the fish's interface with the reel is the drag system. once you upgrade your drag washers to greased carbon fiber, the fish will probably not be able to tell the difference between your $90 ambassaduer and your $350 calcutta. your interface with the reel is the handle grip. in between the handle grip and the drags is a reel with single or two speeds, leverdrag or star drag, graphite or aluminum frame, level wind or no. once you're on a fish, your reel may as well be a black box. it's you on the handle grip and the fish against the drag.
personally, i've found most fishing reel handle grips to be to small. that's why i had pete kolekar make the bigger ones for me. the materials he chose were stainless steel and delron. the grip is turned on a lathe, starting with barstock. the stainless is tubing, screws and more barstock turned on a lathe. these handle grips have a very comfortable 9 degree offset. they are not fancy, but they are very tough and come in three sizes. first, there is a smaller tapered grip that i call a 2/0 kolekar. i personally put them on the loaner reels that i use for inshore rockcod fishing. alot of guys really like them on smaller reels. then there is a full sized handle grip that i call a 4/0 kolekar. i have these grips installed on my progear 501's and my accurate boss reels, from the itty bitty 197 to the 650. the last grip is the newer tapered magnum that i call a 6/0 kolekar. i put these on my accurate atd's. i like these grips on any size reel from a penn senator 113h to an 80 international. the trick is to match the grip with the size of your reel AND the size of your hand.
on many reels, the length of the handle arm is fine, it's just the grip that is too small. all you need to do is remove the handle, drill out the rivet holding the grip, bolt on a new grip and you're all set. alternatively, you can send me the old handle and i can mount it for you. the 2/0 is $26, the 4/0 is $30, and the 6/0 is $36, all with domestic shipping included. send a check to alan tani, 12362 ted court, saratoga, ca 95070 and i'll ship out the handle out. thanks! alan
QuoteWhat keeps the threaded screw from coming loose? They look like a nice upgrade. I may have to try a couple.
yeah, i was mulling that one over for quite a while. the guy that makes them for me wanted to use loctite on them, and may have actually done so on the early models.
my take is this - corrosion anywhere is bad. that means using grease on screw threads to prevent corrosion. that also means that they might back out. i personally assemble all of the handles now. i torque them down as hard as possibly can, AFTER adding yamaha blue greease to the screw holes. i need all of you to get back to me if there is a problem or screw up. if you don't, i will never know if there is a problem.

Hi Alan, Just out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of the 2/0, 4/0 as compared to the 6/0? Are all the same diameter, just shorter? Also, was thinking of replacing some older Penn International handles. Seems, these may be a press fit. I could drill these out, but my concern is that the hole diameter may be a bit larger than the bolt that came with the 6/0s I recently purchased from you. Or maybe I should be asking is.....are all the handle upgrades you sell the same or are they different as to what make/model of reel I want to upgrade. Thanks, Ron.
hi, ron! the 2/0 is 1-1/8th x 3-1/4th, the 4/0 is 1-1/8th x 3-3/4ths and the 6/0 is 1-1/4th x 4-1/4th. on some of the handle arms, the hole that is left is a little larger than the diameter of the 10-32 machine screw. i've found it not to be a problem. even though it is not a tight fit, it the handle stays in place if you tighten down on the screw enough. alan
the new kolekar spinning reel grip (right) has a 0.375 inch diameter spindle instead the 0.5 inch spindle found on the 2/0 (left), the 4/0 and the 6/0 kolekar grips. that way you can bolt this spinning reel grip onto a skinnier handle arm.
the older 2/0 kolekar grip (left) is 3.25 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter. the 4/0 kolekar grip (center) is 3.75 inches tall and 1.25 inches in diameter. the new spinner (right) is 3.5 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter.
ok, they are ready to go. they are the same price as the 2/0 kolekar grip, $26 with shipping included. thanks! alan
they may seem to large at first, but i've started using the 6/0 grips on all my long range reels. they worked great on this last trip on the intrepid.
Would any of the handle's work on a 9/0 or a 12/0 or are there some in the works for that?
:)
i'd put a 6/0 grip on those reels and use the same arm. it will work great!
How about a small greased set screw tightened on the screw thread? It would mean drilling and tapping the shaft but it works well on other applications.

OK ALAN, PUT THE BIG ONES ON, JIM
thanks!
Which handles do you recommend for a Newell F229 and S338? Or can I get Newell's P series handles from you?
i have a small stainless steel arm for these reels. most guys have been matching it up with a 2/0 kolekar grip. photos to follow.
Alan,
How do your smallest handles 2/0 size compare to the old style tiburon lite handles? I have those on most of my reels and really like them. The problem with the tiburon ones is they have redesigned them and I don't care for the new ones. I picked up another progear 545 last year and would like to change out the handle on it. Please let me know. Thanks, Mike
they are slightly larger in diameter and a little shorter in over all length. the kids like them alot!
Alan, would the handles fit a Penn 545GS and a Penn 525 Mag?
easily. you just drill out the old grip and bolt on the new one. ;D
Hi Alan,
Looking to upgrade my Penn narrow 505hs with your stainless gear sleeve and handle kit. My question, will I need to change the arm & handle and if so, do you have an arm that will accommodate the change? I will send you a check after receiving your reply.
Thanks,
Les Yee
thanks, les. the gear sleeve is easy. send a pm with your address and i'll send it out. when it arrives, send a check. the handle is another issue. i have the 2/0 kolekars that are great, but you have to do some drilling. i also have the penn jigmaster power handle. the price is currently $20. i bought a bunch at the old price of $15 and i'm still selling them at that price. alan
Alan: Question regarding the penn power handle in your inventory, does it look like the 24-12LT, 24N-310, or the 24-55.

Hey Alan... I really like the design of these handles. Do you have the tapered ones just a slight bit smaller than the 6/0? I am looking for two. One for my Tekota 800 and one for my Penn113h Jvariance conversion.
The handles that are slightly smaller in diameter are the spinner handles, but no taper. I use them on jigmaster sized reels and spinner larger than 4500s.
So you would recomend the 6/0? I am worried they may be just a little too big.
either the 4/0 or 6/0 would work fine. in part it depends on the size of the fish you are chasing.
Alan, how about adding something to these handles so that the delron grip in your hand can pivot. Say 30 degrees each way?
i tried one of those one time. i think reel colors makes it.
hated it. :-\
What size handle would you recommend for a TLD 15. I will be using it from my kayak for sharks. Thanks. Hank
a 4/0 grip is what i usually recommend. got a stainless steel handle arm to go with it.
I have 2 of those reel colors handles on my 114hlw's. I like the idea, but it doesn't feel comfortable at all in my wrist. Also, the cushioning on the handle is HUGE!... and I'm 6'5" with an XL glove. Tom must be making these things for basketball players with broken wrists ;D
PS- they ain't cheap either,
Dom
I really like those handle Alan; I will have to call you to get them put on both my BX 400 & BX2 500.
HI MR.TANI I HAVE ONE OLD PENN INTERNATIONAL 80 I WANT UPGRADE HANDLE WHAT OPTION IS BETTER
the 6/0 grip is the one that i would use.
I have 2 question a bit off topic but related:
1- is the handle arm on senators 0/4,0/6 & 0/9 of the same length and are they interchangeable?
2-For targetting big bottom fish like groupers(up to 60 lb) I was considering using a senator 0/6 with locked down drag due to the 2:1 gear ratio, if a longer handle arm is used, I belive this will provide more torque, is this worth trying? where can I find them?
3- How much lifting power can the above reel lift without using the rod, I rememeber someone in this forum doing teh same test fro an Okuma MAkaira 10, can teh senator beat the power of Makaira?
Thanks
Inspiro
the drag ranges of the makaira 10 and the penn senator 114 are probably very close, but the makaira will be much easier to crank in low gear. the difference between the makaira and the senator is probably the same as the difference between 60 pound spectra and 60 pound mono! a 60 pound grouper would have a better chance against mono because of the stretch. a 6/0 grip with a stock penn arm should be fine.
Hi Alan. Are the prices still the same on the handles, $26, $30, $36? I'm putting together an order for you and want to verify the prices first before I send a check.
BTW. Great to meet you at the Fred Hall show!
Alan, I have a Okuma EB-50 reel and need to replace the handle ball as it's too small to exert the kind of force I need to deal with the Bluefish here in the East Coast. Which size would I need and could you give me some idea of what the turn around time would be?
I live in PA.
the spinner handle grip would work better here because the spindle is a narrow diameter. send me a pm with your address and i willl mail it right out. when it arrives, send a check. alternatively, send me the handle and i can drill it out for you. may as well include a check at that time. drilling takes 2 minutes.
What size will I need for optimum performance for the Okuma EB50?
What handle would you recommend for Abu Alphamar 12? The 4/0 looks like it would match up best. I can send you the handle and how many USD?

Since the reel is fairly small, I'd recommed the 2/0 or spinner

I received Alans 4/0 handle upgrade and was able to try it out on a 3/4 day rockfish trip on the 3rd. It was for my SHimano TLD Star 20/40 and it makes all the difference in the world! Now I just need to learn what to use on the other end of the line to help me catch those big rock and Ling cod! Thanks Alan!
glad you like it. ;D
Received my upgraded handle today. Thanks Alan for the quality work and fast turn around. I can't wait to tangle with some 10# plus Blues with this new setup. I wonder why Okuma doesn't recognize this short coming with their EB series baitrunner. Would make their product that much better with a true SW larger knob on the handle.
you were the only one that got something back fast. it just worked out that way. everything else is 2 weeks to 2 months behind!!!! :-\
After reading many positive comments on your reel handles, I'd like to try one of them on my Penn Torque 200 star drag. I think your 4/0 (without taper) should be a good choice. If I mail in to you my current handle, with payment ($30?), will that suffice?
Thank you for your help,

Alan do you still have power handles for a jigmaster for sale. And whats the price. Thanks
got lots of stuff. send an e-mail to me next week and we can figure out which one is best for you. alantani@yahoo.com
Alan, I recieved the 6/0 Kolekar handle the other day for my Baja Special. The install went smooth and I'm itching to put it to the test against some yft next month off the Jersey coast. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!
i think you'll really like it. it may feel akward at first, but you will get used to it quickly.
Hi Alan,
How much for a handle AND a ss arm for a jigmaster 500s?
Ty
the 2/0 grip is $26, the 4/0 grip is $30, there is a $10 stainless steel arm that i do not like that is $10, and there is a complete penn jigmaster power handle for $15.
alan
sent you a PM about some handles and tld kits a few weeks ago and havnt received any parts, wondering if you got it?
stil plowing through pm's. coming up next!
Alan
I have 2 Daiwa SLX50SHA and 1 Grandwave Z 50 that I would like to to pt 4/0 grips on. I don't believe they will fit on the current handles. Do you have an option for a full handle replacement that will fit these or would the Spinning reel grips fit? I have one of the 6/0 grips that I put on a 900H that works great.
the spindle for the spinner has a smaller diameter. honestly, for these larger reels, i would still use the 4/0 grip. it will overhang a little, but i think you will hardly notice it. the spindle for the 4/0 is the same size as the 6/0 that you already have. either one will be an improvement, though. your choice!
In that case I need (3) 4/0 grips and (2) 6/0 grip. I also need another drag kit for a 900H. Can I PM you an address or would you prefer I send a check for the order?
you'll have to ping me again in 3 weeks for the 6/0 grips. i'm all out, again! >:( i have the 4/0 grips and the 900h drag kit. send an email with your shipping info for what ever you want now, then check with me again later for the 6/0 grips, or wait for the entire package all at once. :-\
To Alan, I'm truly glad to know such a skillful and talented man as you. Thank you for all you've been showing and doing. You are more than inspiring to me and many friends here in Egypt. I hope you heard about us. I'm trying now to upgrade my okuma handle as a start. Following all your foot steps. thank you once again.
thank you. egypt is another country that is on our list of places to someday visit. perhaps we will get a chance to meet.
Would very much like to purchase a grip for a penn international 80. I have the arm still but the old grip fell off due to corrosion so i would very much like to upgrade to one of yours.
Nick
nick, i finally got caught up on all the e-mails, now on to pm's.
Alan:
Does the 6/0 handle fit the stock hole in the arm of the Penn 70vs?
Jeff
sorry, it does not. even if it did, you still need screw holes for the shifter.
What drill bit should i use to install my 6/0 kolekar handle? The screw keeps backing out as i reel the line in. The lip on the handle is exposed so im thinking i need to make the hole larger so the lip before the screw area fits into the hole in the reel crank handle.
3/16ths inch for the small ones and 5/16ths inch for counterbored spindles.
Thank you!
New to Penn Senators, I have a 6/0 & 9/0 would these upgrades be better than what came on them?
TIA
Most definitely.

Alan,
Do you have SS arms for a 114H? :)
Are you waiting on Lee for these?
No we are not. This is the next item on the wish list for Alan.
Hello Alan, is there a Shimano Talica II arm and handle upgrade in your shop? They're very good reels but the handle arm is quite short. Thanks
Guys and gals, HELP ME!
Atempting to drill out old grips and replace with Kolekar grips. Man, I'm having a heck of a time doing this. My Harbor Freight drill bits do very little against some of this steel (my good bits are somewhere in storage w/the rest of my shop tools). My Dremel tool is doing most of the "heavy lifting/grinding". Currently Im trying to drill out the grip handle on my Avet SX and Im getting no-where-fast. im using a hand drill (drill press in storage) which was doing the job until I ran into this Avet. I believe the problem lies with these HF drill bits, so off to the hardware store to get a good bit, what type of bit should I get to drill out these grips from the handles?
Desperate,
Leo
Hi Leo,
I use the narrow step bit. Seems to work well. I also spray lubricant, like WD-40 while drilling
Bryan
Thanx Bryan,
I have both and will try both.
Leo
Bryan,
Update: your suggestions worked like a charm. Will use the steped drill bits from now on, the cut on the bits seem to remove material more effeciently than my regular bits. Now my issue is the length of the screw for the Kolekar grips seems a bit too short only a couple of threads to screw into the handle due to the extra material Avet has on the grip end of the handle. So I'll have to find a longer screw or grind the extra material flat with the rest of the handle so I have more threads to screw into the grip. Also of thinking of shiming the hole to support/stabalize the screw with some type of small diameter tubing from the hardware store. Im thinknig copper tubing will be more available but dont know if it will hold up to sleeve the grip screw, any suggestions guys? Does Alan have longer screws for these instances where one is needed? Lastly, Alan has greased the screw hole and Im thinking of applying semi-permanent thread locker such as blue Locktite to secure the screw to the handle. To add thread locker I'll need to remove the grease and Im concerned about corrosion if I do that, any suggestions to my questions?
Thanx again,
Leo
Glad it worked out Leo,
Alan does have some longer screws. Unfortunately, Alan has new inventor of the handles, gear sleeves, and tiburon frames and I cannot find anything at the moment. It may be possible for you to find another SS screw from Ace Hardware. They seem to have a bunch of SS screws that other places doesn't have.
Regarding the loctite. I just added a drop on my screws. Loctite chemically reacts with the metal, so when metal to metal contact occurs due to the stretching of the screw, the loctite bonds even with grease.
Bryan
Is it necessary to use a drill to remove the original rubber knob on an Accurate DPX2 real?
no, just remove the left handed bolt.
Do you still have the 6/0 handles currently in stock?? I need 2 of those.
i have the 5/0 grips. they start out as the same bar stock as the 6/0's, but the finish is fancier. same price.

Mr. Tani, I'm interested in those Kolekar grips. Are they still available? Thank you sir
Got a bunch. Send me a pm and we'll talk.
This thread seems a bit stale so I hope I am not posting in the wrong place. If so, let me know.
I have a kolekar handle that seized up on me on a trip yesterday. I had been enjoying it on a baja special for several years without incident and rinsing and lubing it after each trip along with the reel, but perhaps I should have been doing more.
It was not squeaking or giving any other indication of a problem, so I am not sure what happened, but even after removing the screw at each end it will not come loose, so I am unsure how to get it apart. Any hints?
yeah, it's 304 stainless against 308 stainless, so that will happen over time. i lube them when i put them together, but it (obviously) will not last forever. on the grip side you will see an hex head machine screw. it a right handed screw, so it comes out counterclockwise. i use a different machine screw now. the socket is larger so you can really crank down on them. send a pm with your address and i can mail you the new screws. worst case, send me the handle grip and i can crack it apart, clean it up and relube it for you.
Customer service at its finest! ;)
Just for closure - I managed to get it apart and it looks like something got into the mechanism. You can see two places where it dug into the shaft and where it scraped up as I separated them. There was still lubricant on it, albeit a bit gray.
I am not sure how that can happen with the washer and screw on the knob side and the tight tolerances on the other end. I am going to buff/polish and put it back together, with a generous amount of marine grease.
I took apart my other three, which all came apart easily, looked fine, and were still lubed, but I cleaned and regreased them anyway. I will add it to my yearly maintenance.
never seen that one before!!!!! :o
Maybe a little defect with the material.
I have a few of your knobs and as I mentioned earlier those are the best shafts I've seen in a while.
Having one as such out of the many you've offered, I call that good.
With that said, I think Wolvie deserves a new shaft 🙂
happy to replace it. anything is fine! just let me know!!!!!
I never had a doubt :)
Looking at it again, I think it should still do just fine as is.
Those are nice shafts Alan.

i had to look and was shocked. the 24-56 penn jigmaster power handle is now $30. when it was $20, it was a better value. maybe not so much now.
Too late Boss,
Mine will be here tomorrow. But I don't mine the cost if that's the recommended best for my needs.
A large thank you for recommendation. I'll send a pic when I'm done with my 309
Mic
I ordered the 6/0s last Friday and received them in the mail this morning. Wow...outstanding customer service. Thank you Alan. Just amazing.
glad you like them. any questions or problems, just let me know!!!
Hello! I need 2 of the big 6/0 size handles, for a Daiwa SLD 30II and a Penn 30SW. Sending $72 to the address listed.
Thank you Alan!
You still selling the Delrin handles Alan? Interested in a couple 2/0's if you have them. Looking for a stainless 505 gear sleeve too (Mystic Parts?). Thanks, Jeremy.
i'm down to two sizes, the 5/0 and the 3/0. for gear sleeves, i have only a few of the 113h's and the 114h's. once those are gone, i'll be out of the gear sleeve business. check with cortez conversions for gear sleeves. send me a pm for the other stuff. thanks! alan
farmer56 here , by any chance do you still have any 3/0 handles yet.... i would like three for my 112h and smaller reels,,, 1/0, 2/0 surfmaster 250 , etc.... hope this finds you and your family well.... ........ Dennis ,,,, the newly retired SW MN. Farmer after 44 years....
got a bunch. let me know if you want just the grip or the complete assembly with the stainless steel 3-position handle arm. please send a pm with your full mailing address and let me know what i can tempt you with. thanks! alan
will do thanks
Question what is the handle knob size on the 3/0 handles... thanks dennis is the 3/0 between the 2/0 and 4/0 in size ????
it's basically a tapered 4/0 grip. the maximum diameter in the middle is 1 and 1/8th inches, the overall length is 3 and 3/8ths inches.
wow thats what i want.... i will PM you with order thanks again ex-farmer56 dennis
Dennis, I have at least ten of these grips on various jigmasters, International 12's, and my full pimped Cortez 3/0's. They are the deal. With Alan's SS blade, basically impervious to elements and indestructable.
thor thanks for the vote... my main concern was balance of outfit with too large of handle....dennis
Thats why i first started looking for the 2/0 size...My GOOD friend randy over at vintage is still keeping an eye out for one of Alan's 2/0 handles on the first reel that comes in...so for now i will get three of the 3/0 new ones from the BOSS
Alan,
I just got the handle upgrade in the mail today. It is perfect for my 114h.
I love the handle arm, it is fit for a tank.
Nick
nice!!!!! ;D
I am looking for a direct fit long arm handle replacement for a Talica 20.
I mostly use this reel for long range wahoo fishing in the stock configuration, BUT I would love to get a longer arm with knob that will quickly interchange as needed to turn the reel into a backup big tuna reel. One reel, two different length handles, and two uses.
Previously I have caught large YFT in the stock configuration, and afterwards had Cal modify it with lower gears- but I did not like it.
I want to keep my reel stock with a second easily changed out longer handle. Is there one available?
Thanks!
sorry, i don't have one and i am not aware of any that are carried by shimano. ebay is likely your best bet. :-\
I was just wondering Alan...do you plan to make more 2/0 size?
farmer56 here... yes alan if you do mark me down for three for sure maybe four ..... hope this finds you and your family well..... farmer out .... i would even do a pre-pay order if that helps....
I would be in for a couple.
Sorry, gentlemen, but no. The 3/0 grip is midway in size between the 2/0 and the 4/0. The inventory carrying costs were a bit much.
Alan if you get a reel in and someone wants to upgrade to a 3/0 i will buy the new handle for them and trade..... dennis .... thanks
What handle would you suggest for a Accurate BV2 800?
the large 5/0 grip!!!
Alan, I'm new to the Tuna game up here in the NE. I plan on buying a TLD30IIA and I've read the handles aren't comfortable at all. What would you recommend as a replacement?
I put Alan's 5/0 on all my Internationals 20-50's. It's the way to go.
John
i have a stainless steel arm and a 5/0 grip that work great. send me a pm, or email me at alantani@yahoo.com if i can tempt you with one.!!!
