Here's a picture

Yes, that is the greased drag, lol.

Might explain why  it feels essentially dry still.

PS: I figured the lack of free spool out, the grease I smeared on the left, non drag side of the reel apparently was enough to cause some 'binding' not actual binding but enough to stop the reel from actually spinning freely. Not sure it would actually impact casting much but not willing to risk it so whiped it off. I see why our favorite free-spin fanatic, the one and only Alan Tani just uses Corrosion X spray, instead of grease, since a little excess grease seems to wreak havoc on freespinning.

Zangi / Pelican 100 vs 0rvis 100. Big ...
Last post by Fishgolfman - April 19, 2026, 08:47:07 PM
I was and others that Pelican 100 was simply a rebadged Orvis 100 or vice versa. Had to get a bunch of Zangi parts out and thought why not rebuild the Pelican 100 as body broken at stem and seat chipped.
Well side plates exchange easily as well as spools. Differences are in internals. Pelican body accommodates a longer shaft that goes into body. The pelican shaft is also thinner overall and shafts cannot exchange for each other. I have extra Orvis bodies but makes me think whether I should try exchanging given differences and the worm drive in the body has a differnt diameter

Beginner's Board / Re: Springer knot...heavy line...
Last post by Jim O - April 19, 2026, 07:23:23 PM
I just  did a quick test on 15-lb Izor XXX. (I will repeat with 20 and 30-lb line tomorrow ). Anyway, I used a 15-lb barbell weight with a zip tie looped through the middle. I took about 2.5' of the line and tied a single hook to one end with the SD knot. To the other end I tied another hook with the 3-wrap Springer knot.

The first test, I hooked the SD hook around the zip tie, and the 3-wrap Springer around the handle of a wire cutter. I lifted the wire cutter straight up. The weight cleared the ground for about 6-seconds before I set it back down. Neither knot slipped, nor did the line break. (I believe Izorline tests higher than it's rating).

I then switched the piece of line around so the 3-wrap Springer hook was around the zip tie, the SD hook around the wire cutter handle. Same result. I even held the weight off the ground a little longer and gave it a swing.

If there's a flaw in my quick test here, tell me, because I'm going to repeat it with 20 and 30-lb line.

Great info in this thread. Maybe it should be stickied. Does the 2/3rd of drag setting apply to spinning reels when loading with braid?
