Title: Penn Mag Power 970
Post by: satbchbum on September 14, 2011, 09:07:26 PM
Hello everyone,

First off, this is a great site! My question is concerning the Penn Mag Power 970. Since this reel is discontinued, I am wondering  - are there any compatible parts from other Penn reels that can be used on this reel? Also, are there any compatible aftermarket reel frames that would fit the screw pattern on this reel?

Thanks ahead of time for any responses....

G'day and welcome,
Scott's still has a wide selection of Mag Power 970 parts available, which may suit your purposes: https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Penn970.aspx (https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Penn970.aspx)
Can't help with aftermarket frames, unfortunately.
Cheers, Justin

what parts are you looking for?

I was wondering if the reel can take a stainless sleeve upgrade and if there are any replacement aluminum frames or sideplates that have matching screw patterns. I think it would a great reel to customize if possible.....

it will, but it's probably not worth the cost.......   :-\

Thanks a bunch. It's probably not worth it, but as all of us who have this reel affinity know, it's not always about the money....  :)

Does anyone know of a source for Mag Power 980 parts? I need a left side plate and inner gold metal rings, none of which are available at Scott's...   :P

BTW, I received my 9/0 frame today, and it is out of this world!   :)

Okay, I clearly shouldn't be obsessing over this, but... although Scott's doesn't have any left-side plates for the 980, they do have one for the 990, so I'm wondering if the two are interchangeable? I strongly suspect that they are; in all the photos I can find, the two reels appear almost identical. The 990 had a faster retrieve ratio, but that would more likely affect the handle-side plate, right?

I may just go ahead and order the 990 plate, anyway. If it doesn't work, I can always offer it for sale.   :)

Looking at the 970, 980, and 990 reels is appears that the 970 and 980 side plates are the same.  The 990 is larger than the 970/980.

Here's what Scott's has on all three reels:  https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/ReelSpecs/PennMagPower.aspx (https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/ReelSpecs/PennMagPower.aspx)

The 980 and 990 look almost identical, while the 970 is narrower... At any rate, I wrote to them and asked my question.   :)

The 970 is narrower than the 980 but appears to use the same side plate and rings.  The 990 is the same width as the 980 but taller and has different side plates and rings.

970 and 980 are same except reel seat and spacer bars. I bought my first 980 a few years back, and then converted it to a 970. I also bought a 970 last year. they are great reels. Parts show up on ebay all the time, I have seen side plates. and the rings from time to time. They do not share any parts with the 990, except for maybe the gear sleeve, but that may also be different. The 970 and 980 use the same gear sleeve, drags and handles as the 113H. I have a brand new RH side plate, but it is bare, only the phenolic.
let me know if you are interested in buying it, I will be posting in the for sale section soon, a nice collection of old school, upgraded penn reels, Alan and I go way back on this customization thing, before he had a website and became world renowned!

Thank you, Intili, I appreciate the info. I've written to several of Scott's "Other Sources for Parts", not with much hope but one never knows. Also locked in specific searches on eBay, which is always a possibility. Sooner or later I'll find one... <fingers crossed>  :)

As John said the 990 does not fit your reel.
I checked with my UK Penn rep who may be able to locate* a LH Side Plate for the 970/980.
There are no Side Rings available and given the original price he quoted me that eBay one looks a bargain.
Apparently the Side Plates de-laminated but could be repaired using a suitable adhesive.

*Might take a week or two as Pure Fishing have acquired Hardys of Alnwick and are moving their headquarters and stores to Alnwick in the North of England. FWIW.

Ailala:

Depending on what your original intentions were for your 980, if you are restoring it as a display piece, well, here's one option, abeit not a cheap one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Penn-980-Mag-Power-Conventional-Fishing-Reel-FRC-5-/161221551185?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25898da451

At that price, might ask for more photos to confirm that the reel is as pristine as the seller implies.

Hi, Porthos. (Great name, BTW; I'm a Dumas fan, too!)

Yes, I already checked out this offering. It's nice, but since I'm looking to restore my 980 so I can use it, not for me. Although I must say, finding the right sideplate is proving to be a bitc... um, very challenging. I appreciate the heads-up, though... thanks!   :)

x2, nice job Larry.

Aiala, I'm glad you finally got your plate. I've noticed on these reels that the writing on the cross bars usually wears off, It would be ok if it would come completely off, but on most only a portion does.
It shouldn't bother you, but if you're like me, this is what I do:
Here is the bar with the letters half off
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx305/pescatore3/008_zpsc1b02dea.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/pescatore3/media/008_zpsc1b02dea.jpg.html)
and here is a shot with it completely off, that cross bar looks new again.
(http://i766.photobucket.com/albums/xx305/pescatore3/010_zpsf35a314d.jpg) (http://s766.photobucket.com/user/pescatore3/media/010_zpsf35a314d.jpg.html)
I put a little dab of Citristrip on a rag and gently rub, it comes right off.

Hi, I am looking for a left side plate for the Mag Power 970.   (This is an old thread, maybe I should have started a new one?) Anyone have one to sell (27-970)?  Does the 980 left side plate (27-980) fit the 970?

Hi, Decker. As it happens, I do have a left-side 970 plate. (Finding them is a real pain... been there, done that.) The magnet is missing, but I think I know where it is... let me search a bit, and I'll get back to you.   :)

PM sent, Aiala!   Thanks.  Let me know what we can work out.

I tried to remove the cracked left plate from my 970 yesterday, by removing the four screws.  From the parts diagram, it looks like that should do it.  It didn't budge initially, and I was afraid to force it and extend the cracking.  Any advice on loosening the plate without prying it?   Do I need to do any more dis-assembly?  Thanks.

You could try to remove the handle side 1st and push the tail plate out from the inside - all mine were tight too & ended up using a fine file on the outside of the plate where it touch's the frame and make it easier to remove.

Matt, thanks for the tip.  I am finding online that there are many potential problems with (and solutions for) to the Power Mag side plates. I never saw so much cracking with Penn Bakelite side plates.

Sal, thanks for the welcome, and the links.  I drool over the enhanced Penns, but don't have the budget for the Newell, Accurate, Tiburon stuff.  Still, I'l keep my eyes peeled at the yard sales :)

The plates on those should actually be stronger than most:

I'm thinking this little guy has way too much power for its own good.
A second dog might help keep the gear sleeve square to the bridge plate when under stress.

Good Day Gurus,
I made one mistake. I decided to change original left side magnet to a new designed knob magnets. and unfortunately it doesnot work well on 980 Penn Mag Power. So i removed old magnet and epoxyd new knobby magnet set.

Im asking every one who might have original left side plate for sale. Im want change everything as it was before.

Thanks in advance.

Those are very hard to find, Riy.  The one you have looks great.  Can you make it work somehow?  I think Chad might have adapted a knobbed magnet to one of his Power Mag reels.  Good luck!
