5500C, Abu 1000, Abu 5000, Daiwa 210, Johnson Sabre, Daiwa minicast, Zebco 6050 (which Fred rebuilt after my buddy ran over it, thanks Fred!), Olympic VS 1500 I got for my eighth birthday.

Clean LB 60's are the only resource I've had for 37-60 posts on my 130's.  Nobody is selling those posts in good condition.  285 posts have the same part# but are thinner, go figure,...and believe me, it shows when you use them on a 130.

forgot about this DEAL ....lol
Got a NEW Part for the Sailfisher you MIGHT be Enter Rested in to trade.

Got a few new things this year:

Okuma Custom Blue, it went to Cedros this year
Daiwa PMF55,  it also went to Cedros this year
Abu 7000C (Thanks Alex!)
Abu 7000C3 future catfish reel
ProGear 255 - my second one and also my favorite reel

Bottom rod is an Okuma swimbait rod purchased used locally - it went to Cedros with the PMF55, good combo for swimbaits and calico bass
Top rod is a custom built Phenix Black Diamond 809H 20-50, it went to Cedros as my surface iron rod paired with a PG 2500, another good combo. My local rod builder ran out of yellowtail decals, so he used a Dorado instead

Good, but I just used it for dropper loop. It brought up a 15# Sheepshead.

METAL! Yes, those first Shimano's were almost completely metal; even the handle-knobs were wood insteada plastic.

simpler early post-Lew's Ryobi (V-mag III & IV, etc.) are also well-worth a look

Turners black friday sale.Today I finally found the rod I've been looking for for a few months, a Phenix Trifecta lite 904. This is an awesome rod for surf fishing throwing the Lucky craft 110 minnows for various surf species especially halibut. The Phenix rods have had low stock since the pandemic, as the blank shipments from china have been few and far between.

that tiburon reel is cool...what's it for...tuna on a kayak? and your abu is likely a black max 3600 depending on the weight...but that's what i reckon...if you dremel all the parts shiny and some light oil she's a fine little casting reel

I picked up some more surf rods...Okuma's HCS (Hawaiian Custom Surf) Rods in 13 and 14 foot for fishing in Hawaii.  These are 3 piece rods set up for fishing spinners, but I will strip the guides, re-position them and add more guides for surf bait casting with Newell 338s for the 13 foot rods and 344s for the 14 foot rods.  They are super light and I just like the feel of them.

Why yes it is. The real deal, not the version I made. Not mentioned above is the brake plate with ratchet AR that's already on my bench waiting to swap in. I wanna use this puppy at the beach so that backup AR is more for the sand than any fighting I'll be doing on 20# braid.

I got Rob's (Beachbob) parts leftover from his CT conversions (again!) to rebuild some old warriors, hopefully. An alcohol lamp in pursuit of bubble-free finish. A $httr's full hat for the below freezing boat rides. Some 12/0 wide gap circle hooks.  Oh yeah, these little 5'6" solid glass jigging rods called Liquidsticks- pretty green with green metallic wraps...for $16 bucks new in store. PRC all the way, but I don't know how they can be built and sell that cheaply even PRC-made. Just fine for hanging a slob of bait off boat in a holder on smaller Penn's.

Quote from: Shellbelly on January 09, 2023, 02:30:30 AMIf my wife made me sit across from a Psychiatrist and explain this, I would first ask him, "Got any of these?"

I am fortunate to have a wife who supports my tackle hobby.

One thing that helps tremendously in keeping the "spousal noise" near "0" —- I get a lot of packages of reels shipped in.  And she doesn't know if these are repairs/restorations for clients —- or reels I have purchased.

Plus, it helps to use some of the reel repair labor $$$ for things like major purchases, trips, RV & Trailer stuff, even a replacement wedding ring for the one she lost in the trash compactor after losing some weight a few years ago.

Of course, there needs to be periodic subtle reminders of where the source of the hobby income comes from —- reels, lest they forget.

Your thought about the question to the Psychiatrist reminds me of the time I needed a root canal.  My dentist sent me to a specialist.  While in the chair, the talk got around to the outdoors and fishing.  When I mentioned that I repair and service reels as a hobby —- he said that he had a 5 gallon bucket full of Penn 209's up at the cabin that were not working.  Over the years, he trolled at Courtright reservoir where his cabin was —- and the LW mechanisms kept breaking on the 209's —- every season.

He would just buy a couple of new 209's every year, and just toss the broken ones in the bucket.

He trolled lead-core with cowbells or Dave Davis flashers —- that put a lot of stress of the mechanisms.

Got a call from him a couple of weeks later to come on by the office and pick up the 5-gallon bucket of 209's.  There were (16) in there.  All had bent LW guides, busted nylon idler gears, gouged LW worms, or worn pawls.

He said if I would fix up (2) for him, I could keep the rest.  I fixed up (4) —- and returned the bucket —- and kept (12).

I support my wife's interests and endeavors —- and she supports mine.  Very fortunate.

Best, Fred

Oh, my wife isn't too hard on me.  She knows I need hobbies or I'll go dormant.  She's just practical in areas where I'm not.  Her view is that I can only use one reel at a given moment.  Such flawed logic from an intelligent person! ;)

I'm certainly quite far from the expert in the room. But the mag brake replaces the need for spool tensioner and the centripedal brakes, not the thumb. You still need the thumb. But i can't help thinking that these guys casting for distance records aren't likely lacking thumb skill, but they use them.

That reel I described above really means free when it free spools. The mag is the only brake. But I've done pretty well-knock on wood-at avoiding ratnests while casting pretty far.

My latest yesterday was a Shakespeare 2062 missing the decal/medallion on the side and non-functioning a/r and Mitchell 304 with bad peeling paint, $15 for the pair. Cleaned up the Shakespeare, coupla drops of gun oil got the a/r back to life and the Mitchell just needed gross old grease removed and relubed. Gonna find rods, get em spooled and fish both of them.

I've been looking to upgrade my "heavy" game up from the Fathom 40NLD2.  So while browsing fleabay I was looking at the Fathom II 60NLD2, especially from the Australian sellers.  Woke up this morning and had a "Buy It Now" offer from the AUS seller for $258.  With tax, shipping, import, etc $290 delivered.  So I got up early, did the dishes, made breakfast, vacuumed, dusted, and asked SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) if I could buy it 🤣. With 50# of advertised drag (wishful thinking I suppose) and 700 yards of 100# braid I think I'm ready for a rematch with last years a##@|% tuna.  I know it's not a VISX or Makaira , but considering what the Fathom 40 went through last year I have high hopes for the 60N.  Delivery is estimated to be 9-20 days, but I have dealt with the seller before and I expect it on the low end of the scale.   Bill

PJ, I'm thinking a good 40-60# reel for irons, wahoo, and dropper loop.  It casts farther than I want to retrieve.  Right now I have 80# braid and a long top shot of 50# mono.  I used it for yo-yo last year and it was a workout for throwing irons all day.  I will probably set up the 40N for yo-yo and wahoo and the Baja Special for dropper loop.  Bill

Bill, congrats on getting approval from the household financial authority. You are wise to retire your 40NLD2 when the bigger models are around (don't ask me how I know).

Hope the FTH 60 works out for you - imho you should hold out for a hvy frame reel for 100#+. Beg, grovel, capitulate for another hundred or 2.

recently I picked some reels up that a friend gave me, they came in a old forgotten rag bag, many were broken cheap and disposables reels that went directly to the trash can and only these ones seemed to worth the time and money to repair them, could be hard to find their missing parts, few felt pretty rough but seems that was only the old factory grease and old dirt.

reels in not particular order
Daiwa Procaster PR15, levelwind not working
Daiwa Procaster PR10G, just need a good service
Shimano Magnunlite Speedmaster BSM-1550-B , Just need a good service
Shimano Cardiff 200A, needs a good service and probably bearings
Quantum 1310MG, needed a good service and already upgraded the main drag to carbontex https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,37739.0.html
Shimano MLX 200 spinning, needs a good service
Shimano Sedona 4000FB, feels pretty smooth, needs a good service, a Spool assembly and new handle

A small-size 8, 2-speed, LD, Shimano Speedmaster should be here soon. Thought about its competitors: the small Avet 2-speeds and the comparable Penn Fathoms, but decided to give Shimano a shot and I liked the no-shipping price.
Kinda like going to car dealership with a Honda in mind and comming home with a Hyundai cause it was cheaper, with a longer warranty, in the long-run you might lose-out... I say that, cause I wonder how long parts will be available for it and maybe even what spare parts I should stock-up on now, it being Shimano. Any Ideas or experiences?

I recently picked up a pile of old reels for spares or repair. I also just took delivery of a nice little Mitchell 300 and still waiting for a lovely Abu Ambassadeur XLT2 LH Synchro to arrive.
I also got my eye on a Penn senator 9/0. Penn squall 30LD. A lovely Daiwa Millionaire 6HM and a Daiwa Sealine SL250H
The 6HM and XLT2 are in unused condition complete with accessories and will be going on display.

Picked up about $2K of DAM Quick parts from a long closed shop inventory.  So sorting and adding about 15,000 NOS parts (81 pounds) to the 400K DQ parts already organized by numbers.  This is the 10th purchase of DQ parts I have been able to make over the last 25 years from closed shops & factory authorized service centers.

Don't believe there is much more left out there — except a few sellers selling a few parts for exorbitant and ridiculous prices to unknowing folks.

This was thanks to a good member, Steve.

Best, Fred

A '74 M.G. 300C.
Wanted to see what was the deal with roller bearings. First I shimmed it and got it quieter/smoother.

Looks like they reamed out the main gear shaft bushing and the rotor bushing to get them log shaped bearings down in there. The metal bearings look solid, but the cage is probably nylon or something.

Shouldn't be a thing though, as the bearings only need to be down in there and separated from one-another, while the i.d. and o.d. surfaces hold them in place.

It is 2" wide between the inside cage rings, came with a 5 stack drag system, aluminum spool, and handle. About 25 - 35 were actually built, but as far as I know only 25 were actually sold. It was going to be built in either 4.6, or 5.5 gear ratios, but alas someone got bored and it never got off the ground.

The one on ebay was a "put together" reel out of parts removed from Valley Manufacturing.

Ain't picked up much new lately; been working on rehabbing a bunch of rods I've had waiting for activity. Currently working on a Berkley Cherrywood CRC15-5'6" that had a broken tip.  Break was at the first guide down from the tip, so should be able to sleeve it ala the Ralph O'Quinn method, then remount the guide on top of the sleeve so the repair will be hard to notice.

Completed a St. Croix 09SP-66ML a couple weeks ago.  Most everybody nowadays thinks of St. Croix as a medium to high end brand; back in the day, they must've contemplated a more mainstream clientele, 'cause this 09SP was pretty basic.  Stripped off all the old guides & tiptop & replaced with more, and, I hope, better ceramic insert models & rewrapped threads with color scheme similar to old green/orange setup. I'm taking the "ML' part of the model number as a hint that this rod was intended for medium-light action.

Low-end Shakespeare Mantis had a break @ 16 in. from the tip, which is a little more of a dicey repair, but I took a crack at it.  Took off all the remaining guides; the place of the break worked out to be under the spot where the new 3rd guide down from the tip got placed, so I again mounted the guide on top of the repair sleeve & you almost can't see the fix.  Rewrapped with red & gray threads.

Did a "mystery rod", noted as an "OceanCity" (all one word) "Laser LP2552UL" (I think).  Surely not a "real" Ocean City from away back when; I guess there are plenty of builders who don't care about using quality names from the past and the he** with copyrights, patents or anything else that might get in the way. No info to be found on the 'net about it. Two-piece 5.5 ft. long; the "UL" may refer to ultralight; not a particularly fast action, but I'd guess she was a little beefier than an ultralight.  Old-fashioned 2-foot guides with white ceramic inserts; tiptop insert had busted or fallen out.  Non-metal ferrule, so not totally ancient.  Stripped off all the guides & replaced with more and better (hopefully) models with chromed metal & gray ceramic inserts and a # 6 tiptop. Originally a black blank with black threads and the tiniest bit of gold trim, and new work mimicked that color scheme.

Had a Zebco Sundowner Model 1930 spinning rod circa early 1980s; kinda low budget model and well scraped & dinged on the surface, but sound otherwise.  Guides like the OceanCity mentioned above.  Stripped the blank bare and, new for me, tried a repaint.  Original color was a bronzey-tannish; I went with a London Gray, which is a light brown with grayish tinge & not too far off the original tint.  Added a couple of guides to the original number & remounted with blue wraps accented with a bit of bright red here and there; that color combo stands out on that gray-tan blank.  Medium action with lure weights 1/4 to 5/8, so should be OK for all-around use.

Got a few more to work on if I get motivated.  Abu-Garcia "IKE-Dude"(what a name) that might be next.

Frank

I am getting to the point where I am the anti-hoarder. If I haven't fished it in the last five years, it's going.

I need money to keep working on my old house anyway. I won a shotgun in a raffle so now I have to sell that too, lol.

Picked up a Penn 710 spinfisher green version, a Seeker classic series 196 8ft rod and a Dam West Berlin Quick Super reel. The rod is like new and I paid $25 at thrift store needed a tip replacement, the two reels came in a lot with some Newell aluminum spools and some older Penn spools from eBay from a seller in Hawaii for $45. Going to take the Quick Super reel out for some surf fishing once I get her all cleaned, lubed and spooled with fresh 25lb line. Rod will be fished for Yellows and Calicos with my Cortez conversion Narrowed Penn Squidder with fresh 20lb yozuri as a pairing at the Coronado islands here real soon.
